  1. Yeah, I agree. I would kind of like to see Burton get in an inning in a non-pressure situation...he needs to find the bite on his slider again
  2. I guarantee I'm striking out on that last sweeping breaking ball form Gibson...hate that pitch!
  3. Incredible...that's kind of like Ruth and Gehrig going hitless.
  4. I'm assuming Dickey does not throw a slider, so is that his knuckleball that is breaking from left to right? That's some crazy action. Edit: I mean right to left
  5. Reasonable theory, chi. If that is the most significant factor, maybe we get a good game from Pelf in the nightcap too. It's a double TJ day.
  6. Gibson is night and day different from last year. In fact, the weak grounders he is causing reminds me of Deduno. Any theories about why he is so effective early this year...compared to last?
  7. It seems to me that Phil Hughes is given way too much slack in this forum and others that I follow, and should be on a shorter leash than Pelfrey and Correia. He hasn't won a game since last July, was terrible the last half of 2013 (6.65 ERA), and has come out of the box this year with 3 bad starts. Last year the Vanimal was given 10 starts before being demoted...way too many in my opinion, but necessary due to our poor depth. With Deduno miscast in the bullpen, Hughes should be given no more than 6 starts this year to figure it out. If he is still struggling after that, he needs a ticket to Rochester to try to regain form.
  8. I'm on the under also, but I think it's a good question...and with the talent waiting in the minors, I would be happy to see them in the upper 70s in wins. I have a tendency to be a little knee-jerky, and I want to believe that our pitching is on the cusp of being good after 3 great starting performances this weekend. But we have to remember that KC is by far the worst hitting team in the AL in the opening weeks. Let's see if Hughes and Pelf can keep it going in Toronto. (Closed circuit note to self...remember to come back and edit this post if our starting pitching continues to dominate against the Jays.)
  9. You, sir, are a lucky guy.
  10. You're so right, glunn, although I wish the Twins would come here more often...sucks that the Dodger games this year are only at Target Field. The cages I like are down on Western and about 120th. Not my favorite neighborhood, but they are great cages.
  11. Very cool, BigTrane! My favorite cages use Iron Mikes, so you can time the delivery better but also only see fastballs. It looks like your place throws breaking stuff too...very cool! I love HK. I spent 3 years in Shanghai and got to HK often for deals. Spectacular city!
  12. I just got back home and am more delighted than anyone to see the 7-1 score. I was hitting in the batting cages in south LA, and driving back on Crenshaw I (unwisely) tried to find the Twins game on Gameday. Inadvertently, I punched up the wrong game on my iphone, and seeing the home team behind 3-0 in the first, began swearing at Nolasco. I mentally prepared a ranting post that was going to whine that 3 bad starts by Ricky made me think we should consider sending him down to figure out what's wrong (a la Vanimal last year). Imagine my surprise when I got home and realized my mistake! I love Nolasco now! (I am so fickle)
  13. Thanks for the Deduno article, nick, and I agree 100%. I love Samuel as a starter, but he is completely miscast as a reliever. Now that the Twins have committed to the other five as starters, though, this becomes my dream scenario. All five pitch well enough that Deduno stays in the bullpen until summer, at which time Correia or Pelfrey is traded to a contender for a prospect or two, opening up a spot for Samuel.
  14. The reason Anderson still has a job is the same reason Gardy still has a job. The Pohlads don't fire baseball employees. Come work for the Twins, and know you have a job for life!
  15. He actually threw an outside curve on the first pitch after Fuld's HR. I remember because I forgot that he had a curve, since I hadn't seen one this year. You make a good point about Pelf's strong finish last year, and it's another reason I would think Hughes would have a shorter leash (despite the bigger contract).
  16. I voted no. But in related news, my $1000 bet at 1000 to 1 that Mauer would have no RBIs by April 15 is starting to look promising. 4 more RBI-less games and I'm collecting a cool mill. Don't I wish.
