  1. An injured pitcher like Pryor with terrible control probably doesn't have people clamoring for his services. I just kind of shrug at this move. I'm glad they paid a couple million to see what happens and I'm fine they don't have to pay off the rest of his contract.
  2. Kubel and Bartlett sell zero tickets. I guess one could play Danny Santana in Bartlett's role (Yet this probably isn't good for Santana in the long-run.) The youth movement is not being held back by Jason Kubel over Chris Parmelee. These guys are the equivalent of Correria or Pelfrey types placeholders till better players come around. This is why I don't get to worked up about their presence.
  3. The development of guys like Arcia, Hicks, Pinto, Gibson, and Meyer will have way more to do with the Twins won/loss record than Jason Bartlett or Kubel. While I'm not a fan of really having either around, they should ulitmately determine very little regarding Ron Gardenhire's job status.
  4. I have to say that I have no problems with these moves. 1. I'm a bit confused by the Presley thing. Yet a guy like Presley should be fairly easily attainable in the future. If the Twins had Mastro rather then Presley would people really care. The Bartlett obsession is odd, but perhaps Gardy sees some value in the clubhouse that I wouldn't be able to measure. Bartlett on a 70 Win Team for a year is nothing to lose sleep over. 2. Parmelee's projections for a player with his skillset are brutal. He's a below average hitter with limited defensive value. 3. Diamond probably projects as a long-reliever type. They choose Deduno instead who has a better arm. This says nothing about Duensing being a better bullpen option. I support these moves
  5. Mauer is the better player. I loved Kirby! I was at Cooperstown for his HOF INduction and at the Metrodome for his funeral. The arguments for Mauer are objective where as the arguments for Puckett are subjective. 1. Puckett was tougher- Puckett also wasn't a Catcher. 2. Puckett was a better leader- This might be true (I've never been in the Twins Clubhouse), yet you do have to wonder how much this narrative shifts if not for Kent Hrbek's Grand-Slam in 87 or the Lonnie Smith baserunning gaffe in 1991. 3. Puckett has more power- This is also true, but it ignores that Mauer has a 45 point edge in OBP. The ratio of value is something like 1.8 points of slugging percentage are equal to 1 point of OBP. 4. Mauer's Contract- Complaining about this is the height of foolishness. People are complaining about the Twins resigning a A. Hometown Kid B. Three Time Batting Champ C. Player with a Hall of Fame Trajectory. If people honestly believe Joe Mauer shouldn't be resigned considering these factors, they probably should just as well of supported the contraction of the Franchise. Mackey's writing is such that he seems to view the Pro-Puckett arguments as ulitmately weak, but doesn't want to have to defend Mauer too hard.
  6. You're right. It's not that Correia has zero value. He perhaps gets you a moderate upside Low A. It's just I don't really see the fascination with trading a albeit limited starting pitcher with one year on a cheap contract to sign a similar type pitcher.
  7. Let's assume good health for Sano (with the shoulder). I then took a look at Jonah Keri's Trade Value chart. This chart would be specific for the Twins. I probably wouldn't trade Sano for David Price just because of where the Twins would be on the Win Curve. Players whose value would seem to be similar -Matt Moore-TB -Jurickson Profar-Tex -Xander Boegarts- Bos -Kyle Seager- Sea -Shelby Miller-Sea Sano's the best power-hitting prospect in the Minors and power tends to seems to be a valued skill as evidenced by the Trumbo trade. Just for the record- Buxton's value would seem to be similar to Will Myers or Yasiel Puig. This is how high Buxton's value would seem to be.
  8. Perhaps I'm being a blind opitmism on the Twins. But if you sign Drew to a three year deal (2014,2015,2016). When you consider that by Opening Day 2015 the following players will be on the roster (Buxton, Sano, Meyer, and Rosario). This says nothing about potential development from Gibson, Arcia, and Hicks. I'm not even mentioning that the Tigers are probably more likely to decline rather then ascend by 2015. Why should we dismiss that Drew on a three year deal could possibly see us in contention with breaks during two of those years.
  9. If Arroyo is worth $36 Million Dollars, this assumes 6 WAR over the next three years, and I don't like that bet.
  10. What convinces people that Bronson Arroyo will be at 37 years old in the American League? Steamer and Oliver project him to have a WAR of less then 1. I'll freely admit that there is something that I must be missing. Perhaps the Twins have scouted Arroyo to be better then the numbers look like in the case of Correia, I'm just not confident.
  11. A move like this is fine in theory. This is one thing that Oakland does well is fill out the fringes of their roster. Perhaps it's part of a bigger problem that such players should be attainable for league minimum on a forty-man roster.
