  1. Last year, Cruz was the only guy to have 40 HR in baseball. In 2000, 16 different players had 40 or more. Including Richard Hidaldgo, David Justice, and our very own Tony Bautista. Three of the last four years, nobody in the NL hit 40. As it relates to Mauer, his OPS + was 107 last year and it was a terrible year for him. So that speaks to how good he has been. He may never hit even 20 HR in a season, but he does not need a huge bounce back to be even an above average 1B. An OPS return to .825 would have made him the 8th best hitting 1B in baseball last year. http://espn.go.com/mlb/history/leaders/_/breakdown/season/year/2000/sort/homeRuns http://www.baseball-almanac.com/hitting/hihr5.shtml http://mlb.mlb.com/stats/sortable.jsp#sectionType=sp&sortColumn=ops&season=2014&league_code='MLB'&statType=hitting&game_type='R'&elem=%5Bobject+Object%5D&tab_level=child&click_text=Sortable+Player+hitting&season_type=ANY&page=1&ts=1418307151121&position='3'
  2. I look out 3-4 years and don't really see a payroll issue, where the Twins have to let anyone leave. Ervin would push the Twins to a payroll of $105M or so. Next offseason we lose Hunter and Pelfrey. We probably trade Plouffe as well. That a total of $20M. That is more than enough to extend Dozier and Hughes on top of their current salaries and the Twins could probably go up to $115-$120M on payroll anyway. Ervin would be our second best pitcher on a team that desperately needs better pitching. I am all for it
  3. Because we gave Joe Mauer $180M!!!!!!!!!!!!
  4. Jim Bowden Alan Nero -one of Ervin Santana's agents along with Jay Alou denies they are close to deal w/Santana but Nero acknowledges offer from Twins
  5. Weird that a New York guy broke it.....we may not be any closer than top four like La Velle reported. Twitter initially had 4-60, then "number not confirmed", then it switched from signed to "pushing to sign"
  6. Twitter has him at 4-60 for us
  7. I don't like the 4th year. I would offer the guy 3 and $14M a year. A team option at $15M with a $4M buyout. He is gauranteed at 3-46. A much better deal than Ricky's 4-49. He improves our staff and team, gives us talent, innings, etc. And he is off the books when our talented 4-5 guys hit arbitration.
  8. ESPN's running blog has Ervin meeting with the Giants. I could see them being slightly more attractive. San Fran, defending champs, large market, NL, etc. The he likes the cold thing is probably a ploy anyway to drive up the price. http://espn.go.com/mlb/notebook/_/page/wintermeetings2014/mlb-winter-meetings-2014
  9. If Anderson somehow pitched 200 IP with a 3.00, he would be on the first train out of here. Ervin on a 3 year deal will help this team transition and hopefully win when the young guys come up. And I don't think we get a ton for him at the deadline, given the injuries. He has been good before but teams would predict an injury at any given point. Best case you get a pick when he leaves. I guess my fear with him and other inconsistent guys is that we do a one year deal and get married to them like we did Pelfrey. I don't think giving Anderson a 2-3 year extension after a one year deal is a positive thing for us.
  10. Neither had pitched in AAA yet. May pitched well and received 10 starts by year end. I too think Meyer should have received 10-15 starts, but the Twins didn't want him up. I think because they either wanted another year of control or because they wanted to get him through a year healthy on a pitch count of about 80. Hopefully this year is different, but Ervin should not block either guy.
  11. Ideally one of May or Meyer are in the rotation and the other the pen on April 1. By June 1, a rotation spot will have opened up and at that point they would have 10-15 appearences. Then they both are in the rotation for the rest of the year.
  12. Beradino has us interested in Volquez as well and he is apparently looking for a 2 year deal for $20M. He had a great year last year, but the last time he was good was 2008. I think that goofy delivery is the culprit behind why he has been so erratic. I don't like that one. http://www.twincities.com/twins/ci_27101196/gm-meetings-liriano-out-santana-becomes-twins-likeliest
  13. Case and point. The 2012 Atlanta Braves. 24 year old Mike Minor 4.12 ERA 25 year old Tommy Hanson 4.48 ERA 22 year old Randall Delgado 4.37 ERA 25 year old Brandon Beachy 2.00 ERA (ERA + of 200) And they eased 26 year old Medlen in, first in the pen than the rotation. He had a 1.57 ERA (ERA+ of 256) They were all set for the next 5-10 years.
  14. I would rather wait until we have five pitchers with a sub 4.00 ERA. Right now we have one, just barely as far as career numbers go.
  15. Completely agree with the second part. Ervin is the lowest I would go...
  16. That was hilarious.
  17. Yup. The cream always rises to the top.
  18. Who knows. I think he may not keep a ton of teams waiting and hold out for the extra year. Especially since being the last one standing in the game of musical chairs last year. You still have Shields and Max S. Then you have about 6-7 guys on one year deals that could be traded for. Then another set of intriguing guys on 1 year deals. Masterson, Anderson, and McCarthy....
  19. I would guess he gets 14M a year over 3 years. Last year he was telling everyone 5-80 or 5-90 and they all hung up the phone and moved on. Had he been more realistic I think he would have gotten a decent deal.
  20. Not at all. My logic is we were bottom 3 in pitching and need talent. Ervin provides that. I would like to see Nolasco, Hughes, Ervin, Gibson, and Meyer in the rotation on April 1 and May in the pen. You could flip May and Meyer and I would not really care. Throughout the season, someone will need to go back to AAA or get hurt and it will work itself out.
  21. All good points. I agree Nolasco and Hughes won't pitch themselves out. That was more for the other guys. Any of them could get hurt though. Nolasco's arm could go too given his injuries.
  22. May has walked 4.4 batters per 9 in the minors and 4.3 per 9 in the majors. It is unclear to me how he projects as a 6-7 IP guy per start next year, especially since averaging 4 and change last year for the Twins. He has a career 5 IP and change average in the minors and he had a bulk of those innings between ages 21-24, repeating the same league twice.
  23. Here are May's starts for the Twins last year: 2 IP, 2.1 IP, 4.2 IP, 5.1 IP, 4.2 IP, 5 IP, 5 IP, 6 IP, 4.2 IP, and 6 IP. The BB's have been an issue in the past for him as well. If May and Meyer were in the rotation, having a guy like Santana could prevent an additional bullpen guy and add flexibility to the bench.
  24. I actually completely agree with you about the philosophy. However Ervin was the lowest guy on my list that qualifies as go big for me. Sounds like he does not qualify for you. He is not an ace, although he has squeeked in a few years that look like it. The other thing is, May for the Twins and Meyer at AAA struggled to get past the 5 IP mark last year. Meyer was on a pitch count but he went 3-4 IP quite a bit. Having a durable guy has other benefits as well, on top of the talent upgrade.
  25. The flip side is I think reserving 60% of your rotation for rookies or 2nd year players will leave these very boards antsy/dissapointed. They won't all turn out and most will struggle for at least a year. This same conversation in 2008 would have set aside 60% of the rotation for Baker, Blackburn, and Slowey. Maybe they weren't rated as high as Meyer or Berrios.....but you get the point.
