Article: Twins Trade Doumit to Braves
halfchest replied to Parker Hageman's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Nice buy low, struggled with command and injuries this past year. Good get for a guy that is kind of redundant as a DH/bad defensive OF and not a part of the future. Would've liked to see him stick as our backup this year but really not concerned with that position on a likely non-contender. He was the Brave #5 prospect and a guy who dang near made it to the majors his first year in pro ball. He spent last year in AAA and had a bad year. I like the buy low move here. Let's go get -
I won't ever try to pass myself off as a scout but I was surprised watching Parmelee on defense this year. He looked like he got decent jumps and made some big plays. Now given due to his lack of speed his "big plays" would probably be routine for a lot of guys but at least he made them. Kubel had some years like that too where he was kinda lumbering but he made up for it by being good at the diving catch and positioning himself well to limit extra base hits. Same with Cuddyer too. I'm not sold on Parmelee but I'd like to see him get one more extended look this season.

Twins going too far this off-season?
halfchest replied to Trautmann13's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
I think the only worry and it's a small one is that we lose a guy like Worley, Diamond or Deduno for nothing. Especially when I question how much of a step up is a guy like Pelfrey or Correia? In the end though really not a big deal. If they show up in Spring training and those guys are looking good the Twins will find a spot for them or be able to trade them. I guess I was hoping if we signed a 3rd pitcher it would be Garza because he is a clear upgrade on any of those guys. The one I would most like to see get another extended look is Worley. He did it in Philly for multiple seasons and even with last seasons debacle he owns a 4.05 career ERA. That and he's only 25. Really like his chances to rebound and be a part of this rotation for the next few years.- 45 replies

I wonder if Montero has one more option year remaining? He was up full time in 2012. Might make him a nice guy to go after. Have him be on DH/Catcher rotation with Pinto in the future. I know he's not supposedly the greatest behind the plate but he's young and Mauer can mentor both of them possibly. He also has some 1B experience in the minors so he at least has a little bit of flexibility. All depends on the price, you're not getting him for free but I can't imagine it taking an insane piece to get him. They're looking for major league ready pieces I can only assume. Willingham and a 10-20 prospect like Harrison? Maybe throw in a bullpen piece that they could use to "win now" like Fien? MOAR CATCHERS!!!

What kind of trade value does Sano have
halfchest replied to mikecgrimes's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
probably true, just thinking of guys who won't likely be contributors in 2015 but could be top prospects in our system that might be worth trading for a surefire Ace to put us over the top. -
One of my favorite Twins/road trip memories was down in KC for a weekend series. We see Coomer walking into the stadium as we're driving by dropping off (drunk) friends to get in line for fountain seats and my buddy yells "COOMDOG YOU ARE AN ALLSTAR" he turns arounds, laughs and gives a salute. Made our day, gotta like a guy with a sense of humor. Happy for him moving up, hope he ends up back in Minnesota in a broadcast role of somesort in the future.

What kind of trade value does Sano have
halfchest replied to mikecgrimes's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Matt Harvey if he didn't get injured might be the kind of guy I would consider trading Sano for 1 for 1. Would the Mets do that? I doubt it. I could also see the Twins hanging up though. I think when you're talking guys on this level the risk of trading them is just too high. You win that trade you look awesome but you lose it and you might lose your job. I think that's why the Delmon for Garza trade was so crazy. Two very young highly rated prospects (not technically but each had like a year of service time only) rarely get traded for one another. I really can't think of who I would consider for Sano that would be realistic. If we were the 2006 Twins and could offer a guy like Sano for Price straight up, then yes I seriously consider it. Can you imagine 2006 johan with present day Price as a 1-2? Like so many other posts I've made and seen others make in regards to trading our prospects. It's just not quite the right time to make these trades. The Twins might be seriously considering dealing a guy like Kepler, Berrios, or Kohl Stewart in 2015 though for a piece that puts us over the edge. -
Article: Twins Looking for Another Pavano in Arroyo?
halfchest replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I really hope this rumor dies soon and he signs with someone else. We now have three midrotation arms in Nolasco, Hughes, and Corriea. All decent but none with considerable upside. If we sign anyone else it needs to be a top of the rotation type or no one at all. Would rather give some of our guys another shot. -
It really all comes down to timing. As many have said we're not getting Price for Meyer straight up that's ridiculous. do you raid the system for 3 of your top 6 prospects to get a guy for two years when your team already had holes all over? I don't think so, it's not the right timing. Now, if you could work out a deal where you get a reasonable extension then yes I say you go for it. I honestly wonder if due to price being two years away from FA a team could commit say 5/100 or 6/120 starting in 2014 to him. That would be hard and honestly kind of stupid for any pitcher to turn down. He's banking on two fully healthy years with similar performance to get a mammoth 200 million contract. Or he could go for a five year 100 and know he's going to hit free agency again at 32 and if he continues his success could still demand a huge contract. Not sure if the Rays have even explored this type of deal with him but I have to think if he got a 9 figure deal wafted in front of him he wouldn't take it. All this said, I dont' think the Twins are that interested due to the timing, their will be other guys on the table next year and the year after to go for. Give these young guys some time to develop before making a huge move to run for a championship.

