  5. Boy, I hadn't thought of that. Maybe this move was made to free up space in Rochester - to get Escobar to SS. So how has Nishi been doing for the last couple months. Anyone know?
  6. I don't have a problem with this move. It's not like anyone else is banging down the door. I might rather see Florimon, but it's six of one, half dozen of the other. I'm not sure this means that Nishi is ranked higher in the Twins mind. If he's coming to sit on the bench it might mean they would rather have Escobar and Florimon playing every day.
  7. Heeeee's Baaaa-aaack. Can someone who has been paying more attention than I to Rochester tell me about this "hot streak" he's been on for the last month? I have to assume he's coming up as a utility infielder, right? Carroll goes to 3B full time and Casilla to 2B?
  8. The Minnesota Twins have traded third baseman Danny Valencia to the Boston Red Sox for minor league outfielder Jeremias Pineda. Valencia, who started the year as the Twins everyday third baseman, has spent most of the year in Rochester but was recalled two weeks ago when Trevor Plouffe was injured. He was hitting .198 with a 522 OPS and also struggled in AAA, hitting .250 with a 688 OPS. Replacing Valencia on the 25-man roster will be Tsuyoshi Nishioka. [PRBREAK][/PRBREAK] The player the Twins acquired, Jermias Pineda, is atypical in several ways. He is dominating the Gulf Coast League (GCL), which is a rookie league (below A ball) with a .421 batting average and a 981 OPS. He doesn't have any home runs, and is listed as 5' 11" and 175 pounds, so he profiles as more of a speedster than a slugger. He sticks out in the GCL for another reason too: he is 21 years old, which is very old for that league, so one would expect him to shine against 18 and 19-year-olds. He is playing in the GCL because he signed in March of 2011 as a 20-year-old, playing the Dominican Summer League for most of last year. So the Twins traded for a late-blooming speedster who is doing what he should be doing in rookie ball - dominating younger players. At this point, it's hard to determine the path he will take, or even what grade of prospect he seems to be. But this is reminiscent of previous trades Terry Ryan had made in which he grabbed Jason Bartlett and Alexi Casilla while they were still low minor leaguers and not highly ranked prospects. Nishioka's overall play in Rochester - hitting .245 with a .309 on-base percentage - still has not been impressive for the free agent the Twins signed to a 3-year deal before last year. However, for the last month, those numbers have been trending up and there was some speculation that he might be ready to rejoin the Twins soon. My best guess is he will play utility infielder for the Twins until Plouffe returns. For more on Pineda, stop by the Tenth Inning Stretch for a mini-scouting report. You can also join the Twins Daily thread on the trade. Or talk about the return of Nishi with the community.
  9. How about Duluth?
  10. I'm really enjoying these updates. I'm looking forward to hearing about Elizabethton.
  11. I'll give an iPad tip. If you plan on using it o post on the forum or blog, there are some great protective cases that double as keyboards. Having a keyboard has changed how I use the ipad. Also, don't worry about being ripped a new one. We're definitely moving towards more civility. Finally, welcome. We're happy to have you here whether you blog, post, comment or just read.
  12. So your point is the Twins need to add high-performing or solid vets at SS, 3B & several starting pitchers? I think that means they either need to spend a lot this offseason or trade away prospects for more solid, albeit expensive guys? Is that what you're saying? I guess if that's the bigger view, then I can see why you would be dissatisfied with Dozier. I'll add one thing: the Twins have a bigger view too, and it involves developing minor leaguers. Even if they had another $50M payroll, I think plugging in players like Dozier would be a priority or them. They feel strongly that is part of their mission.
  13. I think there is a lot of value in having serviceable players at minimum wage rates. The 2002 through 2004 Twins were made almost entirely of such players. Is your point that Dozier will never be more than average? Because the makes him a pretty good addition for the next five years. Maybe I'm missing the point....
  14. I know you're really, really, REALLY anti-Ryan, and I dont want to derail this thread, but I don't even know what this means. Henchman? Like for a Batman villain? That sounds kind of crazy.
  15. I wonder if there isn't one big thing that Dozier has going for him - Gardy lobbied for him. It seems pretty clear that Dozier was rushed through AAA because Gardy had lobbied for him last year, had his opinion solidified in a big spring training and the Twins had (kind of) an opening. Gardy was a shortstop and I thin most would agree he's been a little goofy about them. He's their biggest critic and their biggest supporter. I don't know exactly what Gardy's support means, but I think it means that Dozier does enough stuff that Gardy likes that Gardy feels OK trotting him out there to see if Dozier develops. That is a good thing, IMHO. Like someone said above, his minor league batting eye gives me a lot of hope that he's going to get better, especially because he almost skipped AAA completely.

