  1. I can understand, in general, the criticism that Mauer is too patient. But I can't in that at-bat. There just wasn't much there. It was if they were pitching around him.
  2. How do you figure? If Span was put on the DL right away, we have already seen Parmelee for a week.. Furthermore, I'd suggest that Span is much less likely to return at less than 100% and hurt the team by not being on the DL, because he's rushing to return. I said in last week's podcast that this predilection of the Twins doesn't kill them in a noncompetitive year when they have little depth. But that's because nothing kills them in noncompetitive year. That doesn't mean everything except the pitching staff should be ignored.
  3. and doesn't looks likely to play today... http://www.twincities.com/twins/ci_21345983/minnesota-twins-denard-span-misses-fifth-straight-game So at the end of today, Span will have been unavailable for a week and still not on the DL. Is he close to returning? Well. That tells us exactly nothing. Here's the thing: if they don't know when he's going to return, then it likely means it's not close and he should be on the DL. And if they know, then tell us. "Doing some thing?" "Moving in the right direction?" "Feeling better?" Really? And here's the other thing: I have delayed starting this thread for a couple days because I know it isn't likely to generate a lot of intelligent discussion, just a lot of cheap shots. But I'm doing so for 2 reasons. First, because it's news dammit. And second, because the reason it is going to be a bunch of cheap shots is because we've been down this road umpteen times. There isn't a lot of intelligent discussion that hasn't already been said. And yet things stay the same. When you keep doing the same stupid thing over and over and over again, eventually, all that's left is to dream up different ways to illustrate how stupid it is. Which brings us to the cheap shots....
  4. http://www.startribune.com/sports/twins/blogs/166676076.html Christensen looks at Mauer's 9th inning at-bat last night, the one in which he walked to load the bases, and wonders why he never got the bat off his shoulder in six pitches. I gotta disagree with Joe on this one. I watched that at-bat and I was watching to see if Mauer had anything he could really hit. I concluded that he didn't have anything he could really work with, though one pitch wasn't terrible.
  5. http://www.startribune.com/sports/twins/166652456.html Joe takes a look at five pitchers we've been talking about a lot on this board: Berrios, Gibson, Hendriks, Fernandez & Vasquez. His description of Fernandez is underwhelming. I'm not sure why he included him with these others.
  6. http://www.startribune.com/sports/twins/166663226.html I can't imagine he would be an asset in the bullpen, and AAA is almost over. What options are there?
  7. Re: TV Deal The Twins recently extended it, so it isn't the timing that's the problem. It's that SD (I think) now had two regional sports networks. Cox was the old one and Fox Sports San Diego is the new one. FSSD is also partly owned by the Padres. Remember when everyone was cranky about Victory Sports? That was being done to avoid this situation. However, all of that should be taken into account of the Forbes values.
  8. MLB just approved a sale of the San Diego Padres for $800M. The Padres were valued by Forbes this year at $458M, good for 20th in MLB. #14 was your Minnesota Twins at a valuation of $510M. (Here are all the valuations by Forbes.) Are the Twins really worth close to $900M? Just a couple of data points to keep in mind... 1. Pohlad bought the team in 1984 for $40M 2. In 2001, during the whole contraction mess, he was reportedly going to sell them for $150M.
  9. Hey, I have a reason for you to join SABR. Remember that SABR convention that was here two months ago? A 100+ page magazine, researched by the local SABR chapter (including myself and Aaron Gleeman) about all things MN baseball, was created for that and is now available online. You can read the whole thing here: http://sabr.org/research/2012-national-pastime It includes 26 stories. But it's only for registered SABR members. To register costs $40-$65, but it provides all kinds of other benefits, too. Anyways, just a heads up.
  10. Welcome aboard. The conflict you're wrestling with is something we all wrestle with, no matter how objective we claim to be. (To not admit it is either self-deceiving or dishonest, IMHO.) I look forward to reading more.
  11. He did just turn 26 last month. There is still hope for him. Too bad it was a lost season.
  12. You really DO want to see Mandelaro's head explode, don't you, John? I'd like to see those guys get a call up sooner rather than later, too. At the same time, maybe there's some value in letting them have the experience of a playoff push, even if it's at the AAA level. The Wings are still 3.5 games out of the wild card, so they're probably going to fall short and those players will be available to come up when the regular season ends 9/3 (or sooner if the Wings are mathematically eliminated a couple days earlier). It also looks like they have a couple of big two game series over the next couple days against the 1st and 2nd place teams. I wouldn't be shocked if early next week some decisions are made.
  13. So can we call up Hendriks, Parmelee and Vasquez now? Please?
  14. http://www.startribune.com/sports/twins/blogs/166398986.html Sinker lays out some of the reasons for the Twins recent moves and talks about some of the experiments he woudl like to see. But my favorite is the nickname he comes up with for the Twins rotation: The Filler Ds. So, what are everyone's top experiments they want to see they Twins try over these last 6 weeks?
  15. It has been a remarkable year for rookies. Some years Diamond's performance would have won it. This year, you're right - he might be completely overlooked.
  16. It sounds from the story that the Red Sox got in while the getting was good and there ain't much left for the Twins, or at least that's how opponents are framing it. I'm a little surprised the Twins weren't working with the commission at the same time to make sure they were included in the last go-round.
  17. If we really want to debate this thing, I think you can make a pretty strong argument that Parmelee should be playing right field while Span is out and Mastroanni should be either back on the bench or at second base. I'd argue the latter, but I'd be OK with the former, too. I think we have a decent idea of what Mastroianni can be as a hitter (though he's overperforming now) and we know how he is as a corner OF defender. Why not get answers on Parmelee (both offensively and defensively) and maybe Maestro at second?
  18. I gotta say, it seems like a no-brainer to me to promote him and sit Duensing or Blackburn. I could say the same with Hendriks. I think De Vries deserves a bit more rope and Deduno has earned the right to keep doing it his way until it doesn't work. Ryan has talked a lot about accountability this season and has demonstrated it often. This seems like another opportunity to prove he means it.
  19. FWIW, within the last couple weeks I heard Gardy talk about Parmelee in the outfield and he didn't pull the usual managerspeak one uses when one doesn't want to crap on his own player. He stated straight out that he thinks he can play there and wants to give him that chance.
  20. And I'd point to Nick's GM Blueprint in the GM Handbook. In it, his pitching moves were to offer arbitration to Kevin Slowey and pick up Rich Harden in a make good contract. And I'm not picking on Nick. I'm just trying to illustrate that while the rotation wasn't free of concerns, there there were higher priorities this offseason. And that was appropriate.
  21. I dont' know if that's true, though I suspect we'll find out soon enough. If they thought Span or Revere weren't going to return, I think we would see Parmelee out there.
  22. Yes. Sorry. Fixed it in the story, but not here. Fixed now.
  23. I think this is the right move for now. If Span gets moved to the DL (which I cynically view as inevitable, even knowing nothing of the situation) then we'll see Parmelee.
  24. Yep, it came out in February, but that makes it valuable in a different way: it reflects the perception at the time. And the perception was... 1. The Twins biggest problem is the health of their stars and 2. The fairly solid rotation is something they can leverage to get better in the future. I'll say it again: this rotation meltdown was a surprise. We were not talking about it this offseason. I doubt we can find any threads started here in February where we sound worried about it. We shouldn't act like it was a foregone conclusion.
  25. Link isn't working Sorry about that. Got my permissions on the story messed up. Should be fixed now.
