  1. Even though the game today was Messy with a capital M, it is so nice to see the Twins WIN two series in a row. I know it's only one week in, but I still love it! GO TWINS!
  2. Just read all the posts...wow...deep...kinda scary for those of us who skew towards pollyannishness (kinda want that to be my new nickname). I think Patrick R. is a curmudgeon. Kinda like a baseball Andy Rooney. He wrote some great pieces back in the glory days about Hrbek, Puckett, Gaetti, and others, and a columnist should get people talking and he certainly has done that today. I just want some pitching. I want guys who can go seven innings, who can get our guys off defense in a timely fashion, who know how to pitch to major league hitters. I don't care where or how much, but if we don't have some quality starting pitching this year we will be doomed to repeat the awfulness that was the last two years. I loved being in a division race....I want to feel that again.
  3. NONE of the Twins pitchers pitched deep into games....some didn't make it past inning 3....I looked for stats to back this up, but couldn't., only found that the average start in MLB was 5.98 innings per start...someone more tech savvy than myself probably can find the Twins pitchers stats on this...I just know that I was extremely frustrated last year with the # of innings that our bullpen had to pitch because the starters couldn't hang in there. I also remember what the projected staff was SUPPOSED to be last year at this time, and what it ended up to be, were TWO COMPLETELY DIFFERENT THINGS. It's early, lots of stuff can and will happen, but I like Cole's attitude and I wish him the BEST!! Good luck!
  4. The fact that Joe rebounded from his disastrous 2011 season so well didn't surprise me. I think it did shut up a number of Mauer bashers. He is getting older, but also wiser, and he knows how much time he can spend behind the plate and maintain his excellence as a hitter. Too bad the Twins had no foresight when they traded Ramos for Capps. It doesn't take a genius to know that a 6'5" catcher can't squat forever. But, I think he will continue to dominate at the plate, and win another batting title this year. I look forward to watching him hit, and hope by some miracle that this weird mix of pitchers that TR has assembled will do better than last year's patchwork mess.
  5. I'm so thankful that my father introduced me to the great game of baseball at Met Stadium in 1961 and fostered my love affair with the MN Twins for all these years. I am thankful that he lived long enough for me to take him to a game at our beautiful new ball park in 2010. I am thankful that we can begin each new spring season with optimism. I am thankful that Terry Ryan is diligently looking for pitchers to help restore our beloved Twins back to respectability.
  6. Robbie was hard to dislike, but his interviewing skills seemed a little on the frantic side...I'm hoping for more Marney and less Laudner.
  7. I like him. I like his hustle and ability to play multiple positions. Great utility guy.
  8. There is a great slide show on espn's site (under rookie hazing) showing MLB rookies in tutus and leotards and more....and it shows many of the backpacks that rookie pitchers carry. Quite entertaining.
  9. Thanks for the link to this article. A great read. I met him once at spring training. He talked to everyone, old, young, handicapped. Patient, accomodating, polite...class act. I am so pleased that he has rebounded this season and silenced the many doubters. I wish him many more years of success!
  10. He'll be back in the Twins starting rotation next season based on a good showing in spring training and a complete lack of depth in pitching. I hope I'm wrong.
  11. I looked at the schedule today. I'm thinking of a road trip to Washington June 7-9. I've never seen the National's park. I have a cousin in the DC area. Great time to revisit the monuments, too.
  12. I am ambivalent about this topic. He can't really be blamed for what the young players are lacking when they get to the big leagues. He can't really be blamed for the horrendous pitching staff. But, we do have some really good players. They just rarely all seem to be able to put it together in the same game. Is that Gardy's fault? I'm not there day in and day out. So, I'm unsure....One thing I am sure of is that it absolutely sucks to be in last place. If hiring a new manager will bring us a respectable team again, then do it.
  13. Tonight my son called and said, "Mom, you're still watching the Twins?" I replied, "Yes, I ALWAYS watch the Twins. I'm a Twin's fan." But, with no Joe it will be even harder to watch. I miss the days when people bitched about losing three straight in the playoffs to the Yankees.
  14. I was hoping a new venue might help him get his act together...guess not.
  15. Morneau is one of the most popular players on the Twins team. It is remarkable that he has come back from all the injuries to produce again and be an exciting player. Good for him. I thought he was done... I will be okay with a trade ONLY if we can get a quality pitcher for him. If he has to go, I hope he gets traded to a winning team AND wins another MVP award. That's how much I like him.