  17. Let's see if Twins Daily can do some good.... Next Sunday, the 12th, Twins pitcher Glen Perkins and his wife Alisha are organizing a 5K in downtown Minneapolis to raise money for the fight against cyctis fibrosis (CF). The whole Bonnes family is joining in, so if you would like to run with us at our glacial (or at your own) pace, sign up at their site and then let me know in the comments below and we'll work out a meeting place. For those who can't make it, please consider sponsoring my run. This is the first time the Twins Daily community has tried something like this, but I suspect that with so many members contributing daily to the site, they'll also contribute to such a good cause. My goal is just $150, and I'd rather have 150 members contribute $1 than five contribute $30 so know that whatever you can throw in is appreciated. Please Sponsor John's Cystic Fibrosis Run Here is some more information... [PRBREAK][/PRBREAK] The Race The race starts at 8 AM at the Metrodome, winds around downtown and ends at Target Field, and "along the course you will learn about Glen's journey from playing college games at the Metrodome for the U of MN to MLB games at Target field. You will climb the ladder up from rookie ball to the big leagues just like this Minnesotan did." You can pick up your race packet that morning starting at 7AM or on Friday or Saturday in St. Paul. The Swag You also get a medal at the end if you finish. You also get a t-shirt and tickets to Sunday's game vs the Rays, too. Finally, if you dress up like a Twins player (wear a jersey?) there will be items signed by Minnesota Twins players given away randomly at the finish line. The Disease Cystic fibrosis is a devastating genetic disease that affects the lungs and digestive system. More than ten million Americans are symptomless carriers of the defective CF gene. It is passed down through families and causes thick, sticky mucus to build up in the lungs, digestive tract, and other areas of the body. It is one of the most common chronic lung diseases in children and young adults. It is a life-threatening disorder. So let's see what we can do. If you can spare a couple of clicks and a few dollars, please sponsor my run next Sunday. If you can make it yourself, even better. Thank you in advance for all your generosity and involvement. I continue to believe that Twins Daily is a community that can do outstanding things.
  18. His stats in BLT's AAA team were silly good too : 49k/7bb, 44ip
  19. If I remember right, the Twins are committed (contractually?) to paying $1.5M per year into a fund that is used for maintenance and improvements, but they've been sinking additional money into things too. I'm very happy about this. They seem to really value their home and I'd like it to last a long, long time; not just the 30 year (or however long) lease they have.
  20. Money helps. In both cases, they took on players that may be overpaid, reducing what they needed to give up. It's not a small factor.
  21. I can't believe I haven't been there since they became the Twins affiliate. And I'm almost sure I won't this year, which is just stupid.
  22. I would agree if it was just the money, but could WCCO cover the Twins the way KSTP does? I don't think so. WCCO was never going to be an all sports station and it's nowhere near the talk station giant it used to be. I'm not sure why - they certainly have the signal strength. But they seem a little lost. I'm not sure a talk station can be super-successful any more if it doesn't focus on either sports or politics (and it has to be either a left or right side of politics). So long as they don't embrace one of these, I'm not sure they can still succeed as the "community focused talk station" that they used to be. I don't think it's a coincidence that the Gophers - both football and hockey/basketball - dropped them too.
  23. I have no idea what to do with this guy, other than keep trotting him out there and see what happens. I can't think of a comparative guy historically. My gut tells me this can't last, but I don't see any reason why the Twins shouldn't keep running him out there until it doesn't work.
  24. Also, about "do they know where their signal is strong or weak" I think the answer is yes, they hear about that. But it's complicated to fix. I get the sense that some radios work in a certain area and some don't, or that the signal can be affected by electrical interference on some roads but not on others. In general, I think the FM signal is stronger these days, which is one reason that KFAN switched. (The other reason is that a lot of people have FM only radios now.)
  25. Well, I'll stick up for my boys and PA too, and not just because I know them. I've been a fan of P.A. & Dubay since literally their first week of replacing Jesse and I still like that show. I love that he loves sports and is unapologetic for it. I love that he loves the home teams (me too) and is unapologetic for it. And I don't have a problem with him being subjective provided he doesn't pretend to be objective, and he absolutely doesn't. And he knows a lot of sports several levels deeper than most. He's the closest thing to a sports geek in this market. As for the Powertrip, I haven't always been an avid listener - for instance back when there was the whole Stomp The Star thing. They also don't pretend that they LOVE sports, or that's all they want to talk about (except maybe football. Lord, do all three of them love football.) So if I only wanted sports talk, they're probably not my choice. But they're entertaining way beyond sports and I can honestly say that the reason I go in there twice per week is because I can count on at least one good belly laugh, sometimes of the gross variety, and that's not something we middle-aged dads get to do very often. FWIW, they're the second rated morning show in the Twin Cities and within a couple of percentage points of KQ, last I heard.