Article: The Case For Brett Anderson
halfchest replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
As a continuance to my last post same thing goes for Pomeranz. If he comes out for the Rockies and looks like he as put it together first half all that hype from him being a top prospect comes right back and his value shoots up quick. However, if he has a bad first half he might not net much of anything in a trade. Neither guy has a long track record of MLB success and/or health to live on. Their futures depend a lot on this next season both for themselves and for their now new teams. -

halfchest replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Interesting, the most comparable guy we have to Pomeranz is probably Gibson in that they're once highly touted prospects who haven't quite figured it out. Pomeranz was probably more highly touted and has had a longer amount of time to fail at the big league level and he doesn't have Tommy John to blame for being set back like Gibson but yah. I wouldn't have been a fan of dealing Gibson mostly due to his value being low and I expect it to be much higher after 2013. Not because he's a surefire ace but I expect him to be solid at the Major League level and possibly a #2 type if he can put it all together. I'm curious what others think would have been a comparable trade for Brett. I bet Beane wanted a pitcher with some upside. Would he have gone for one of our guys from A ball or lower that has upside? then throw in another piece to complete it? I think Beane did well here, Pomeranz has a lot of potential and could be a steal. Same goes for Brett Anderson. It's all a gamble though. If Beane keeps him and he has a good injury free first half then he could probably get a nice group of prospects at the deadline. However, if he keeps him and he gets injured or pitches poorly, he's probably not worth much of anything at the deadline. I like this move for both teams. Wish the Twins could have gotten him but glad we didn't overpay either. Like I said There's a legitimate chance that Brett Anderson could be worth a pile of gold or a pile of **** come July. A lot rides on his early season performance/health. -
Maybe, but both their value is down, May due to just mediocre performance in AA and Rosario due to his suspension. I'm not sure if they'd get it done right now or not. I heard/read this somewhere. Arcia would make a lot of sense for them as he would replace Choo for them and save them money. If we could get Bailey straight up then I would do that. Obviously we need to sign an extension with Bailey which I don't know if it's possible due to strong rumors that he would like to test free agency. Would a 5/100 extension be enough to talk him out of it? Not sure, but I'd like us to explore that possibility. Gotta figure Arcia plus maybe a lower level out of the top 20 prospect could get it done.

Article: Rumor Mill Round-Up: 12/9
halfchest replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I hope any pitcher we get at this point is either a trade for a guy with upside like Brett Anderson or Hellickson whose value is low right now or a cheap reclamation project with upside. Even a big splash like a move for a guy like Homer Bailey (assuming extension included) would be pretty great. I'm just not interested in an innings eater and was ecstatic with the Nolasco and Hughes signing mostly due to it meaning we wouldn't be signing Arroyo. Too old and not worth it for this team. -
It's been said on this thread but I just want to agree . . . it's just not the right time for this move. Now in two years if Meyer's and Gibson develop into top or upper mid rotation arms and some of the offensive pieces fall into place for us it might make sense to make a similar move. Send Kohl Stewart and Berrios away for a current Ace. Who that might be? I have no idea but someone will be available, seems every year there is at least one guy nearing the end of his contract. Right now I'd be more content to try buy low on a guy like Hellickson that is under control for more years or could sign a more affordable extension and he'll be around when our top prospects start coming up.
-
I think if you're willing to deal big time prospects for a guy like that you do it when your team is close already and that move may put you over the top. Say in two years if we're back battling for the division every year then we consider trading a group of top prospects for a guy like Price. Seems like most years there is a guy like this on the trade block. Shields, Cliff Lee, Greinke, now Price. Just seems like there is generally a team with an Ace getting more expensive that they're willing to flip for top prospects.

