  1. While there was a big discrepancy in home-road HR splits in 2010, it shrunk considerably in 2011. In 2010 the Twins hit 52 HR at home and 90 away while the pitchers surrendered 64 at home and 91 on the road. The totals were 116 homers at Target Field and 181 away. (65 fewer HR at Target Field -35.1%) In 2011 the Twins hit 46 at home and 57 away and surrendered in 80 at home and 81 on the road. The totals were 126 homers at Target Field and 138 away. (12 fewer HR -8.7%) While the change in the HRs hit by Twins batters could somehow reflect a different approach at the plate, the change in HRs surrendered by the Twins pitchers would be harder to explain. It simply appears that Target Field played much bigger in 2010 than in 2011. It will be interesting to see the totals in 2012.
  2. The best alliteration in a Twins headline is still the Tribune's tongue-twisty "Twins Trip Tribe Twice." Solid effort by Seth, though.
  3. And on the other side of the coin for the Twins - Jason Bulger pitches one third of an inning vs. the Red Sox, walks 4 and then gives up a grand slam. Ouch.
  4. Maybe the Target Field PA crew will hold onto Kevin Slowey's "Slow Ride" music in case Rodriguez makes an appearance.
  5. Gutierrez has shown statistically to be an Anthony Slama who gets hit more. They both strike out a lot of batters and walk too many, but Slama's hits surrendered are much fewer with the same collection of AAA defenders playing behind them. Gutierrez is three years younger but Slama's been an arguably decent and consistent pitcher statistically over the last 3 years at Rochester. If Slama is not 40-man material, (And I wouldn't argue that he is) Gutierrez doesn't strike me as more valuable unless he can cut his walks by 70% or surrender fewer hits at an MLB level than he has at AA and AAA. A couple of questions... How much does Gutierrez being a Twins number 1 pick weigh into this? (Slama was a 39th round pick. Edit - I didn't even know there WERE that many rounds) Does anybody have informaton on FB/GB rates for Gutierrez? (I presume him to be more of a FB pitcher.)
  6. Saw this on Mpls/St. Paul Biz Journal: According to the North County Times he will be the pregame and postgame host on the Padres' broadcasts.
  7. If the Twins are factoring Gutierrez into their plans, they're being goofy. Based on a indicative amount of mediocre innings at the AA and AA level, the only thing spring training should tell the Twins about him is to confirm that it's time to free up his 40-man roster spot. For that reason, the Thursday outing should be considered a good thing for the club because it makes the picture clearer.
  8. I would suggest that the robust opponent's batting average on balls in play versus the Twins last season was not so much a factor of where the balls happened to fall as much as an indictment of who was attempting to field them - especially in the corner outfield spots. LF has been upgraded (no matter who the Twins put out there) but RF looks to be manned by a large slow person again this year again - albeit a different large slow person. Carroll should be more consistent at SS than the Twins options last year, but at 38, he's the closest Twin on the roster chronologically to rascal scooter ownership.
  9. I found a Japanese sporting website talking about Tsuyoshi Nishioka's offseason workout regimen in Japan. Unfortunately it was in Japanese. Bing's fine web-page translation is below: "Repeated dash Sprint and training strengthen the trunk, Japan ham, Nakata infielder sho Osaka toIn high Juniors Spivak. "Wow power ( US baseball ). 2010'S, took the leading hitter of the PA League ). Focus on progress (like a year), wants to forge a lower body "and vigorously digested the menu. Based on the experience of the first year was too eager, Nishioka was "maybe too flew last year. Increased tone in open warfare. Stout and more, and actively want to continue playing "and stressed. (Joint)" Saw another article on that site talking about the breakup of his marriage to model Naoko Tokuzawa . It appears he arranged for a hook-up with another model around spring training time last season while his wife was five months pregnant. Guessing the family drama may have factored into his crappy season, too. At least now with a divorce pending we know where most of that $9 million contract will end up. One note on translations - Nishioka knows there's no spot on the team for a "Futility Infielder," right?
  10. What about the throwback uniforms the Twins wore at home for most of last season after Harmon Killebrew passed? Based on the results, those things must be the ultimate in bad luck - surpassing even the sleeveless uniforms they used to wear when Liriano pitched.
  11. In an earlier interview on the MLB network, Justin talked about "retraining" the brain after the injury. They showed him doing motion-tracking eye exercises and balance drills which didn't fill me with a lot of confidence about his ability to judge a 92 mph pitch in a fifth of a second and then react like a pre-concussed Morneau.
  12. I would add fishnet stockings to the list - although they excite me most other years, as well. If we're limiting it to just Twins-related things, I'm excited about having a real play-by-play guy doing the radio broadcasts this year.
  13. To have a chance at 81 wins in 2012, the Twins have to improve their run differential by 200 runs. (They scored 619 last year and allowed 804) I'm interested in your opinions on how many runs you think the various player changes and returns to health can account for. I'll start by saying that I think having Ben Revere in left field instead of Delmon Young accounts for 10 fewer runs allowed simply based on the number of additional fly balls that Revere will get to. I think it will be more than that but am accounting for some of the exta bases Young's arm may have limited that Revere's will not. 190 runs to go...
  14. Justifying the $3 million salary issue somewhat (if Nishioka goes down to AAA) would be the savings from not having to repair any more Pavano dugout damage wrought by Nishi's butchery in the field.
  15. The Twins signed former Astros catcher J.R. Towles - a career .187 hitter at the major league level - and invited him to spring training as a non-roster invitee. What I find interesting is that the team gave him uniform number 5 and not something in the 60s, 70s, or 80s. Read into that what you will.
