  1. From Fangraphs' DRS description: In general, DRS isn’t perfect because it doesn’t factor in shifts, positioning.... https://www.fangraphs.com/library/defense/drs/ Also, for the record, Machado was a combined -13 DRS at SS in 2018. https://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=11493&position=3B#fielding Personally, I'd be fine with Machado playing SS for the Twins. But his defense there is below average, and it has nothing to do with positioning. Also, have we officially written off Gordon?
  2. I think the intent is to get the same (or even more) IP from the same guy. But he starts his third time through the order with the opponent's 4th or 5th hitter, instead of starting from the top of the order.
  3. I have to admit....when pondering the possible problems with this strategy, "an 8 run lead in the 5th" had not crossed my mind. Even once.
  4. I also have no interest in winning the WAR/$ spent championship. I want to watch the Twins win the World Series championship.
  5. http://www.startribune.com/fired-gophers-ticket-director-charged-in-alleged-long-running-ticket-order-scheme/499979971/ The person in charge of selling tickets to UofM athletics has been fired, and criminal charges filed. Apparently, he was attempting to defraud UofM fans by collecting actual cash money to watch this ****show. ba-dum-tschhhh.
  6. I know it's just a joke by Boras, and it's actually sort of clever, but there's a reason he used the Twins. One of Falvey/Levine's jobs (and ownership's job) is to remove the perception from fans, players and agents that the Twins are the backwater of MLB. For fans, the Twins need to figure out how to become as hot a topic as the Vikings in the region. Or at least a close second, rather than the very distant second they are currently. It can be done. As for players and agents, It's not just about money when players decide who to play for. When Verlander was up for trade from Detroit, one of the primary arguments used here against the idea was "he won't come to the Twins." If that's true, it's a problem, and one that needs fixing. The first thing they have to do, IMO, is to start taking themselves seriously. Way less talk about what they can't do, and way more action proving they not only can, but will, play at the highest level. No free agent is "too expensive." No contract is too much. They obviously do have restrictions. They can't sign everyone, and some contracts are just bad ideas. But there's no reason Manny Machado should be out of reach, and there needs to be a change where nobody, including Machado, thinks he's out of reach.
  7. On the basis there isnt much reason they couldn't push payroll to $150m.
  8. That cant be the first time you've looked at Delmonsie and had that reaction, now can it?
  9. This is a blueprint I could get behind. It might take a 3 yr deal to get Donaldson though, and the Reds trade might be a little light.
  10. Well if your goal is to get to the end of the road, and you don't care who gets there ahead of you, great. But if you want to get there first, I think you need to find a way to get the Lamborghini. And I want the Twins to get there first.
  11. If it's easier for a LH throwing left fielder to stop a ball down the line and make the throw to second, shouldn't we then look for LH throwing third basemen, for ground balls between them and the line, based on the same reasoning?
  12. The throws are shorter, but more likely to be a double anyway? I'm skeptical. And if I were in charge, I'd lose no sleep over the handedness of my outfielders.
  13. And the issue will be reversed on balls in the gaps, no? This is a non issue.
  14. We're currently "enjoying" the fruits of what was universally called one of the top 3 farm systems in baseball. Why will the next rebuild be better than that one?
  15. You're right, Tom...I'm groaning. I have zero interest in yet another "wait till 3 yrs from now" approach.
  16. "A couple of locations on my circuit had a very strong odor of weed..." Weird. Every single blog of yours contains this exact wording.
  17. And you delete a good bat from the lineup, in favor of a bat already demonstrated to be not worthy of said spot.
  18. Players DO get hurt, which is why there’s plenty of room for a McCutcheon. He starts in right, with Kepler the fourth OFer/spare first baseman, and Cave in AAA. Or Kepler in CF, Cave on the bench, and Buxton in AAA. If nobody gets hurt, and everyone performs, great. If not, then Cave comes up, and we’re not seeing Ehire Adrianza in left.
  19. In addition to adding needed talent, set about assembling a staff that, in a relatively short time, will be getting interviews from other teams for bigger and better jobs.
  20. I think this is the exact wrong way to look at it. Having poorer options is the reason it's so important a manager make good decisions. When you have multiple good options to choose from, the decisions aren't all that critical. Leaving Verlander in or pulling him for one of several shut down relievers probably doesn't matter all that much. But when you don't have Verlander, or many shut down relief options, it's incredibly important a manager has the best available option on the mound at all times, to reduce the disadvantage he's at. You can't keep Odorizzi on the mound past the point where he's maximally effective, because he starts at a much lower point of effectiveness than a guy like Verlander. When Verlander loses 10 percent, he's stlil pretty good. When Odorizzi loses 10 percent, well, he's not. Likewise, You can't overuse your best relievers simply because you don't have many good ones, so you save them for important outs whenever possible. Making smart, short- and long-term pitching moves is one of the primary reasons managers matter. They will sometimes backfire of course, because every pitcher sometimes give up runs. But putting your pitchers, and your team, in the best possible position, way more often than not, will pay off. And putting your pitchers (and team) in bad positions too often will hurt you just the same.
