I'm not saying Plouffe can't move laterally I'm saying last season there were many times that I seen a hard hit ball in Trevor's vicinity and it would get by him because he's standing flat footed and straight up and down. Obviously the guy was a SS and he has the ability to move laterally but is more or less being lazy on defense.
Anyone who draws high praise from Chili Davis is OK in my book. Count me a Tevor Plouffe supporter. Plouffe and Willingham were the most exciting combo in baseball for about a month last season. If Trevor hadn't have hurt his thumb the Twins would have likely had two guys with over 30 HR's last season. I'm hoping that this season the Twins have 3 guys(Morneau being the third) with over 30 HR's. That would make the terrible pitching easier to stomach. ..Wouldn't it? All that being said the guy was a statue at 3rd base last season and I don't expect him to be better this season.
"I just wonder if the 40 man roster issue will bite him to start the season."--What's going to be biting Deduno through the first 2 months of the season is the 15 million the Twins have committed to a couple of stiffs. After those 2 get set packing back to the senior circuit, where their marginal skills play better, Deduno will get his chance......AGAIN. I'm predicting that once he get's that chance no matter how good his results it still won't be good enough to make the collective MLB brain trust to think he's anything more than a career minor league player. It's so ingrained in these coaches that a pitcher MUST be able to locate his fastball that they may never see past that. That is my opinion of the "enigma" that is Deduno. Personally it's hard for me to look past the erratic fastball but if my other choices were Pelfrey, Correia, and Hendriks I'd look real hard.
The thing that separates Deduno and DeVries is that they both have an above average curve. Both of them have a legit out pitch in their curve. Hendriks just like Blackburn and Slowey before him has NO OUT PITCH and will always give up more than a hit per inning at the big league level even if he has totally dominated the minor leagues. Same for the prized additions of Pelfrey and Correia. Yuck.
Couple things, I have and always will think Mauer should bat 2nd. Worley has looked awful so far this spring. Hope it's just him easing his way in after the off season surgery. I like that you want Escobar over Florimon though. I think the Twins should start Deduno in game #1 of the regular season but I know that isn't going to happen. Of all the candidates to make the rotation Deduno is the only one other than DeVries that is experiencing real success this spring. If you really think about it though who else on the Twins staff has the stuff to go head to head with Verlander? I Vote Deduno for Opening Day Starter!
If they had just pooled the moneys spent on Correia and Pelfrey, or as I call them the Corr-frey combo, on one decent starter like McCarthy, Dempster, Jackson, Marcum ect. just think how much more positive the general vibe around the Twins would be.
If Diamond started the season on the DL I'd go with Walters over Hendriks as the 6th starter in same said fantasy world in which the Twins didn't waste their money on Pelfrey and Correia.
In my fantasy world the Twins rotation would be Diamond, Worley, Deduno, DeVries, and Hernandez. Those free agent "additions" are going to hurt more than help. Look for another terrible start to the season for the Twins courtesy of the free agent "additions".
"Deduno and Walters are not on the 40 man roster which reduces their chance of being on the Opening Day roster, but if they pitch well in Rochester, they will get another opportunity."--especially because we can expect about as much success out of Correia and Pelfrey as the Twins hot in the past from similar pitchers named Marquis, Ortiz, Ponson ect.
Deduno is far more compelling than Correia and Pelfrey. The Twins really sold the fans, the veteran players and Gardy down the stinking river with this rubbish.
I have never understood their reluctance to move the left field fence in to save themselves the trouble of everyone complaining and saying Mauer isn't worth his contract. They move fence in 15 ft or so in left center. BOOM Mauer hits 20+ HR's every year and no one can say he isn't a legit superstar.
I mean I want to be optimistic but the way I see it the rotation has no chance of being even close to league average without Gibson or Harden. Now I know that those 2 could still help the team later in the year even if they won't make the team out of ST but I have to believe that the rotation as it now appears to be shaping up for the start of the season will be every bit as bad if not worse than the 2012 rotation. Even if Diamond makes it for opening day the rotation is just shameful.
Some people think it's better this year because the Twins have got some new names in the rotation. Everyone knows how the season went last year for Liriano, Baker and Pavano but I'd take those 3 over Correia, Pelfrey, and Worley.
Diamond isn't any overly talented pitcher in terms of raw attributes. That being said if you have great control of all your pitches and good stamina you don't need the most velocity or movement to have a high level of success.
Pedro Hernandez finished last season on the disabled list didn't he? Is he healthy now? How well has he pitched this spring? I don't think I've read a single thing about him.
Mauer shouldn't catch at all. I know that he want's to. I know that's what they him signed to be. I just think if they want him to still be productive offensively in the later years of his contract it behooves them to keep his knees healthy. He's over 30 and guaranteed 23 million a year for another 5 years. Do you really want him to catch a 120 games?
78.5 is way to tough to call for this team. I wouldn't touch this bet. I will say this that the Royals will be better than the Twins but I can't predict by how much.
OK obviously I didn't think that last post through but my point was that there's no way Mauer is an overall 93. I will go as far as saying I think it's more likely that DeVries performs like an 81 in the coming season then it is Mauer performs like a 93. Other than contact what attribute could you honestly rate Mauer at 90 or above at this stage of his career?
You guys are talking about DeVries being over-rated but I think Mauer is far more over-rated. Of course the country that gave us Ichiro over values singles hitters.