  17. I recognize there's another thread about the honeymoon period for the entire staff, but to some extent Pelf's leash length has something to do with how the other 4 starters are doing. Right now only Gibson has been sharp (in his only start), and Pelf actually looks better to me than the other three. He's pitching at a quicker pace, and his 2-seamer is moving very well against lefties. Pelf is a favorite of both Gardy and Anderson, so even though there is more money invested in Correia, Hughes and Nolasco, Pelf may get a longer leash than others because of his popularity. Deduno looks uncomfortable coming out of the pen, and I think will be in the rotation by June 1. It will be interesting to see who he replaces, assuming all five stay healthy. If Pelf and one of the three higher-priced free agents are both struggling by late May, and the other pitcher has worse stats than Pelf, I wouldn't be surprised if the coaching staff put the higher-priced pitcher in the pen before Pelf.
  18. I found this kind of lame, but I heard that former Twins World Series heroes Hrbeksky, Brunsy, Gaettsy, Violsy, Blylsy and the manager TKsy got a big kicksky out of it.
  19. Gonna be tough because we're banged up and they have some good pitchers going. But Hughes owns Oakland and I see him winning on Wednesday...with the temps in the 70s!
  20. Do I think you're an idiot? Hell no...bets like this are a lot of fun, and most people can afford $30. I hope you win! Do I think you're going to win? No comment...
  21. Whoa, I think you misunderstood me, Mr. Brooks! I love giving my opinion at any time, and I love hearing what others think also, especially the solid baseball minds on this forum. My post came after a quick look at the stats this morning after observing how upside-down they seem. Didn't think it was "new thread worthy", though, so I added it to this one. I can see how you concluded that I was mocking those that jump to early conclusions, but I assure you that I was not...I'm a member of that club!
  22. There is no sample size too small to prevent me from jumping to a brash conclusion. Therefore, based on the first 5 games of the season, I predict the following: 1) Kurt Suzuki and Trevor Plouffe will stun the baseball world by becoming the first hitters since Williams to hit .400. 2) Unfortunately, Mauer, Dozier, Arcia and Florimon will struggle mightily, and all bat below .200 for the year. 3) The Twins will regret extending Glen Perkins, as he will finish the year with an ERA of 12.00
  23. I thought the Twins did a great job with the honorary shirt they designed for Gardy...1000 wins, 67 ejections! I've always enjoyed Gardy's fiery nature and willingness to defend his guys...one of his better assets. It got me thinking, though...I assume Gardy got credit for a win in those 67 games he didn't finish. Kind of questionable because the Twins were behind in some of those games at the time of ejection, and they came back to win under the direction of somebody else! I wonder how many wins Cy Young would have had if he had been credited with a win for every winning game which he started, even if the team was behind at the time of his removal! Phil Hughes has to be fuming right now...under the "manager's wins" rules, he's 1-0 for the season!
  24. Regardless of whether one thinks Gardy or TK was the better manager (my personal belief is that TK was twice the manager Gardy is), I think it's difficult to argue against this statement: the primary reason Gardy and TK are in the 1000 win club is that the Pohlads don't fire managers.
  25. I "liked" a couple posts in this thread because I'm sincerely happy for Gardy, who has always seemed like a decent guy to me. But the more I think about it, the less impressed I am with this achievement. Gardy main managerial skill to me has always been the ability to create a happy clubhouse...players clearly like to play for him. But his laissez faire approach which makes him a players' coach also sometimes leads to complacency, I believe, and as fans we have suffered through some tough times. In my opinion, Gardy has always lagged behind many other managers, TK for example, in knowledge of the game and in-game management, and has not embraced some advanced statistical tools that I believe could make him a better manager. Not trying to be a spoilsport here, but sometime this July Gardy will join another select club, with much less fanfare...managers with 1000 losses. I would argue that this 1000 win milestone has more to do with the patience of the Pohlad family than Gardy's brilliance. How many other owners would have allowed a manager to approach 100 losses in successive years without making a move? Not many, I suspect. Congratulations to a good guy, but I guess I'm much happier with the effectiveness of Gibson's changeup today than Gardy's 1000th.
