  1. I agree we don't know Mauer toughness, but it seems we have less faith in the reporting of someone who has access to the athletes than a national reporter who probably has never stepped into the Twins locker room. It looks like most people are informed by want they want to believe and considering another view is not an option.
  2. HomeSportsTwins/MLB Twins: Mauer might have to learn how to pace himself Article by: LA VELLE E. NEAL III , Star Tribune Updated: June 7, 2007 - 11:54 PM "I think some people take pain in different ways," Twins center fielder Torii Hunter said. "Some people have to play at 100 percent, and Joe may be one of those guys. I've seen it happen. Joe is a good player, and he wants to perform at 100 percent, not at 80 percent. Here's Hunter's comments from 2007.
  3. Probably like everyone else on this site, I don't have knowledge of Mauers injurys, so you have to listen to people who are closer to the situation. I would think Souhan & Reusse are closer to the clubhouse and would have better information on the culture. I'm not hearing any teammates jumping out and defending Mauer toughness. The only time I remember anyone talking about was Torii Hunter, who basically agreed with Souhan & Reusse. All that being said, Mauer just need to go out and play 150 games and drive in 100 runs. It's really up to him to show he can still produce.
  4. I'm sure there are qualified people in the organization, but I really hope they fill the coaching staff with outside personnel. I couple holdovers would be okay, but they need to bring in some new prospective instead of just current staff and former players.
  5. I like the Moliter hiring, but I hope they get some coaches from outside the organization. If they just start promoting the AAA Manager and other coaches, then I think this is a lost opportunity. Then it truely is a country club environment.
  6. I think anyway you keep Meyers in the majors is a positive step. He'll start the season being 25 year old, more time in AAA isn't going to prove anything, He needs to show something in the majors so the team can start planning a direction with their pitching staff.
  7. The Twins have not begun to see what their top prospects can do. Seems a little early to trade top prospects for a position player. We scored run this year so that was not the problem. This sounds like "I just want them to do something" and spending money just to spend without improving the team. How does this make the Twins better than Miami was last year? Why would he sign a long term contract with a losing team? Doubt this was his dream
  8. The Twins are not just one players away from contending. No reason to trade a bunch of top prospects for an all star player at this point. They need to bring up some players and see what they have, Sano maybe just a young Stanton. With Stanton, we'll be no better than Miami is with Stanton. Probably worst, since Miami has better young pitching.
  9. Wish my boss agreed, but I don't have a guaranteed contract. Too bad for the Twins and fans if that is the case.
  10. Isn't cloning the best player from a 4 time 90 loss team like cloning the best athlete at Fat Camp?
  11. Danny Santana was brought up at the same age as Hicks and Santana never had great years in the minors. Age isn't the question, talent and attitude is more important . You sometimes need to put players in situations where they can grow. The Twins are no longer in a position where they can keep telling people to wait.
  12. I agree with Seth also, this has to be the year we start seeing the rebuilding with prospects, not left over major league talent. I also think that we need to go that route with the pitching. Hughes was a big hit, but no top pitcher is going to sign with a 4 time 90 loss team. We'll have misses as we bring up the young players, but we might also get the big surprise. Once you can show some positive in the team play, you will be able to get the top FA's next year.
  13. The Twins need to stop trying to quick fix the staff and give the young player a chance. We have 4th oldest pitching staff in the AL. We keep acting like we a just a couple players away from contending, only probable is Trout and Kershaw are not available. Four 90 loss season and the only rebuilding is done by accident. If they hadn't screw up the CF position so badly, we never would have seen Santana get 400 AB's. Time to let the young players play and then see what you need. There are no quick fixes to the mess they have created.
  14. Man - talk about wanting to get this nightmare over, he would rather pass on half million rather than pitching 1/3 inning. I've been to Detroit, it's not that bad.
  15. If Gardy doesn't use him for an out this weekend it's just part of the continue combination of stupidity and stubbornness of this coaching staff. How does the manager look you in the eyes and says - "I just don't see how I can get you that 1/3 of an inning for your bonus." It's just got to make you want to give that extra effort for this coaching staff.
  16. I can't see any reason why a top starter would sign with the Twins. Why sign with a team that has lost 90 games 4 years in a row? KC found that out and had to overpay for a pitcher in a trade. Last year, the Twins said they offered contract to Santana and Garza but were turned down. Lester going to get $20 million from a playoff contender, how much would the Twins need to offer. I hope they finally commit to a youth movement and see what the young pitchers can do. We traded two NL top 10 batting averages players for Mays and Meyers, isn't time to see what they can do?
  17. Great analysis - one of the most important aspect of Moneyball was making sure you had three (Zito, Hudson and Mulder) Cy Young contender in your starting rotation. In 2003, Oakland dropped from 7th in OBP to 21st and still won 96 games.
  18. Some people see the hitter with a .360 average with bases empty last year and some people see the .240 hitter with RISP with 2 times the strike out ratio. The RISP and strike out ratio continue this year, so it hard to justify it as just a slump. It's two sides of a coin, but you have look at both sides. And when you are the most important hitter in the lineup, people are going to hold you to a higher standard.
  19. I think people's position about Mauer get locked in and they have a hard time looking at the player he is today. He was a great player his first 5 years, with 3 battling titles and an MVP. Expectation were set on those standards and he was rewarded with a $23 million per year contract. But he has not been the same player he was prior to the contract. He was a good player who was injury prone, but not a great player. HIs lifetime average on RISP is ,320, but in 2011 he hit .239 and is hitting .230 this year. You can look at him either by his career average or what you see today. He appears like a player on the decline and we just need to accept realize that.
  20. The stat that takes his WAR times a dollar amount to come up with his value is really a poor stat. The WAR rankings value catcher more than any other position so if you use an average salary rate, you really overprice the salary of catchers. For example, in 2013 the total WAR for first base was 52.8 and the total for catchers was 77.1. If you use an average salary rate, catchers would be paid 46% more than first baseman. But in reality, it's just the opposite.
