  1. A question about the pitching? The Twins are historically near the top of the list for least walks allowed. Walking batters in this organization is not a good idea. Call down to Houston and ask Sammy what happens. Is this so philosophically engrained in our pitchers that corners become a thing to be avoided? Why not work around a guy with first open, to get to a lesser evil? Carl Pavanno talked often of this and did it. (Save the shots at CP, he is the only Twins pitcher I could think of who would do that). The Twins throw a lot of strikes, but if you are only throwing strikes to not walk anyone, those are not the kind of strikes that get people out.
  2. Everyone, including myself has taken turns defending the honor of specific players. By now this includes the entire roster, with the exception of the batboy. But to clarify my previous submission, it is the sum of these parts that is the problem. A Dozier is a nice 2B, an Escobar could play short or second for many good teams, and a Suzuki could catch for a contender. But those teams will have superior players at other positions, and these guys will be major league level "fill ins". Well that might be a bit harsh, but they will not be the engine that drives the train. They are all major league level players, and in some cases very decent ones. But there are too many clustered on one team at one time. A couple examples, with no particular bias.... Dozier hit in the 3 hole this year. Plouffe hit in the 4 hole. I do not mean to say that on those days they were not the TWINS best options, what I mean to say is that if they are, that is a reflection on the entire roster as it currently is constructed!
  3. My oldest son made this point yesterday when talking about the Twins. To paraphrase, we have become satisfied with the level of play. We are satisfied to have a SS in CF, a utility guy playing short, someone in left we picked up, a third baseman who is at best mildly ordinary, and collectively possibly the worst SP staff in the majors, a catcher who cannot throw out runners. I excused Dozier because he can field with the best, and Arcia because he is 23 and has potential where he is. So does Santanna, but not out there, with us not having a SS. His point, and I agree is this team has lost 90 games 3 (4) years in a row. And this team as it is now fielded will continue to lose. Maybe the question should be, IS there only one spot open? Or SHOULD there only be one spot open. In theory, if you lose 90 for four years in a row, there should be 25 spots open!
  4. Delbinson Romero not included? Do we really need to see Chris Hermann yet again? They KNOW what the results will be. He is what he is. You don't need to see him again to evaluate. Several of these spots were awarded as favors. But it is what it is. Hopefully they rest Mauer, Dozier, Plouffie, and Suzukiie. And some of the relievers. But out of the 8 probably the only true look see needs to be Pinto BEHIND THE PLATE, not at DH. And Hicks in center so Santanna can get a look at short. Tonkin and Darnell in spot situations. I wonder how Suzuki's upcoming potential for bonuses will affect Gardies distribution of playing time?
  5. Actually he is just like all the other twins pitchers..... An inning or to of tease... (Frankly a more interesting tease than the others). Then BOOM! It could be as simple as the low strikeout rates do not allow you to get out of a pickle? But whatever the reason it's still BOOM GOES THE DYNAMITE!!
  6. Things I thought I would never see.... Hitter if the day: Pedro Florimon
  7. So if Farris is hitting ok, and playing "very good defense", why do we go out and get a Shaefer? I am not pretending to be an expert on eithers abilities, especially Farris, just more or less curious on the rationale, or lack thereof. Maybe if we brought Farris up to play center we could let Santanna get in some time at SS, ROFL! I hope the whole Santanna thing is not another of Gardy's saying one thing, and doing another. He has some what of a history of that.
  8. The only thing I would "buy" is a very good SP! Adding a Hunter for two years to play LF does not make this a better team long term. And history shows that once signed, especially if Gardy remains, means he is here for two years! Good or bad. See Willingham. If you truly want the fastest progression then you have to throw the new guys out there, and move forth. It is not going to be instant success, but dribbling them in one at a time just drags out the process. Plus it will be entertaining. Please do not get stuck in the middle adding worn out old veterans, taking up playing time. We just got done doing that!
