  1. Unless Duffey somehow developed a third pitch this offseason, we should shut the door on his starting career.
  2. Unless Duffey somehow developed a third pitch this offseason, we should shut the door on his starting career.
  3. This is beyond incredibly optimistic. For one, Duffey likely is done starting. Santiago's peripherals have always been worse than his ERA. And Hughes may never be fully healthy. We should revisit this in a year. also we should note Ervin reverting would be a negative vs last year.
  4. This is it for me. Our starters had an ERA over 5 last year. And Ervin was in the mid 3's and likely isn't apart of the next good rotation. So Romero is a piece. We can throw out other names and hope pick 1-1 is a stud. But we lost some of the lottery tickets this week. The rotation is still a long ways off.
  5. Danny Santana has had 500 AB over the last two years. Roughly one full season worth. He has a negative WAR of 3.5. He has been negative both offensively and defensively both years. So I am not following why we should be factoring in his lack of options and be worried about some other team picking him up. Wouldn't losing a negative player and another team picking him up be two good things?
  6. The hardest spots to fill defensively are CF and SS. At CF eligibles are Buxton, Rosario, Kepler, and Escobar. SS you have Polanco, Escobar. Dozier in a pinch. Wouldn't it make sense to have a guy that can hit on the bench over Santana?
  7. I think it is fair to be concerned that we are making this decision for the wrong reason. Expediting him to the big leagues this year. Replacing Glen Perkins, capitulating to a players wants, etc are not sound reasons. I guess this, the May news, and potential issues with Gonsalves is not good for the future rotation. I could add that picking up the option on Santiago kind of defeated the purpose of adding Meyer to the deal last year. I get that the new front office didn't make that trade or draft Jay. It is just a lot to take in. I can only speak for myself, but these decisions and the projection of Danny Santana breaking camp is not exactly the stark contrast I was hoping to see with two new external hires in the front office.
  8. I will say if Danny Santana breaks camp with the team it is a strike against the new front office. This in conjunction to the IMO short sided move of moving Jay to the pen (especially after you lose May) and my optimism is fading fast. Their is simply no reason for it. NONE.
  9. They need to draft their own guys in order to develop them? Someone call me in 5 years....
  10. In my eyes, the front office loses a little credibility from the stand point that they were supposed to excel at developing pitching talent. If they don't think they can turn a lefty with a plus fastball and slider, with a four pitch mix into a frontline starter than who can they turn into one?
  11. He has gotten hurt, but is a neck injury one that would be caused by him starting vs relieving? I am not an expert but I doubt it. A 3.10 ERA with a k per inning in his first year as a starter, seems like a decent transition.
  12. When Jay gets to the majors should not be a strong factor. This is a 59 win team that added Jason Castro. 2018 should not matter at all. He had 84 innings last year. 30 percent more for two years gives him over 140 in 2018. We could easily have him be the long man for 1-2 months in 2018 and end the season in the rotation. I am more concerned about the lefty with two good pitches the future rotation lost.
  13. I think you are seeing frustration. This team will either right the ship or not based on starting pitching and this week we lost May for 2 years and Jay is moving to the pen. And it looks their could be some concern about Gonsalves shoulder. The bigger issue for me is the process. I want good logical decisions by the front office. If they are passing on a potential good starter in 2018 for a good reliever next year when we arent playing for much, it is a concern for me.
  14. If La Velle's recent article is accurate this move was made primarily to get him to the majors quicker. Prioritizing the 2017 bullpen over the 2018 rotation is a huge mistake in my opinion. We could have had 6 Andrew Millers last year and not sniffed the playoffs. Likely the same this year too.
  16. I would want to understand why. I see three reasons: They wanted him up quicker They don't think he will ever be healthy as a starter They think he would either be a good closer or a 4-5 starter (a more dominant reliever than starter). If they made this decision so he could be up soon I think it is really foolish. We aren't a good reliever away from contention. The other two, I guess I don't know if we have enough information to make this decision and I am not sure if we had to make this decision yet. In my novice opinion, a 3.10 ERA with a k per inning seems like a decent first year transition to starting. And a neck injury doesn't seem like one you would get starting vs relieving.
  17. I start Buxton at 9 until he has sustained success. Even in Dozier's great season last year, Mauer was on base 2 percent more. So Mauer leads off and hopefully some of Dozier's HR have guys on base. Facing a lefty, we can probably find a better lead off hitter than Mauer unless his numbers revert towards career numbers vs LHP
  18. It seems like framing is measured two ways. Percent of pitches in the zone called for strikes. I get that can be considered getting the pitcher the strike he threw. But the other measurement is percentage of pitches out of the zone called for strikes. If he is really good at it, maybe we should stop talking about it? I am not sure umps get too excited that a guy keeps tricking them.
  19. Sano will not flop. His combo of power and ability to walk is too much for a flop. Adam Dunn on the low end.
  20. Correct Die Hard. Poor word choice on my end. It was Antony who made the trade. I was trying to point out that the trade and decision to tender were made by different people.
  21. I realize this was a move by the old regime, but trading Alex Meyer seemed like it sort of made sense if we were going to non-tender Santiago. Effectively selling him for $8 million. After bringing him back this doesn't really seem like it makes sense. I would rather have Meyer and the 5-10 percent chance he becomes a good starter or 25 percent chance he becomes a good reliever than Santiago or Nolasco.
  22. So the question is should we roll out an 800 plus OPS guy against lefties or a 710 OPS guy? Easy answer. The question is, will the Twins sit a guy they are paying $23m? I hope the new regime doesn't factor in contract. This will be a good litmus test.
  23. If he hits, we will find a spot for him. I get it. But these are pretty important things. When all the guys you thought could stick at SS end up at 3B, and guys like Sano move from 3B to RF or DH, and Kiriloff or Kepler from RF to 1B your offense gets watered down.
  24. A lot of good points on this thread. I am just glad this era is over.
  25. I give the starter route all year. We aren't an Andrew Miller away from relevance this year.