  12. He's heading to Detroit according to Doogie, so time to move on.
  13. I wouldn't give Arroyo- Three Years. Such a contract seems like a disaster waiting to happen. Arroyo has averaged less then 1 WAR a year for the last three years. He'll also be entering into his age 37. I agree with Keith Law's take that I wouldn't go more then a year. Pelfrey for 2 is more interesting (I actually believe Pelfrey has slightly more upside. Pelfrey has better Steamer and Oliver projections heading into 2014. For the record- I'm not in love with Pelfrey resigning (Part of this is his games tend to be unwatchable). I would rather pursue a Brett Anderson who at least has Top of the Rotation upside.
  14. Thanks for your thoughts Goulik. I need to order a Handbook.
  15. Apologies if this came off in such a fashion.
  16. The Pohlad's and Terry Ryan are probably quivering.
  17. The more I've thought about this. What I would like to see happen is A. Gardenhire be hired away by another team. B. The Twins choose a new manager. I wouldn't be all that upset about keeping Gardenhire. His track record up through 2009- speaks well about his ability as a manager. He should also be given credit for keeping the Clubhouse together in the midst of three straight bad seasons. I'm wondering if many of his most vocal detractors were making the same claims of TK needing to go before 2001. The reality for Gardenhire is he just didn't have the talent, the last few years. Seriously look at the starting rotation and the average September line-up. Guys like Maddon or Francona couldn't win with the Twins current roster. Gardy will get hired elsewhere and probably do a good job. I just feel that overtime a new perspective in any organization is worthwhile. In my line of work the saying goes that after 5-7 years, people stop listening. While I'm not going to blame Gardy for losing games with guys like Eric Fryer. I do wonder about things like Hicks' and Gibson's development at the Big-League Level. I realize it's simplistic to blame just the manager for this. Yet with the new wave of talent coming soon, a change could be beneficial for both parties.
  18. Rosario and Berrios seems low for Price. Perhaps Rosario and Meyer/Gibson gets the Rays to at least consider it. The Twins then would probably need to do a 5 Year Deal in the Neighborhood of 100 Million to make a Price deal worthwhile.
  19. What's up to par mean? Pelfrey and Correia have given about 3 WAR for the Cost of $10 Million Dollars. I doubt the signings were ever made with the assumption that either would compete for CY Young Awards. If you're mad that Ryan didn't acquire a Front-Line Starter. This is a totally different discussion.
  20. Ryan is of course correct. Unless one happens to think that Team Defense has no impact on a pitcher's outcome. Which would lead one to believe that Bruce Chen has been a better pitcher this year then Justin Verlander.
  21. You complained that the Twins wouldn't invest in Star players in Free Agency. I merely wanted to hear who they should have signed. I used the example of the Top Free Agents from 2012 to make the point. The reality of Baseball's revenue structure is that the players that make in to Free Agency are beginning their decline phrase in most cases. I never claimed that you advocated for any of these players. This was merely to make a point about the general risks involved with Free Agency.
  22. You're mad the Twins didn't bid on Josh Hamilton or Albert Pujols? We needed a CF perhaps BJ Upton. People on here were clamoring for Dan Haren. Would giving a 5 Year Contract to Nick Swisher or Micheal Bourn have been a good investment? Is Ryan Dempster any better in 2013 then Correria or Pelfrey? The only contract that seems to have worked out real well that the Twins could have pursued in Sanchez? You think a team coming off a 66 Win Season should be investing in 80 Plus Million Dollar Contracts for Pitchers. Were the Twins wrong for not making such a big investment in Johan? Free Agency should compliment the roster. The Twins approach in Free Agency has been fine. If the Twins have an 80 Win Team after next year then sit on money then I'll complain along with you. I just don't see the point at the present time.
  23. The Twins traded Prospects for Capps, Pavano. Ryan traded prospects for Luis Castillo. The Twins signed Willingham with money set aside for Cuddyer. The Cardinals signed Beltran with money set aside for Pujols. The Twins signed Orlando Hudson when they had a need at Second Base. People don't seem to get that teams needed to have different roster philosophies depending on their timeline to compete.
  24. 1. I'm guessing you'd be happy with the Twins having spent 25 Million More only to lose 88 Games? The Twins payroll was sufficient in 2009-2010. The Twins realized they were in a rebuild so Payroll went down. 2. The key to rebuilding is player development not spending like drunken sailors in Free Agency. I wonder if your tact would be different if you were an Angels fan rather then a Twins Fan. The key to next winning Twins team are Sano, Buxton, Arcia, Meyer, Rosario and others. This is how the Cardinals win. Free Agency should be about complementing holes when teams are close. The 2013 Twins aren't close.
  25. The problem is the Fan Base is only excited when it's reflected in the on-field product. If this year's Twins team spent 25 Million Dollars more then won 76 games, you would still have plenty of September apathy.
