  2. I remember the 2011 draft unfolding and, as the Twins approached their pick at 30, being really unhappy about them potentially taking Gilmartin. I knew they liked him and he totally fit what they did in the draft. When he went at 28, I breathed a huge sigh of relief... and then they took Levi Michael. The Braves went on to give Gilmartin $1.134m as a signing bonus and got a pitcher that was considered near major-league ready by the end of his first full season. Yes, Gilmartin was brutal in 2013 and doesn't profile as the same pitcher he did a year ago, but the Twins got him when his value was low and were able to get the Braves to take Doumit's full salary back? That move is impossible for Twins fans not to like.
  3. One of my favorite things to do in regards to this website - whether in conjunction with the Prospect Handbook or not - is to have an ongoing dialogue with scouts in the organization. My favorite article I've ever posted still remains the interview I did with West Coast Scouting Supervisor Sean Johnson. In the 2013 edition of the handbook, I had an interview with Jack Powell, who is the scout responsible for signing Byron Buxton. The full interview was available in the book, with a brief preview here. [PRBREAK][/PRBREAK] In an effort to make/keep the tradition of featuring a scout in each year's handbook, I reached out to one of the newest members of the Twins scouting fraternity: Freddie Thon. This picture of Freddie was during his minor-league All-Star days of 2006, but you get the point - he's a former baseballer and now his job is to locate the next generation of Twins prospects. Located primarily in southern Florida and Puerto Rico, Thon's job is especially important, given the success the Twins have had in that area. I'd love for you to read the whole interview, but that's only going to be available in the Handbook (which is available in both paperback and eBook versions). Some excerpts here: Freddie talks about his background, which is very baseball heavy and also his path from high school through college and into the minor leagues. Of course, I had to ask him about next year's draft class: Freddie spoke at length about many other things as well. Pick up the Handbook, you won't be disappointed.
  4. The Amazon Marketplace (and all other big-time marketplaces) will pick it up, but it usually takes 6-8 weeks (or at least that's the notification that we received).
  5. Here it is. Holy spit was that more work than I thought it was going to be. :| Anyway, here's the link to the eBook: http://www.lulu.com/shop/seth-stohs/minnesota-twins-prospect-handbook-2014-pdf/ebook/product-21359874.html Available for immediate download at $10.99.
  6. The amazon process as it was described takes a couple weeks for them to pick up. I'm gonna talk to Seth shortly and (fingers-crossed) hopefully the ebook can be ready to go tonight.
  7. I just did a little research on getting the book on the Amazon market. It appears that it will be on there automatically, but not for awhile, and for a much higher price than the PDF version. (Last year's book is currently available on Amazon for $29.95.)
  8. If you watched last night's hangout, he talked about his on-going bout with kidney stones. Those little guys are slowing him down.
  9. Seth's working on it... he's also got some other stuff going on... I'll leave it at that. Hopefully it will be soon though.
  10. I may over-value the arms, but given the lack of quality arms the last three seasons, I realize how important they - or the hope of them - are.
  11. According to the guru (Seth), the Twins have been messing it up since he signed and now they've got it right. He'll be Jorge Felix going forward. (At least we hope so, that's how we've been doing it in the Handbook.)
  12. Updated to include (assumed) Pelfrey figures.
  13. IdahoPilgrim is all over it. Another rule is that you can't option players with 5+ years of experience without their consent, even if they have all three options remaining. (Which is why you see NA under options on the R&P page). Regardless, players with 5+ years of experience have more rights than players without it.
