  1. $23m is a lot of money, but Mauer is sure worth a lot to the Twins right now. Others can probably calculate how much, but he is just so reliable in clutch situations.
  2. So this week is a big test. We are expected to win most of these games. If we don't we probably don't make the postseason and probably don't deserve to. Let's do it!
  3. Curtiss might have some future potential, but his ERA is now 19.64. Anyone know what the record for worst Twins' ERA is (with more than a couple of innings pitched)?
  4. I have high hopes for Trevor May as a #3-4 starter. A rotation of Santana, Berrios, May, Mejia, and Gibson would seem satisfactory to me. And if we get another good starter through trade or signing (or one of the youngsters blooming quickly) then the rotation *could be* good.
  5. Personally, this season is a success, period, regardless of what happens from now on. If we get to play a post-season game or three, so much the better, but for me this year has been about seeing progress from Sano, Polanco, Kepler, Rosario, and, especially, Buxton and Berrios. Seeing that group start to do good things more often and bad things less often makes me confident that there will be lots of post-season action over the next five years. We all knew coming in that there were serious problems in the rotation and the bullpen. And there are. If the front office can patch these holes in the next year or two, the Twins are going to be a formidable squad. The only thing that has disappointed me this year is that (due to injuries) we still don't really know what we can expect from Jay, Burdi, and Chargois, all of whom were expected to be Twins by now. Next year will be try-outs for those three and also maybe for starters such as Romero and Gonsalves. At best there will be bumps that, ideally, could have happened this year. At worst we'll lose a dozen games figuring out that some (or all) of these guys aren't good enough. I'm enjoying the stretch drive and the possibility that this team could end up playing a few games in October. But even if that doesn't happen I'll think that this season was successful.
  6. Old man not looking so good today. Senior moment?
  7. (Sorry it's a little fuzzy, but it's a math thread after all!)
  8. Isn't there one next Saturday on 9/16/17?
  9. When I was young I used to take piano lessons from a brilliant Catholic sister. She would write the date on the top of my lesson book every week. One day (you'll figure out which day) she wrote 6/6/66. We both thought that was pretty wonderful and clever, so from then on I would spend more time trying to figure out a mathematical symmetry in the date than practicing the piano. The sister moved to St. Cloud a couple of years later and my interest in piano (never all that strong) soon waned. But a couple of times over the years we would stop in St. Cloud to visit on our way through Minnesota. Out of the blue, on 10/10/10, she borrowed someone's cell phone, figured out my phone number in Portland, and called me, 44 years, 4 months, and 4 days after that lesson that we both fondly remembered. She was about 90 and still as energetic and sharp as we (my wife was also her student) remembered her. We've fallen back out of touch and I'm not sure if she is even still living, but I think of her now and then, especially when a symmetric date arrives on the calendar.
  10. Agree! Agree! More math, please!
  11. OK, you'll have to close this one out without me. I'm off to see some women's futbol and it's tacky to watch the Twins on my phone in the stands.
  12. Ugly story. Did you get to keep the movie?
  13. I can't claim to have predicted it, but it doesn't surprise me. Remember that he beat out Sano for the league HR title at Elizabethton in their first full year in the Twins' system. He's got some power.
  14. Not any more. Santana < 10 pitches per inning.
  15. We should count our blessings. It's Friday night and the Twins are not wearing the red ones.
  16. I also love the game write-ups. It was the one thing that was conspicuously missing at TD. Before these segments, I could learn more about the minor-league games than about the actual Twins games from the site content. For you to do this every day is amazing. We are in your debt!
  17. That's what we were trying to do last week, but failed (twice). Nice clutch win.
  18. I just get back from a lovely cheese tasting and turn on the game. I'm losing my appetite!
  19. Well, I'm spoiled because I have a one-mile walk to school in the morning.
  20. Right next to Amtrak. It might be easier to get there from Salem than from Beaverton or SE Portland.
  21. He looks disappointingly like April.
  22. Ouch, indeed. There was talk several decades ago about a stadium in the Delta Park area. That could be near light-rail lines now but the traffic on I-5 after the game would be ugly.
  23. I can't imagine that Portland would draw enough people over 81 games to support a team. Much different for basketball or soccer. It's not that big a city and the archetype Portlander wants to be outside *doing* something in the summer, not *watching* something. And there's no stadium and no chance that local money would build one unless all of the sudden Phil Knight decided to spend some on something not in Eugene.
  24. The Twins should call up LaMonte Wade for this inning just so that we could have Roe v Wade.
