  1. We haven't talked too much about the impact these new guys could have this year. There's a lot of talk about Steinbach tutoring the catchers. STeinbach tells a story about him and LaRussa and then he and Gardy have the following exchange.... Twins counting on new coaches to help turnaround as ex-players Steinbach, Brunansky join staff | StarTribune.com
  2. Huh. That's too bad. I liked the broadcasts where he teamed up with Gladden. They had a certain hyper chemistry about them.
  3. Agree. I love the Twins one. I would buy it if it existed.
  4. OK, this is cool. M Willis is applying the soccer jersey design look to each MLB team's jersey. He published the AL Central today. Below is the link, and the Twins jersey (and narrative) is quite a ways down. I gotta say - I like it very much, especially the colors (white and light gray) and some of the fine touches, like the stars over the TC representing championships. And he seems to get us.... 5. To countdown the days til pitchers and catchers report, we're going to list the Twins with those numbers (thanks to this awesome list) and let you can reminisce about one of them. So who is the poster boy for day #7.... Lenny Green, 1961-64 Jimmie Hall, 1964-66 Frank Quilici, 1967-70 Paul Ray Powell, 1971 Jim Nettles, 1971-72 Jerry Terrell, 1973-74 Danny Walton, 1975 Dave McKay, 1975-76 Rob Wilfong, 1977-82 Larry Milbourne, 1982 Boomer Wells, 1982 Scott Ullger, 1983 Dave Meier, 1984-85 Greg Gagne, 1987-92 Denny Hocking, 1993-2003 Joe Mauer, 2004-12 I expect this to turn into a "my favorite Mauer moment" thread, but it's worth noting that at least a couple of guys held this number immediately preceding Mauer's arrival. It looks like it's been in use solidly since the Twins 1st World Series year (26 seasons) by just three guys: Gagne, Hocking and Mauer. But I'll go with Rob Wilfong because I SWEAR TO GAWD his baseball card was stalking me as a child. It seems like every damn pack a 12-year-old Twin opened went the same way.... 1. "I wonder if there are any players from my favorite team, the Minnesota Twins, in this pack?" 2. Shuffle quickly through them. 3. "HEY! IT'S A TWI.... 4. ....oh. Another Rob Wilfong card. That makes eighteen."
  6. The Strib's Howard Sinker does a thought-by-though breakdown of the Twins. He's a little crabby: Section 219: Breaking down the Twins (because someone asked me to do that) | StarTribune.com
  7. Twins' Worley excited to pitch at Target Field I really am looking forward to seeing this guy. I just hope he's healthy.
  8. To countdown the days until pitchers and catchers report, we're looking at which Twins had the number for that day. With 13 days left, what is your favorite memory of these Twins players? 12 Bernie Allen, 1962-63 Ron Henry, 1964 Joe McCabe, 1964 Cesar Tovar, 1965-72 Danny Walton, 1973 Eric Soderholm, 1973-76 Rich Chiles, 1977-78 Rick Sofield, 1979-81 Lenny Faedo, 1982-84 Tack Wilson, 1983 Mark Salas, 1985-87 Brian Harper, 1988-93 Matt Merullo, 1995 Chip Hale, 1996 Todd Walker, 1997-2000 Danny Ardoin, 2000 Tom Prince, 2001-03 Mike Ryan, 2004-05 Jason Tyner, 2006-07 Adam Everett, 2008 Alexi Casilla, 2010-121 Lots of sentimntal choices to choose from here. Walker is on this list again (because Chip Hale was gone.) Jason Tyner might be one of the most underrated Twins ever. Check out his numbers sometime. Ditto Brian Harper. Is he in the Twins HOF? I was going to go with Chip Hale, but it turns out he's not the guy I'm thinking of. Who was the guy who in the late 90s, tore up his knee to a ball in right field, but got up, limped over and thre the ball back in? Does anyone else remember that? I think it was the last thing he did in his career. Most competetive thing I ever saw. But since that wasn't Hale, I'll go with noodle-arm Harper. Plus...the 'stache.
  9. To countdown the days until pitchers and catchers report, we're looking at which Twins had the number for that day. With 13 days left, what is your favorite memory of these Twins players? Bill Tuttle Rich Reese John Roseboro Rich Woodson Tim Lundstedt Mike Pagliarulo Todd Walker Jerry White I'm going with Walker. When The Voice Of Reason and I were moving to MN, we took off a couple of months and traveled the US. We found ourselves somewhere in Louisiana in the middle of the summer, and it was exactly when the minor league (AA?) All-star game was going. It happened to be in Shreveport Louisiana. Walker was in that All-Star game, and I think he was either from or playing for Shreveport, so there was quite a bit of hype around him. We made it there and attended the ball game. I missed a foul ball by about four inches. Because of all that, we were really rooting for him when he came up in the 90s. He never really fulfilled that promise, but he had a decent enough career.
