There is no such thing as this official baseball term that you use, "blocked." Every time you use it I burst out laughing.
-
Agreed. Bring on Buxton. Pretty sure he is better in center defensively than Hicks or Santana. I bet he can bat .215 or better to!! LOL......kidding.

You have me curious. Hit me with the comparison between Hicks and Escobar in this scenario. Even if it makes me look stupid

I don't view Santana as a long term solution in CF. I'm just saying to start the season there with Escobar at short. That changes based on performance and who evolves and who regresses etc. I get it, Santana "might" regress. Escobar "may have" played beyond the level that he will play at long term. Also, Hicks "might" evolve in to a solid major league outfielder. To me, Escobar "did" produce more in 2014. So, if only for the first month or so of the season, it makes sense to put the two best performers out there and go with your best 9 players. It also sends a positive message in the clubhouse.

What ever happens, it's going to be an interesting season. It will be fun to see it all play out. I would rather see Escobar step to the plate with runners on first and second and no outs. I feel more confident in his ability to at the very least advance the runners and have a productive at bat at this moment in time. Hopefully, if Hicks gets the nod and Santana plays short, Hicks will surprise me.

The "will" and the "should" to me are two separate things. Escobar is 26 and batted 60 points higher than Hicks who is 25. Both of them are prospects and similar in age But, not similar in intangibles or results. So, I would have to disagree with the "should" part of it and perhaps replace that word with "might." Hicks is far from a sure fire prospect and certainly not worthy of taking 50 batting average points out of the lineup. He might end up being a good player. But, I say let him get there in AAA first while putting your best 9 on the field every day on the big club. Just one man's opinion though.

I like this post. My favorite part is "Take the best 25 north out of spring training and play the best 9 most of the time." Consistency with the starting lineup IMHO is a good thing. In recent years I could hear circus music playing in my head as the announcers rolled out today's lineup and batting order. I also do not agree that in the last game of a series the manager is doing a good thing by "emptying the bench" and "getting them all in there" as has been the case under recent management. I also very much agree with your comments about a winning attitude and chemistry.

Escobar .275 + Santana .319 = 594 Santana .319 + Hicks .215 = 534 Santana + Escobar = good hustle, work ethic, defense, base running My vote is Escobar SS, Santana CF, Hicks AAA = best starting point to the season and then go from there based on Hicks being Hicks or Hicks developing.

The offense was decent and should be the same or even a little better this year. I could see the defense being slightly better, but not vastly better. I am optimistic that the pitching rotation can be a bit more stable this year and thus keep the heat off of the bullpen. This should yield dividends for the offense as well because they won't have to come from behind as much. The pen appears to be a bit up in the air with quite a few good options competing for spots. The new coaching staff seems like they could be good. We have some good prospects nearing or at being ready. My guess is that they pick up 8 more wins based on these things and finish 78-84 and avoid another 90 loss season.

30 and 30 Prospects Part 2: The Players
Dr. Evil commented on Shane Wahl's blog entry in Field of Twins
I like t that you lean towards the Twins bumping their prospects forward and challenging them a little bit more aggressively than they usually seem to do. Perfection is not necessarily a prerequisite for moving them up level. IMHO -

What "laloesch" said...... "I think he's decent but not the type of player you hold up a developing top prospect for." I agree with this completely. -
Article: Who Should Be In Line For Fifth Starter Spot?

I agree with SD Buhr in that we should not be punting on opening day. However, my humble opinion is that the team will get better production out of Meyer/May than they will Milone/Nolasco over the entirety of the 2015 season. That is why I want them in the rotation from the beginning. But, that's just my opinion. Yes, I agree that spring training performance and competing for a job is a good thing. However, I feel that there is also a place for predicting future performance. If the kids have a good spring training and they are considered top prospects, they are at the age where you stick them in there and let em chuck the biscuit. -
Article: Who Should Be In Line For Fifth Starter Spot?
Dr. Evil replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
If it were my choice, I would have both May and Meyer in the rotation to start the season and Nilasco and Milone in AAA as support in case of injury. My reasoning is two fold. 1. I predict that at best, Milone and Nilasco will be below average major league starters this year. Certainly no where near sniffing a rotation spot on any contending team. By giving them spots out of spring training you would be, to some extent, resigning to a predictable result for the season. That's boring. 2. The Twins fan base is starving for something to get excited about. Albeit not probable, it is possible that both May and Meyer both latch on to the opportunity and run with it. That would make for the possibility of an exciting rotation and a team exceeding expectations. I can't speak for all fans. But for me it would be much more exciting to watch May and Meyer in 2015 than it would be to watch Nolasco and Milone muddling to a predictable result while attempting to reclaim their careers. Right or wrong in my opinion, I just feel like it's pretty obvious that Nalasco and Milone will have predictably poor results and I wish the Twins would predict the same and roll their dice with May and Meyer. -
I guess I would like to see Hicks start off in the minors with Schafer and Robinson platooning in center field. I think they should start Pelfrey on a conversion to relief pitcher but do so with him in AAA until he appears serviceable. Milone and Nolasco as the 4th and 5th starters with May and Meyer at the ready in AAA. It's a long season and there is nothing wrong with them spending the first month or two trying to get on a roll while we see if Nolasco and/or Milone can return to form. Both had been solid starters fairly recently. I prefer to keep May/Meyer in a starters role. Sometimes relievers become good starters. That is true. But, IMHO the best path for these 2 is not going from starter to reliever and back to starter. To me that is just putting extra hurdles in front of them. Also, not a big believer in tossing a starter in the pen and saying go be a reliever just because he is your next best option at starter. If we are fortunate enough to have May/Meyer both work out their final issues this year and be kicking the door down to the major leagues while at the same time Nolasco/Milone both return to form, albeit unlikely, it would be a great problem to have.

