  1. Puck, you and I are done. You made your points. Boy, was I ever off base.
  2. First, you're allowed to believe what you want to believe about Carl Pohlad. I couldn't care less, but I think your depiction is bizzarrely extreme, to say the least. And you had to be reminded that perhaps there's more to his story, didn't you? And yes. I DID address the funding issue. I didn't support it then and worked to fire my legislators because of it. What part of this is confusing to you?
  3. Spitting out a couple facts while ignoring the full body of work? That's essentially a mild form of dishonesty.
  4. I won't, because I'm 100% in agreement with you on this point. Some, probably including the Pohlad Companies, might say, "Hey, it's business. Strike the best bargain you can." I would have told them to pack their bags. But to turn around, Nick, and paint a picture of mean old Carl, grinning from ear to ear as he kicks old ladies out of their double-wide? C'mon.
  5. nicksaviking, making Carl Pohlad sound like Ebeneezer Scrooge unredeemed is so damned easy. Also unfair. Now, it's possible you have absolutely NO idea of the many many charitable contributions he's made. It's also possible you ignore it, because it would interfere with your agenda. So, pick your poison. Are you ignorant, or just uncharitable? And Puck, isn't it possible to defend fair treatment of all stripes, even if it includes a wealthy owner of a baseball team? I haven't asked you to stop criticizing anyone, including the living Pohlads. I'm just challenging you to spit out a fact on occasion.
  6. Oh, and I was one who, despite my love affair for the Twins since Pedro Ramos, wanted ZERO public subsidy. I was just as willing to give Carl Pohlad the finger as Winston thinks Carl was willing to give the fans. Here's my question for those of you who are so morally outraged at the mere thought of a public subsidy that benefits a private enterprise: can you name me one additional example of this that gets your dander up? That's what I thought.
  7. Carl is dead, Winston. Let's judge Jim Pohlad on HIS merits.
  8. They spent all their international allottment, and all but perhaps a few hundred thousand of their draft allottment. They spent more on the draft and international markets than the next highest spender by a factor greater than 10%. They signed the #7 and #22 ranked international prospects, and then shelled out another $500k for a third prospect.
  9. No, no, mike. It's my bad. You see, you made a positive comment about the Wilfs in a Twins blog. And you see, I mistakenly interpreted it as an attempt to contrast the Wilfs to Pohlads, thereby painting the Pohlads in a negative light. But now that you tell me that you only intended to be positive about the Wilfs, well that's different and I apologize for misinterpreting your point. But even IF you had intended to draw a negative comparison, I sure wouldn't have a problem with you expressing a negative opinion. However, I would have drawn an analogy, like I did, to point out what I think is a typical fallacy in the viewpoint of some, that fallacy being that the Vikes owner is generous and the Twins owner is a scoundrel. And the playoff reference? Just an extension of the comparison
  10. I just drew a positive analogy, mike. Nothing negative about that.
  11. I love the Pohlads. They bought the team from Calvin. They put up a ton of money for the stadium, They spent their entire draft and international allottments. And now that the stadium revenue is in place and the strategy of building from within is about to pay huge dividends, as evidenced by their fabulous pipeline of prospects, they'll have the budget to get over the top. so not everyone hates sports' owners.... But hey, Mr. Wilf. It's meaningless to just get to the playoffs, you know. You have to aspire for more than mediocrity.
  12. Like Reusse, Chief, and quite a few of you, I'm a 50-year fan. These categories don't fit me and my friends. Over the decades, I've been dissappointed and disagreed with many decisions, and sometimes I'm even proven wrong. Like about 90% of the time. I like hearing criticism from knowledgable and passionate fans. My only complaint is against commenters who hide behing their anonymity and take personal pot-shots at people who are not able to defend themselves. The "victims" of those personal insults tend to be wealthy and in the public eye, but that doesn't make them fair game. I'm a Reusse fan. He's got heart. And I love it that he's taking a shot at the behavior of constantly negative, mean-spirited know-it-alls.
  13. That dang Chief thinks he has ALL the answers.
  14. Phew. I thought jokin and thrylos were the only ones predicting that.
  15. It's been reported they signed Mauricio Silva, a pitcher ranked #22. Minier was ranked #7. Don't recall the $$.
  16. This quickly has become a favorite jokism for me: the Twins just don't understand sabre-reality.
  17. Who? Us? Of course not.
  18. Another nice list, especially when you consider the names excluded from a top 15, some that would have (or did) make our top 10 list two springs earlier: Benson,Goodrum, Boyd, Chargois, Vargas, Melotakis, Michael, Tonkin, Wimmers. My gut tells me our top 25 list would stack up as maybe the best in baseball.
  19. While stealing home is an exciting and memorable play, its value is pretty inconsequential in terms of wins. I mean, Carew maybe added an extra 15 runs scored over his career. And as others have alluded, very few ballplayers have the combination of quickness, speed, aggressiveness, judgment, and instincts to be greenlighted like HOF's Carew or Molitor were to steal any base at any time, including home. So, the thought that Liddle or Ullger or Vavra even enter into it as a variable is completely laughable.
  20. Exactly what have you seen, top gun? Once again, aren't some of you perhaps reading more into a fairly innocuous comment from Duensing in response to a line of questioning? Exactly what indecision are any of you talking about? Isn't it possible (and entirely reasonable) that the thinking is that Duensing's a bullpen arm unless we have another incredible run of injuries? Exactly how would that be poor leadership?
  21. Among our current top ten: My boom pick (exceeding even our own lofty expectations: Aaron Hicks Four who will live up to or slightly exceed expectations: Buxton, Gibson, Berrios, and Kepler Four who will slightly dissappoint: May, Arcia, Benson, Rosario Bust pick: Sano Caveat: subject to change later tonight, and authored by a guy who knows pretty much close to nothing about baseball talent evaluation.
  22. I believe what I wrote is accurate, Seth. Ryan specifically mentioned the number of ABs as a factor in why Rosario didn't receive more top prospect consideration, and he used the word "serviceable" to describe Rosario's 2B play. I'm not sure how your version differs from mine, other than you've stated it better, without all the misspellings.
  23. no need to get defensive, mnfanife. I think most commenters have been rather carefu not to trash you. We like your optimism! But you might want to take note that an overwhelming number of us believe you to be wildly optimistic about Rosario, and people have supported their views quite well, don't you think? But here's some further reason for optimism: Mackey interviewed Terry Ryan thyis afternoon. Ryan said he though the (main) reason Rosario wasn't a top 100 guy was because he only had about 50 AB's last year, so he didn't have "the numbers". He then talked about Rosario's transition, how he's had some time with Carew this spring, and how the field staff already considers his 2B play to be "serviceable". Ryan certainly left the impression that he's likely to stay at 2B, which would be huge.
  24. Your first sentence is a bit harsh, twinstalker. Can you accept the point being made? Which is, people with a lot better eye for these things than you or I believe we have at least a handful of viable MI candidates in the pipeline now. The Twins are obviously still high on Dozier, and it's fair to be skeptical of this confidence in the wake of Casilla, Nishioka, and the like. But we're starting to hear raves about Rosario. Danny Santana and Jorge Polanco too. And you might be hearing good things said this summer about Amaurys Minier, Levi Michael, and Niko Goodrum. So there, twinstalker, that's six guys to maybe keep and eye on. Or if you want, you can just take nothing else anyone says about these prospects seriously, right?