Article: The Case For Brett Anderson
halfchest replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I couldn't give up anyone as valuable as Arcia for him. He has value I get that we're not getting him for peanuts but anyone young and under control for many years along with being major league ready is too much. I like Willingham as part of the deal for sure since he wont' be around when we start winning and could be a really nice middle of the order bat for them. That wouldn't be enough. I would offer a middle reliever that they might like as we have a glut of guys who did pretty good last year and might be helpful on a playoff team. Then I would look at our out of the top ten prospects. A young guy with upside that might intrigue them. Brett's got value due to his youth and performance but his health over the last three seasons drives that down. I've said it before if I were Beane I'd probably just keep him and hope he can have a healthy productive first half. Then either keep him cuz your team is in playoff contention or flip him for a lot more than he's worth right now. -

AT first I thought, stupid, yah right. Then I thought hmm, A's are in win now mode, Willingham wouldn't be enough alone but he could probably be part of the package. Plus that frees up the Twins a little more cash. Maybe we send Harrison, Willingham and some cash for him. I could definitely live with that. I don't know what their needs are as far as a power hitting DH/corner OF though. Any insight anyone? -

I like the guy just to clarify, just don't see him being worth a top prospect at this point. IMO if Billy Beane is smart about it he just holds onto him if someone doesn't overpay right now. If the guy puts up a solid first half then yes, I think his value could skyrocket due to youth and past. But I'm talking like a solid 10-15 starts with no injury worries and good numbers. I'd love if we could get him for pretty much anyone outside of our top 10 or 15. Remember our 11-20 is better than a number of other teams 1-10 so we could spare one guy to take a shot at this guy. Just don't way overpay for him with a top ten prospect. -

Are we wanting him to be a reliever? ok so he did pitch pretty well then over his 160 innings. Still that's a bad sign for a starter. Even if his number are great he's still a starter making only a third of his starts or less for three years in a row. Not exactly the kinda guy that should bring a haul in a trade. -

halfchest replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The key is four years ago, that's pretty much my point as to why he's not insanely valuable IMO. If I'm wrong and some team gives up a B level prospect plus two or three C levels I'll applaud and say I was wrong. But until then what sticks out to me is three years in a row of not pitching very much. 2nd question - If Matt Harvey has the same issues you describe and in three years has only thrown 160 innings over three years, then no I wouldn't give up a whole heckuva lot for him either. I said this in the other thread. If he were to stay with the A's and put together a solid first half 12-15 starts of around 3.5 ERA , FIP, xFIP, etc. then yes, his value suddenly jumps a ton and he's worth a package of multiple solid prospects with one of our top 10s as a headliner. Right now I just don't see it. I've been wrong before and I'll probably be wrong again. Is there any trades to compare this to? Probably not considering all the factors. I think most teams that have Brett Anderson or a similar player would keep him and hope he turns it around for them or builds trade value rather than selling low. The A's are a different animal though. -

It's not just the performance though either. It's the timing. Right now he's coming off his worst season and third year in a row of having injury issues. Being more realistic, lets say he starts the year off with the A's pitches 10-15 starts with no major injury concerns at around a 3.5 ERA with his usually solid K/BB and Groundball numbers then yes, he could bring a decent haul. When Harden was traded for that group of players he was having a lights out season and no big health concerns. Looked like he might finally be snapping out of his past injury issues and had the past to back up that this wasn't just a hot start. Harden's career ERA+ was 138 following the season he was traded in. probably a little lower at time of trade but still. He was much better in all ways than Brett and had shown a glimpse that he might be healthy again. Unfortunately for him and the Cubs it didn't last but still. Point is teams were mid-season trying to compete and this guy was looking like the Ace he had been in the past. Brett doesn't have that half season of health and good performance for everyone to look at and throw top prospects at in a trade. He's got three seasons where he's been mediocre as a whole and injury riddled to boot.- 109 replies

halfchest replied to nicksaviking's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
I agree with Phil, no I would not deal Arcia for him. We're not a team in contention. The only reason it makes sense to deal for Brett Anderson is if he's had relatively on the cheap. He's got two years left. We MIGHT be competing with the Tigers again in 2015 but that depends on a lot of prospects coming up and figuring it out quickly. So to give up a piece that should be a contributing regular and possible all star for the next 5-6 years doesn't make sense. I may be wrong and I'll own up but I just don't see Brett Anderson bringing in anything great right now. A reasonable deal would be a solid young reliever and then a prospect with good upside in the low minors.- 109 replies

Article: The Case For Brett Anderson
halfchest replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I don't see how any pitcher who's averaged just over 50 innings a year for 3 years can command that much in a trade. That and the fact his innings these last three years weren't that amazing. I'd love to get him but just don't see any team giving up multiple prospects for him. Now if they keep him and he has a hot first half and they trade him at the deadline then yes. But right now I just don't see any team giving up more than C level prospects for him. Maybe one B level and that's it, even that I just don't see any teams paying up that much for him with the injury history. -

Again, apples and oranges. Other than injury history these are not the same guys. If Brett Anderson can come in and pitch 77 innings of 2.34 ERA and strike out 11 per 9 IP then yes, the A's are going to get handsomely rewarded for being patient. Unfortunately Brett Anderson has never had an ERA below 2.8 and a career K/9 of 7.1. Really not the same guy.- 109 replies
