    I don't HAVE an opinion about it. I'm not qualified to have one, but I still doubt, big time, that the Orioles would pass on an opportunity to trade Gausman straight up or Buxton. I think that decision would take about two seconds, given the reports we're starting to see from the scouting world on Buxton.

    Yep. The Twins only care about money. That's why they're going against the expert advice from some of you to call up Gibson. It's all about money. And poor Benson, holding his head in his hands in anguish while the Twins do absolutely nothing to "help him help himself". Geez, they're not only cheap, but heartless too.

    Again, Bill Smith didn't decide to spend more, and Bill Smith didn't decide to invest more heavily in the international market. Many people were involved in these decisions. Prior to his short stint as GM, Bill Smith eaded up the group responsible for building up the organization's capacity internationally.

    Oh, and mike, averages are VERY meaningful. For example, the average cost of a certain heart treatment at Allina's Mpls. Heart Clinic is $58,000+. The identical procedure's cost at Park Nicollet is $22,000+. Or do you think these averages are "pretty useless", too?

    As for KLAW's and your opinion about not being able to ascertain whether a college player is good or not if they start in Elizabethton? What nonsense. The Twins know exactly what they have. They know how "good" a player is. And they know what it takes to develop their skills. Players with polish start at higher levels. I'll take the judgment of dozens of field people who see these guys every day over yours.

    Thanks for the laugh, MWLFan. But you know, these guys are right. The Twins don't know what they're doing. I mean, they trot out these college scrubs in Elizabethton, let them beat up on all these high schoolers, and they start to think they're good. Geez. Never mind the facts, which are: 1) The average age of the Twins prospects in the Appalachian League versus other teams has been virtually the same for years, and 2) our A level teams have an incredible combined record of 47-16. But they only THINK they're good. But this must be because they're still beating up on younger players, even though they're the same age.

    My hope, coming into the season, was modest: give me a team that's in most of the games it plays, and be somewhere in the rough vicinity of a .500 club. Also, give me a couple glimpses of the future. So far so good.

    They didn't promise you that they'd spend 52% yada yada each and every year on MLB payroll. They didn't say that, with the new stadium, they'd be able to be "competitive" each and every year. You're entitled to your own definition of "frugal", and I will grant you that you make a strong case. I wish they'd spend more too.

    Yes, perhaps you SHOULD be. But you're not. It's absolutely fair game to criticise the organization for not spending what you believe they "should". What annoys me is how far the pendulum swings, from "not spending enough" to "those evil, cheap SOB's".

    Chief, it wouldn't matter WHAT the allotment is, or whether they outspend the Tigers on farm systems. You will consider them to be "frugal" as long as two things are true: 1. their payroll number is lower than you believe you're entitled to have it be, and 2. you don't have full access to their P&L, which is something you also believe you're entitled to.

    Last year, the Twins signed the #7 and #22 ranked international prospects, Minier and Silva. They spent their entire considerable signing allottment. They signed the best pitching prospect in Australia, shelling out a half million. What more do you want? And, to CMath's point, why do you attribute so much weight to the GM's influence in drafting and Int. signings? They trust their people. All friggin' five dozen of them involved in scouting, drafting, and development! They don't even have full control over the budget. The GM just isn't nearly as influencial in these decisions as you must think. This organization isn't frugal. They just spend differently than many fans would like, avoiding FA bidding wars and stupid decisions ( with some exceptions of course). If they were so intent on pocketing all the revenue, they'd have a crappy farm system, like, say, Detroit's. Or Chicago's. In the last draft analysis I read, which was a Top 220 prospect list, the Twins had EIGHT prospects in the top 92. How many in this same range for Detroit and Chicago combined? ZERO. Not one! Think about that for a minute. Why is their system so much better than any of their Central Division rival's? It's because they CHOOSE to invest their resources there rather than in the FA market. And they spend lots, but spend it wisely. And they have an exceptional organization reporting up to the GM.

    Nice AB for Hicks, but I think his struggles will persist a bit throughout the season. Rondon goes back down to AAA Toledo, where he led the Mud Hens to a 7-20 record to start the season.
