  1. I agree. Give Hicks another shot out of spring training. If he fails as a starter, move to your 4th OF with occassional platoon oportunities. Or just outright platoon LF. I would definitely platoon him over cut him. He has proved to be a .750 OPS guy against lefties. He has to provide at least average defense in a corner, which would be a huge win for us.
  2. Put him in center if he hits 50 HR and has an OPS of 1.100
  3. I totally agree he has been misjudged and I think projecting Hicks as a 4th OF until he proves otherwise is fine. A starter is priority #1 for me though.
  4. He hit .250, .350 OBP, and a .650 OPS in September. It was a step up from .184/322./546 earlier in the year. That doesn't scream starting LF....but I don't expect him to have a .750-800 OPS overnight.
  5. No extra base hits yet, but seeing Buxton hit about .300 is very encouraging.
  6. I also think we changed our approach and made it a point to sign/draft power pitchers.
  7. In 22 games, after an .871 OPS in 42 at AA.....yes. He was in double A as a 22 year old and more than held his own. His issue is proving he is an MLB player and I think he needs to do it up here. He had a little momentum at the end of last year.
  8. I don't think he has much more to prove in the minors. 2012 - .844 OPS in AA 2013 - He was in the big leagues all but 22 games, at the tail end of a disasterous season and had a .650 OPS 2014 - After being sent down, he had an OPS of .871 in AA and .740 in AAA.
  9. I completely agree about putting him somewhere defensively. I hope that a new manager takes a look at him and gives him a shot at SS. He could be a real asset to this team at SS, even if his offensive number fall from .319 to .280-.290.
  10. Hicks OPS of .606 is in line with Shafer's .621 and Mastro's .564. I woud rather see Hicks in this role with some AB's here or there than a journeyman. At least Hicks has a shot at playing his way to a starting role. Agree with the assessment that a 4th OF is a floor. He could platoon out there as well. Although I hope he can prove to be more.
  11. The cardinals offered him $210M over ten years. If my memory serves me correctly, they were also offering a potential ownership stake (albeit a small one) and various statues around Busch Stadium. They were pulling out all of the stops and wanted him back. They got extremely lucky.
  12. Your initial quote made it sound like they built a veteran team from outside the organization, and then supplmented those guys with in-house talent. "So, the best way to emulate the Cardinals is by building a competitive, veteran MLB team, and then incorporating your farm system as players prove they are ready, carving out roles for them, and not depending on them to succeed right away" Over the last four seasons, they have probably had 120-140 guys contribute and you listed about 8-10 guys they brought in. To me, it seems like they built a team in-house and supplemented those guys with FA acqusitions and trades. The fact that they added in-house talent over time I believe is a function of them being a good team and having more talent, in which case it is hard for a team like the Twins to emulate. It is tough to say to the Twins, to be a better team, you need to build a better team. It is kind of like defining a word with the word. It doesn't really help anyone.
  13. We got Nishi, so I am guesing your analysis had us top 5 in Asia as well.
  14. The Marlins for sure need to throw more in.
  15. BTW, this franchise did offer Pujols 10 years and $220M. Which would have been a terrible deal from the day it was signed. They really got lucky.
  16. I agree. This Cardinals thing is funny, like a new WWJD
  17. I think Hicks right now is in the range of many of the 4th OF's we have had. OPS-wise. He should be able to play all 3 OF positions with a few reps and provide now at least an average bat against lefties.. An .800 OPS is a bit of a high standard. A league average corner OF is not that high.
  18. It seemed like the Cuban guys were referenced a lot more and the only Asian player up until a few posts ago was Chen.
  19. Based on his manager, he has been tardy a few times and is never among the first there. He also showed up one day without knowing who the starting pitcher was for the other team.
  20. He can't be counted on to be an every day player until he earns it. That includes preparation as well as results. I do think that his floor is a 4th OF/platoon at any of the OF spots against lefties (career .750 OPS). Unless we make a splash in free agency, I would rather see him up here than in AAA. He has been back down 3 times now.
  21. My prediction would be patient now.
  22. Here is why I think it is the same thing. Ortiz was OK here and never healthy. We cut him. Nobody gave the guy any money. The team that did sign him had him on their bench for 3-4 months. Then he turned into a hall of fame player. People sit here and act like Terry Ryan had four aces with a king kicker and he folded the hand. Just bringing up his name invokes disgust for Terry Ryan 12 years later. You guys are ripping Terry for not signing Cuban outfielders. One turned out to be an all star where the high bidder paid him only an AAV of $11M. Clearly 29 GM's mis-judged the value of this guy. The White Sox in a sense mis-judged him as well. They would have offered more if they knew just how good he was going to be in a blind bid scenario. The Puig signing was ridiculed around the league at the time. Scouts and GM's were wondering what the Dodgers were smoking. Again, 29 GM's missed this. Cespedes, it is not really clear to me that $9M a year is a good contract for him. Translation, Terry deserves as much heat as 28 other GM's for "missing out" on two players and this line of attack is 99% hindsight. It doesn't strike me as an organizational flaw we need to focus on, nor are these players going to help our pitching staff out.
  23. Would you have wanted us to drop $170M on Tanaka last summer? At the time? Scouts were all over the board but nobody credible thought he was in the same ballpark as Darvish. At the time it looked like ace money for a #2 starter.
  24. This thread reminds me of the meme that the Twins were dumb for letting David Ortiz go. When 29 teams make a mistake on a guy, I am not going to sit here and act like this is some huge organizational deficiency. You can if you want, you and Mike seem happy to do so.
  25. Completely agree. Look up James Simons. A quant hedge fund manager that has had a legendary run for many years. He is a billionaire and the lengths he goes through with his employees and technology to keep his secrets proprietary are legendary. It really makes no sense to do a bunch of work and then give it way to people because you want a good interview.