  16. I was there on an extremely HOT day (Aug. 15) and there were lots of empty seats. I sat in the Legend's club for the first time. GREAT place to enjoy the game. We ate inside in the air conditioning. The seats were wider and padded. Food and beverage could be ordered from your seat. The bathrooms were super CLEAN and not crowded. Looking at the memorabilia in the display cases was awesome! I was a little underwhelmed by the food choices. The Twins had two hits in seven innings and then we left. My son gave me a free ticket for Sec. 107, row 10, a few weeks later, the seats were up from and just past first base. The seats faced into the outfield. It was the worst seat I've had in the stadium. I had to crank my entire body around to get a look at home plate, and in those narrow seats that is not an easy task. That was my biggest complaint about the Metrodome, how so few seats were angled to home plate. Yes, I realize that it was built for football, but thought this had been corrected at TF. I've been to about 20 games in the past three years at TF. I've been very pleased with the stadium, the parking, the seats--until that seat in Sec. 107. The removal of the beautiful trees was a mistake, but I'm still enamored with the field, the outdoor baseball atmosphere, and I have to drive 2 hrs. and 30 min. to get there. However, after two HORRIBLE seasons, the Twins need to show all fans, not just season ticket holders, that they are going to make some moves to put a more competitive team on the field. If they don't, the numbers will continue to dwindle.
  17. I've never really blamed Gardy for the mess, but I think it is time for him to go. He'll be 55 this fall. He's made okay money, doesn't live high on the hog, and could just retire. Maybe that is just wishful thinking.
  18. What I want to know is has there ever been another MLB team to completely turn over their entire pitching staff by mid-Aug.? I feel bad for Duensing. He will do whatever is asked of him, but we all know he needs to be in the pen. I say bring them all up and let them throw. Shut Diamond down. See if anyone can emerge as a possibility for '13...but, the Pohlads need to open up the checkbook and let Terry Ryan find us some proven and competent pitchers. Someone in another thread used this word the other day--suckitude. Brilliant word. Twins Territory is tired of the suckitude.
  19. He had been a workhorse for us in the past, so I don't think he's coasting. I think he's hurt, and older, and probably done.
  20. I've been telling people that the Twins are more watchable this year than last....but this past week I've changed my mind about that. Last year people were blaming Mauer and Morneau....this year the pitching staff....somebody needs to sort out this mess.
  21. If this past week is any indication, I'll say they will win two games a week for the next six weeks, so 62.
  22. Should have found a way to keep Torii--he had the spark and leadership that these guys are missing.
  23. I love Justin, and am thrilled that he seems to be finally free of concussion symptoms. I was one of many who thought that would never happen. I want him to succeed whether it is in MN or elsewhere. Is he worth $14 mil, probably not. If we could get a decent pitcher for him, then I am okay with a trade. My question is where does Joe Mauer fit into the first base puzzle. He seems to be playing more first base this year, and I know he is doing less catching than in the past. His knee issues are only going to get worse as he ages and would not be surprised if in the not too distant future he becomes our everyday first baseman. Parmelee seemed to be the real deal last Sept., but this year he has become a question mark. Like many other question marks on this team.
  24. THANK YOU, Terry Ryan, for signing the Hammer for three years!! Great move.
  25. After reading all five pages of these comments, I don't really know what I want to say...but, I'll just say that I am a die hard Twins fan (since '61) and I really enjoy reading all the comments that are posted. I will never be as smart as most posters about WAR and stat stuff, but I do watch almost every game, and form my opinions based on what I see. I see a team that is much more watchable lately. I used to squirm whenever a fly ball went in Delmon's direction, now with the Hammer, I still squirm, but not quite as much. Hammer is an exciting player most of the time. Mauer is back, Morneau's not dizzy, Revere (wow) is doing it all, Diamond has been a revelation, Lexi is still being Lexi, Dozier I haven't figured out yet, Plouffe (jury still out)....won't mention Nishi. I did not expect Baker and Pavano to go completely down and out, and thought Liriano would be better than he was and that Hendriks would contribute. I did not see the total hot mess that has become our starting pitching staff coming as spring training began. We need at least one (preferably two) decent starters--where and how we get them I don't really care. Open up the vault, trade, whatever...Oh, I have a stuffed Build-A-Bear that wears a Twin's uniform named Joe Torii. He went into hibernation early last summer when the season tanked. Not as cute as your dogs, but still cute.