  10. Probably both. But I dont' have any problem with Butera getting 150 of so AB like he did last year. It's sometimes nice to have a defensive specialist on the roster when the other two catchers are everyday guys (and suspect defensively.) Also, I'd much rather Herrmann gets more AB in the minors.
  11. Sano #12. So six Twins in the top 100. Up from four last year.
  12. Buxton - #19. Huh, I guess Rosario, who was ranked as the #6 prospect at 2B, isn't going to make the list.
  13. Is that list up somewhere? Could you add a link?
  14. Kyle Gibson is #49. That bodes well, I think.
  15. Tom Powers: Minnesota Twins' Opening Day roster? You read it here first, again - TwinCities.com For the most part, I agree with him, though I think there is no way Butera doesn't make the roster.
  16. I'm wondering if Berrios might make the list, too.
  17. This is a great story Seth. The way he finished last year is really encouraging. I"m worried we're overestimating Meyer, but I think we might be underestimating May.
  18. Correia expects to eat up innings for Twins
  19. I think there is a fallacy here. Hitting catchers are considered more valuable if they catch because the drop off is so huge to their replacements. But in this case, Mauer not catching just means Ryan Doumit is. The only difference between Doumit catching and Mauer at DH or vice versa is the difference in defense - and Mauer wasn't all that great defensively last year. In general, I agree with the point that Mauer will be more valuable when he catches. But for this year and next, so long as Doumit is healthy, I'd like to see the Twins take it easy on both. (Now, when one is hurt, and the option is Butera, then I'm all for driving them into the ground....)
  20. I'll try and update this as they're announced. MLB.com's Top 100 Prospects to be revealed Tuesday | MLB.com: News MLB.com is revealing their top 100 list at 8:00 (Central) tonight (Tues). I"m excited to see how many Twins are in the top 100. Any guesses and where they'll be? Mine... Sano - 5-15 Buxton - 25-35 Meyer - 50-60 Rosario - 50-60 Arcia - 70-85 Hicks - 90-100
  21. I prefer the idiosyncrasies. Like "No Smoking In The Metrodome" hand signal or the "fingers walking" signal he's share with Gaetti when people left early.
  22. To countdown the days til pitchers and catchers report, we're going to list the Twins with those numbers (thanks to this awesome list) and let you can reminisce about one of theM. So who is the poster boy for day #14.... Pedro Ramos, 1961 Sam Mele, 1961-67 (Manager) Danny Monzon, 1972-73 Glenn Borgmann, 1974-79 Pete Mackanin, 1980-81 Kent Hrbek, 1982-94 Sam Mele was a hell of a manager and turned the Twins into contenders, but I need to go with my hometown boy Kent Hrbek. He gets credit because he is the only time I correlate "Hometown" and "Bloomington". I didn't move to Bloomington until 6th grade, and that was from Minneapolis, which is where I live now and from which I plan to never leave. Usually that's my hometown. Except when I can claim Herbie.
  23. Some post-TwinsFest notes and a free agent update | StarTribune.com But they've also had little contact....
  24. So who is your favorite #15? To countdown the days til pitchers and catchers report, we're going to list the Twins with those numbers (thanks to this awesome list) and let you pick your favorite. So who is the poster boy for day #15.... Jack Kralick, 1961-63 Bill Dailey, 1963-64 Al Worthington, 1964-68 George Mitterwald, 1969-73 Randy Hundley, 1974 Dan Ford, 1975-78 Ron Jackson, 1979-81 Tim Laudner, 1981-89 Lenny Webster, 1991-93 Ron Coomer, 1995 Dave Hollins, 1996 Darrin Jackson, 1997 Jon Shave, 1998 Cristian Guzman, 1999-2004 Brent Abernathy, 2005 Phil Nevin, 2006 Glen Perkins, 2008-12 I remember being way to excited about Guzy early in his career, but the one I want to laud is Dave Hollins. His big year was 1993, the year the Phils went to the World Series. He came to the Twins much later when he was just about washed out of baseball. The played well enough for the Twins to flip him for..... David Ortiz. But mostly I liked him because his nickname was "Head." The man had an enormous head. It's most fun when you say it with a Scottish accent.