Article: Minnesota Twins Sign Reliever Tim Stauffer
Dr. Evil replied to John Bonnes's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I see the pen as maybe being like this to start. Perkins Theilbar Fein Duensing Stauffer Myer Graham Meyer starts in the pen due to the innings limit on his repaired arm. Plus, a few spot starts might be good for him too. I think they will want to see a little more than spring training out of Graham before they make a decision on him staying or going back to Atlanta. I hope they convert Pelfrey to a reliever but do so in AAA to see if he shows he can do it. May becomes the 5th starter behind Nolasco and Milone goes to AAA until he can hopefully return to form. But again, in AAA not with the big club. When they finally see enough of Nolasco to conclude that he is indeed a bust, slide Meyer in to the rotation and bring up Tonkin if he is doing well(or Pelfrey). It would be interesting to watch anyway. -
Article: Where Are We Now, Where Are We Going?
Dr. Evil replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
IMHO bad starting pitching creates pressure on other areas of a team and magnifies any shortcomings that may exist. We should, in theory, be a little better in this area in 2015. I think Hughes and Santana give us a stable 1-2 punch at the top of the rotation and Gibson will become a bit more consistent than he was last year. At times, he was real sharp and showed some good things. If Nolasco or Milone(or both) can settle in and provide some reasonable contributions we should be in decent shape. For this reason I see a bit of a trickle down effect with our outfield defense kicking out a little better results than last year and not being quite as much of a sore toe. They shouldn't be under quite as much pressure in 2015 if that makes sense. I'm a little optimistic about 2015. We should be better and also it will be fun to see some of the guys that are close perhaps getting a look. Also, I am excited to see Molitor and the new staff in action.- 25 replies

Article: Twins Non-Roster Spring Training Invites
Dr. Evil replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Lots of good points made here. Not saying it's necessarily the case with ab walker, but I am of the opinion that we could be about 10 percent more aggressive in advancing minor leaguers to the next level. Maybe ab walker to an extent is an example of this. He is sorta mashing.- 28 replies

Article: Can Aaron Hicks Be Fixed?
Dr. Evil replied to Parker Hageman's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I wonder how well Rosario can play center field. I'm thinking it would be overly optimistic to think Buxton gets to the show this year but there is probably an outside chance it could happen. IDK I'm not too excited about Hicks/Schafer in center. I hope I'm wrong though. -

The more I think about it, the more I believe the Twins will keep him in the majors. I'm guessing his locker will be next to Hunter's locker. -
Article: Can Aaron Hicks Be Fixed?
Dr. Evil replied to Parker Hageman's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
This is great! Love talking about this type of stuff! Just my opinion here, but I would place Hicks at AAA and play him every day for the first half of the season at a minimum. I am one who is not terribly optimistic about his future with the Twins. However, if he can sustain a level of performance at AAA and reinforce it through repetition, he might have a shot. I think he would need to be willing to put in a lot of extra time every day to make the jump to the majors though. Regarding his swing, and I am no hitting expert, my opinion is that he gets his lower half out in front of his upper half and then long arms the bat through the strike zone. So, he is not getting any leg power in to his swing. In the video you can see he is already picking up his front foot just before the pitcher has released the ball. Also, by the time he starts to drop the barrel of the bat towards the zone his hips are already opened up. So, my not so expert advice is, stand a little taller with his feet closer together and his hands relaxed. Get the hands in a little tighter to the body to begin with and relax the arms too. When he strides in to the ball, stride a little more towards the left side of the pitchers rubber instead of striding to the right side and opening up early. This should help him stay closed and help him coordinate his upper and lower halves together rather than fighting one another. The closest examples I can think of are David Justice and Ken Griffey Jr. I'm probably totally wrong> But, it's fun to get to have an opinion! -
I see Milone as the likely #5 starter. The end of last year aside, he has been a pretty effective pitcher. The last 2-3 spots in the pen will be interesting to see play out in spring training. If I had to guess, May and Meyer start out in the minors as starters while we see how Milone and Nilasco come out of the gate. So, maybe the pen is Perkins, Fein, Duensing, Theilbar, Pressly, Tonkin, Graham with Achter, Oliveros, Pelfrey at the ready in AAA.
-
Can Pelfrey be sent to AAA to see if he can either get on track as a starter or convert to a reliever? As injury prone as the poor guy has been, I wonder if he could become a decent reliever and stay healthy by putting fewer innings on his wing.
