  1. If I recall correctly, Stengel's actual quote is "Good pitching will always stop good hitting and vice versa."
  2. That, and because I'm originally from Minnesota, I always expect the worst.
  3. Because no series at the Big A will ever be the same for me: True story: I was at this game. I was in the upper portion of the uppermost deck, somewhere between home and first...and I could see the emory board float to the grass, without binoculars. http://images.performgroup.com/di/library/sporting_news/2b/53/joeniekro-nailfile-mlb-ftr-080317jpg_15ba7al1qkc4y11bt0n6hnobwb.jpg?t=-1473562299&w=960&quality=70 and Mr Umpire had no trouble seeing it, either
  4. My prediction (because I'm from Minnesota originally): Cole Calhoun (sitting at .165/.193/.209 for the year) is due for a breakout.
  5. (kangaroos) can become aggressive if they are fed something healthy like broccoli or carrots. Something I have in common with kangaroos.
  6. I have always believed that Erickson hurt his arm at Boston on May 7th that year (1991), throwing his third straight complete game. IMO he was never the same pitcher after that. Velocity down, control down, slider not quite the same.
  7. Remember when you took a swing, hit the sweet spot, and it felt like you hadn't even hit the baseball? No resistance at all, as opposed to when you got one off the end of the bat and it felt like the baseball was a shotput? That's "barreling" it. Pitchers try to avoid that...
  8. More use of his 4 seam FB, less 2 seam has been the key, IMO. He gets ahead, he's able to generate swings and misses, and he doesn't get so many bad 2 seam FBs nailed when he's behind in the count. All of that sets up his slider so much better.
  9. Pretty sure she's asking you to shave your legs, RB.
  10. I've always been disappointed Gant didn't get ejected for kneeing poor Hrbek in the midsection with such violence and bad intent.
  11. I wonder why nobody in St. Louis has written the “Kolten Wong Song”. Once it is written, I will wonder why it isn’t sung by Paul DeJong. Even one verse would be too long.
  12. Kind of a big week, IMO. A 4-3 week sort of mildly righted the ship. I know it’s early, but a bad week here, giving back the small gain from this weekend, might be nearly fatal. Keep this together and hope Buxton and Castro are back soon, and whatever is going on with Sano resolves itself quickly. Part of the problem is the quality of reserves available. We need regulars on the field as much as possible.
  13. Grossman compounded the problem by making an error after the ball hit off the wall, but Grossman wasn’t the primary problem. I’m not at all sure Kepler catches that, by the way....but in any case Kepler WASNT out in RF, which was known to Molitor and if anything should be a reason FOR a new pitcher less likely to be penalized by Grossman, not an excuse for leaving Odorizzi in. Grossman hadn’t given up the HR to Palka previously, didn’t walk the lead off hitter on five pitches not close, and didn’t give up the rocket that got over Grossman’s head. Odorizzi was out of gas, no longer making quality pitches. This has been a continuing issue for Molitor, IMO. He is very prone to pulling his starter only AFTER damage has been done.
  14. And how’d that work out? The problem with “getting more from your starter” is that it usually doesn’t work. You end up going to the pen anyway—witness last night—only now it’s after the damage has been done. And of course Grossman is a problem...but he’s completely unrelated to Molitor’s decision to send an obviously wobbling Odorizzi back out there.
  15. Several of us in the game thread last night said the same, BEFORE Odorizzi lost the lead. That was at least the 5th time so far this year that something similar has happened. Ridiculous.
  16. the Twins led the ALC from Apr 4-12, and again from Apr 18-20. I suggest Tabasco.
  17. Mrs Chief still pretty miffed over letting Odorizzi give up the lead. Somehow she got Falvey on the phone.