  9. I agree with the excitement part of this comment... And with the regression part.... But might I add, that the Twins historically do not make any changes until a third of the year is gone. Ergo, Buxton, Sano, Berrios et al might get here when we are 8 out already. It seems the list of SP is about 8 deep, pick any 5 you like. None at this time are deemed expert at missing bats. Something has to be done to improve the defense on the left side. And since Santanna is really never going to be the future CF, it borders on criminal the he is killing time out there. Put Parm in left, Shaefer in center, Santanna at SS, for the balance of the year. You get to evaluate Parm and Santanna at once. After those assessments are made you can then decide what you need. But right now as the lineup reads, you need a SS with range, a center fielder who is actually an outfielder, an a LF who can catch some of the many batted balls the aforementioned SP staff is assured of supplying.
  10. I don't have a problem with the names as much as the philosophy. I read somewhere, and it seems to be, that TR has nixed the 3 headed catcher? If that is true, it is not good for either Pinto, or Hermann, depending on the ability of Vargas to hold the DH spot. And while Escobar is "stable" at short, he is not the shortstop you will find on a low strikeout, but hopefully winning team. I admit he has hit far better, for far longer than I expected. But for all the talk of the lack of outfield coverage hurting the pitchers, the left side of the infield with him and Plouffe leaves a lot of ground balls to be returned to the infield by the left fielder!
  11. Currently I agree, short of moving Mauer over there (heaven forbid) there is no one currently to replace him. But I would put him in left a few times, Eddy E to third, and Santanna at SS. This lets you see what you have or don't have. Remember, if you think we have a lot of first baseman now, what happens of Sano cannot handle third, or his arm does not recover enough to make those throws?
  12. The key to the series, and remainder of the season, is whether the Twins use the remaining games to evaluate talent rather than pad the win total. If they use this time to do that, and lose 100 games (unlikely), is better than going all out and still losing 90. If they don't, that means they are managing for their jobs, and next years season ticket sales. That is not the way to build for the future. And to preempt the argument that you owe it to the league standings to put your most competitive team out there, all you should need to do is use the same philosophy in all the remaining games, a level playing ground so to speak.
  13. I agree, Arcia is better than advertised, there is definitely an upside there. He will never be Tori Hunter, because he will be a better hitter, and poorer fielder. BUT, he has a strong accurate arm, he plays hard, and he already goes fairly decent to his left. His most glaring weakness is going back to his right in the gap. Some of that will get better, and some of that Buxton will cure. Nothing is ever a sure thing, but trading Arcia, as some advocate would end up being an organizational mistake of epic proportions!
  14. Since the question was what would "you" do with Pinto, this could be considered a moot point...... But since TR has more or less nixed 3 catchers, and RG won't DH a catcher, the part time catcher and DH idea are not gonna happen. They should but won't. And if Twins pitchers love to pitch to Kurt, they should show that love by staying out there with him past the 5th inning! Or does sitting next to him in the dugout count? Lastly, will Perkins opinion of Josmil define his entire career? That's a lot of blame for someone who did not block a slider in the dirt!
  15. Simple answer, I would catch him 70\30, with Suzuki as the back up. DH then depending on situations. But that won't happen. Neither will full time DH. I am afraid you cannot use the words Pinto and Gardy in the same sentence, or same dugout. If Gardy is still here, Pinto cannot DH without us returning to the days of 3 catchers. What if your starting catcher gets hurt, and you lose your DH for maybe 3 innings in a 162 game season. And with the continual [need] for 13 pitchers, that leaves one with another season of the short bench syndrome! More Hermann? I have not heard of Pinto playing OF in Rochester? So the Arcia\Pinto duo is out, plus Arcia is just too young to platoon. If you platooned every lefty who did not hit left handed pitching, you would need 30 man rosters. (Btw Ruesse had an interesting bit on that Sunday). I like Pinto, and would have never resigned Suzuki. He is a nice catcher, and tough. But he is not the future. Same as Escobar at short. The Twins have half frittered away chances to evaluate, and give experience. To avoid 90 losses? I know this comment has wandered seemingly off topic, but not really. It goes to the core of the stuck in the middle of the road philosophy that has cost the Twins at least a year of major league development time.