  14. I'm not going to disagree with anyone that thinks that Rosario should be higher, but I think it's close regardless. Consider their low-A season, Rosario (at age 20) and Polanco (at age 19). Polanco had a higher average (.308 to .296) and OBP (.362 to .345). Rosario had the advantage in both HR, SLG and OPS, but in terms of XBH, only had one more than Polanco. Neither are burners, so Polanco's double totals suggest they're a result of having some power to the gaps. Polanco's K rate (only 11% of PAs) is also phenomenal, both for someone his age and with that many extra base hits. Another feather in Polanco's cap is that he had no platoon splits as a switch-hitter. Rosario handled left-handed pitchers well too, but he's always been touted as an advanced hitter. Defensively, even though they play the same position, I'm giving a slight nod to Polanco. A second baseman that can fill it at shortstop has got to be better than a second baseman that also plays the outfield. Obviously, Polanco needs to prove himself against more advance competition, and AA probably won't happen until 2015, but the points above all had me tip the scale slightly in Polanco's favor.
  15. I would prefer Owings to Santana for sure. I really like Polanco, but don't seen him as a shortstop (mostly because the Twins preferred Goodrum to Polanco at SS). The D-backs are rumored to be looking for a front-end pitcher, so I can't see how they would match up. Maybe if Tanaka, Garza, Santana, Jimenez all sign elsewhere, and the Twins add another starter or two, they could make Gibson available. Though not high-end, he does over some mid-rotation potential. I probably wouldn't make that straight-up trade if I was the Diamondbacks, and, as a Twins fans, I'm not sure I want to give up Gibson yet either. The addition of Owings could allow the Twins to shop guys like Santana and Florimon though, knowing that they have second covered and have Escobar in a utility role. Plus, the Dbacks have Hill, Gregarious and Pennington covering those spots, so Owings could be used as trade bait.
  16. Exactly right, only replace "optioned" with "placed on waivers".

  18. The Winter Meetings have come to an end and with that, so will our special edition Google Hangouts. We do have one left, though, and you can watch it here, live at 9pm. <iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/1v0aMRMDe-0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> [PRBREAK][/PRBREAK]Wednesday night we talked about potentially adding Pelfrey and/or Arroyo and what it could mean for the starting pitching staff. We also discussed Josmil Pinto's shoulder, the signing of a Indy League MVP, the return of former scouts and the future of Liam Hendriks. <iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/cWMRlzaRW5E" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> You can also use the links below to find it on iTunes and on YouTube. ------ Tuesday night's episode featuring John Bonnes can be seen below. MIKE PELFREY!! <iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/Wm5xzNjE8q0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> While the Big Pelf took up a too-large segment of our show, it was very entertaining to visibly see John Bonnes's blood pressure go up at the idea of re-signing him. John also talked about TwinsDaily's Winter Meltdown and other current endeavors (not limited to TwinsDaily's re-upping with the Cedar Rapids Kernels). We addressed other news of the day - such as the rumored interest in Stephen Drew - and answered random questions. So once you get by the first three minutes of confusion, you're in for a real treat! You can view the video embed above, the link to or the audio-only version here on iTunes at https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/twinshangout-podcast/id776886965?mt=2.--------- Guestless on a Monday. Seth and I spent an hour talking about today's Twins news. Well, it was like 57 minutes of talking about the Twins and four minutes of utter confusion when Jeremy's volume stopped working. We were able to reconnect the old school way - telephone - to complete our discussion and even made some room for the day's newest news: Rajai Davis to the Twins? Oh, just another day in the life of a Twins fan. <iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/d5Wc5BU3ZWc" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> You can view the video embed above, the link to or the audio-only version here on iTunes at https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/twinshangout-podcast/id776886965?mt=2 (though that seems to be an episode behind).----------------------------- Sunday edition: Seth and Jeremy were joined by 1500 ESPN/Eyewitness News' Doogie Wolfson as we kicked off our Winter Meetings Edition. When it comes to local sports, no one knows it better than Doogie. Doogie suggested the Twins might be busy this week, what positions they may be targeting as well as a few players who the team might be targeting for extensions. He also mentioned one (surprise?) name that may be available in trade talks. Drink it all in. video or Audio-only?<iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/kKpwZaCotQk" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> --- Please leave your questions/comments below. If you're viewing live, you can ask questions during the show using the Q and A feature that we enable. These Hangouts are unlikely to last full hours each night, but this is great way to catch up on your Twins-related news of the day without having to pay close attention for the rest of the day.
