  1. Wow, Severino originally signed for 1.9m. Good for him. From the fangraphs write up - https://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/the-braves-punishment-is-in-and-its-harsh/ "Signed for $1.9 million out of the Dominican Republic, Severino is a switch-hitting middle infielder with surprising power for his size. Scouts think his long-term defensive home is second base and are skeptical about his long-term ability to make contact. He takes big, violent swings but still hit .286/.345/.444 in the GCL this year."
  2. I am firmly in the camp that believes payroll will always be around 110m or so another SP at 15m/year is doable for four years. After that, it might not be. I'm ok with putting a package of Gordon, Romero/Gonsalves and, say, Thorpe for a solid pitcher but I'm not sure who/where we'd find that.
  3. This wasn't the first year the Twins used the bonus pool to nab extra talent - they did it in 2015 and 2016 as well. And they traded Kinztler, a pending FA, at the deadline. I'm not sure that's different than the other deadline deals like Liriano for Hernandez and Escobar. They've used all their bonus pool money every year (assuming they do something with the 1.25 they have left this year). I'm not sure that Littell and Enns is better than Ynoa and 4m but I'm not sure they aren't, either. Maybe they could have done something else with that 4m? The IBP money fiasco this year isn't, in my mind, an example of them being creative. They went from a top Latin American prospect to two c prospects with a few failed targets in between.
  4. I think we'll get a Lynn or Cobb in FA, might make a trade and/or grab a guy like Jaime Garcia in FA as well. Darvish is a pipe dream. No way do we start the season with only Santana, Berrios, Gibson, Mejia, ????
  5. They've got Harper coming and Clint Frazier is a young stud who stumbled a bit last year. They could put Stanton at DH/1B or something (last year their primary 1B and DH were Matt Holiday and Chris Carter, uff-da) and that would be a major upgrade though. If they think Stanton will opt out after 3 years, I think they'd do it in a heartbeat. That lineup is older than I thought though so I don't think they want to be paying him 30m+ in eight years.
  6. The window is open now. It might be wider in 2019 but there is no reason to not expect the playoffs this year.
  7. Conversely, you could say that the Twins originally zeroed in on a top prospect from Latin America (Marte), lost him somehow, zeroed in on another top prospect (Ohtani), didn't get him either. Pivoted to a former top prospect who lost some helium (Maitan) but were rejected and ended up settling for two C-level prospects.
  8. Yeah, yeah. We hear that all the time. How long did the Yankees ace last in that game?
  9. I keep seeing this Russia stuff just drip, drip, drip out. With two convictions and two guys already facing charges - and these are big players in the Trump campaign - I just don't see how this doesn't end the Trump presidency in some way.
  10. Yeah, I like him too. I agree, look at BA, BP, fangraphs, Sickels, mlb.com and you'll get a lot better idea about a player/system. It's also interesting to see how different people view things - a player's height, are strikeouts a problem, how much is 'character' a thing, etc. But we really do have a lot of solid analysis for fans. I remember the dark ages where we were just told that the Twins had a couple pretty good prospects and couldn't really follow them.
  11. Nah, Twins could've won a one-game playoff and certainly could have taken a series from Cleveland. Sure, they would've been underdogs but (depending on the price) upgrading the roster would have been a worthwhile premise for the FO. In any event, the past is the past. The Twins window is currently open and it'll be interesting to see how Lavine deals with it.
  12. Yeah, he's fair. I'm not sure he's the best at the actual prospecting part - I like mlb.com's team a lot more and over the years, BP has had some great ones (but they keep getting hired by real teams).
  13. So I do think pitching - especially mid-level pitching - is going to be more expensive than we thought. Darvish is still probably 6/150 but Lynn and Cobb are probably 60m+ guys now. A guy like Jaime Garcia who mlbtraderumors guessed would get 2/16 can probably get more years and a more per year too.
  14. Baddoo could do it on the position player side. Graterol and Thorpe have true ace potential (in the last five years or so, only six or seven Twins prospects could arguably have that kind of upside - Meyer, Stewart, Jay, Berrios, Thorpe and maybe Romero and Graterol). The "Kepler second tier" prospect group (not quite elite but damn good, probably ranked 20-40ish on lists) could include quite a number of these guys like Kiriloff, Rooker, Gordon, Miranda (I like him a lot, too), etc.
  15. Have you ever gone to other teams milb forums? God, other teams hated Bust-on. But it was jealousy.
  16. The reality is that Lavine is using the same roadmap that Ryan used but so far his moves are working out. And that's basically what we should expect. Both stayed cheap in FA, signed discount bullpen arms. Both signed rule v picks and made waiver claims, let young guys play, traded off upcoming FA, etc. Our payroll was bottom third last year. I expect it will remain bottom third for the foreseeable future. So Levine is going to have to make trades, find FA bargains and rely on young players. That's more or less been what the Twins have had to do for 25 years and it'll continue. I liked last years draft but I'm not ready to put it ahead of 2012 or 2016 (the secret of all three drafts was the number of picks in the first few rounds, not necessarily high draft position). IBP money for prospects is fine with me. I'd have been fine with them signing someone, too. Just so long as they use it. We won't know how good Lavine is for several years but I like him a lot and think he'll be a very good GM. But I do think we should wait a little bit for all this excitement.
  17. He's been very high on Buxton, Kepler and Rosario (he might be the high man on Rosario). He did think Berrios' height would move him to the pen but I think he's been, more or less, fair to the Twins. He also was the high man on our system last offseason, ranking us #11 while BA had us around #20 or so. I think he didn't like our haul b/c the prospects we got back were meh types. At best, we probably got a back-up defensive catcher and a low level avg OF or 4th OFer.
  18. Man, it'll be interesting to see how TD rejoices once the new FO actually makes a move for something slightly better than a C prospect or mid-level FA.
  19. That was the original deal. But when they found an anomaly in his arm, they demanded another pick from Aiken - Mac Marshall. Aiken and his agent said no, stalemate happened and none of the three kids were able to sign. Nix was able to file grievance.
  20. Not a bad deal for the Cubs. Hopefully this gets the hot stove going.
  21. That's not quite right. People were pissed that the Astros were using the injury as a way to secure a third player (after Jacob Nix) named Mac Marshall out of Aiken's bonus. The medical issue they saw was similar to other picks and those picks had their bonuses lowered by several hundred thousand dollars, not 1.5m, which coincidentally happened to be Marshall's demand. Nix and Marshall's agreements were therefore locked into a third party (Aiken). Nix filed his grievance against the Astros and won (Astros settled for 1m+ before the arbitrator ruled against them). I'm hoping that the Twins didn't **** over Marte on the hopes of getting a better prospect but I think they did.
  22. Honestly, I'm not sure but I think it's roughly fair. 1m on the IBP isn't all that much - most elite players sign for more and you can go the quantity route and nab some guys for less - so I think what we got in return - avg ML regular guys as ceilings - is decent. Also, we're not paying money (Pohlad = cheap) but rather giving our ability to spend money to the other teams. At the end of the day, I think this was a defensible move and far better than not doing anything (which is what I thought they'd do) but it's also not evidence that Levine is playing three dimensional chess while Ryan would be playing checkers.
