I have no evidence to support it but I think when hes got no one on he is trying to pull the ball (and failing because he has zero loft or backspin when he pulls the ball) and then he goes back to his old Mauer ways when there are guys on. The walks are seem indicative of pitchers coming after him a lot more, yet he isn't able to translate seeing more strikes into driving more strikes. Is it because he is over pursuing them in an attempt to pull the ball to fit the stereotypical 1B profile? If anything his current line shows the success of Dozier/ Hunter getting on in front of him and that he can drive in runs without traditional power numbers, however they are also inflated from having 6 rbis in 2 abs. I want the old Mauer back, slash liners to the opposite field and back up the middle, stay patient, and play to your strengths instead of pursuing your weaknesses.
