  1. Pitch-framing is only for pitchers with enough credibility to warrant it. The Twins' collection of flesh-covered iron-mikes pitch-framing is but a meaningless issue.
  2. A colossal mistake. The Twins need pitching.
  3. That 17 X 5 would be far better spent on Garza. The Twins have two fundamental needs: quality starting pitching and credibility about building a championship winner. Signing McCann would accomplish neither. Garza comes the closest of those player who could possibly be signed by the Twins this year. Some free agents--well, we need to face reality that "he" ain't comin' here.
  4. Could we convince the Cardinals to take Plouffe for some useful starting pitching?
  5. Show of hands please--how many will be comfortable with anyone other than Mauer catching for the Twins?
  6. If I may contribute to the projected '13 projection vs '12 actual discussion.... My take is that the Twins and those who believed that '13 would be better than actual, are using the "incremental improvement approach" rather than a "step change improvement approach". Ergo, acquire three pitchers that collectively will be slightly better than those they replaced for a cost of $X vs. spend $X for one pitcher who is projected to be significantly better than the guy replaced. Much depends on what final outcome is desired, or--what is the definition of success? The incremental approach contains less risk, but lower "upside". Two star pitchers with average support can power a team through the playoffs, but five slightly above average pitchers will most likely suffer the same fate as the Twins in the previous decade. So which is to be preferred?--one great season (WS) or a few short appearances in the playoffs?
  7. Early judgment? Yes. The Twins identified that they have significant concerns with respect to their rotation--but San Francisco has signed two starting pitchers so far. It appears SF got "in-front" of their "concerns" about their rotation. Detroit had "concerns" also. Apparently they prefer to return Cabrera to 1B and start a young guy who is better-suited for defense at 3B and reduce payroll (perhaps only temporarily) to permit the expenditure for an improved bullpen. They are "in-front" of their concerns. Texas also had concerns--apparently they believe they need more offense, and hope to get much of the improvement from Fielder--and maybe another player. Texas is "in-front" of their concerns. This should not be construed as a criticism of the Twins but rather, as the thread contends, "business as usual". The annual meetings, held in December, should be illuminating. If the Twins make an announcement on or before the Tuesday after these meetings (which I think would be December 10) then we can conclude that business has changed (for the Twins). But if there isn't an announcement of significance, well, I think we can conclude that things haven't changed. So, we wait--but just a bit--say until December 10, to see if "Things Haven't Changed in Twins Territory".
  8. It seems that spot is for a (and apparently the only) free agent to be signed. It won't be used on a Rule V castoff (er pickup).
  9. Is Johnson one of "the fixes" of the rotation promised? I hope not! There are "options" and legitimate options and I am not convinced Kris Johnson is a legitimate option for the rotation. Will the TD computer clock "fall back" an hour?
  10. Why is a ballplayer practicing medicine in the first place?
  11. I would target the highest priority pitcher first and foremost and defer signing a second choice--unless the Twins truly have budgeted for two quality starters.
  12. Not sure what his compensation means but Hudson pitched for Oakland and SF has won the Series twice in the previous four seasons, so it's reasonable to think they still have a "contending" team.
  13. Clubhouse leader: thunder without lightning.
  14. Negotiations for Garza will demonstrate just how serious the Twins are with respect to spending for starting pitching. Garza has many of the really desirable traits the Twins seek in pitching--especially health, age, and skills. No, Garza isn't a Cy Young caliber pitcher--but he is good enough to lead this bunch. If he demands five years--give it!--this is one of the cases where a five year contract (or longer) works to the Twins advantage. Garza is a pitcher whose function isn't to just ad wins in 2014, but to be a mainstay in the rotation providing quality and stability for years to come. Second best in negotiations--might just as well be last, winner takes all.
  15. A free-another catcher is a waste of money and roster. Play Pinto.
  16. "Put 2017 & 2018 at risk." The Twins deemed 2008 "a rebuilding year" and consider what might have happened had the Twins not slashed the payroll so much from 2007 and acquired a bit more talent. Are we fans expected to "just shell-out" for sub-standard talent because the GM is afraid he might jeopardize the team four years from now? Maybe he should acquire players who will actually be useful four years in the future rather than the detritus he has been signing?
  17. Money spent for a catcher = money wasted. It's not like Pinto has to bat .300, he simply has to hit as well as Plouffe and be "OK" at catcher. The need is pitchi put all of the free-agent money there. Signing multiple barrel scraping is worse than one or two of the best pitchers that can be had by the Twins. Catcher? Pinto, Hermann, Doumit and whoever is at Rochester are more than enough options. The need to is to challenge the next wave to see if they belong, not spend aimlessly on some washed-up veteran who would be replaced anyway. Play Pinto.
  18. This "angst" was inevitable. Even 1000 AB at AAA ball wouldn't eliminate the concern. I assume you mean Hicks-like results by Pinto rather than the Murcer following Mantle scenario. This happens every time a team decides to replace one player with a rookie. Ergo, consider the angst when the dynamic duo (trio?) are finally promoted to the Twins. There is so much riding on their success that the "angst" will be huge. Pinto doesn't have to hit as well as Mauer to be a success.
  19. The Twins' need for starting pitching will be for at least three years--it makes no sense to sign a guy for one-year so he can "re-build his reputation". Especially if said price is $10MM for one season.
  20. This answers the age-old question: "Who's on first?" Clearly, Mauer must be in the line-up, so he has to play someplace. Pinto's audition last year showed he has major-league ability. Now he just needs to show he can make the continuous adjustments to stay successful. It matters not what is Mauer's salary with respect to where he plays--the die is cast. This change also eliminates the wasting of money signing a veteran 1B-man so all FA dollars can (and should be) focused on starting pitching. As before, the executive committee will do their job and set guidelines for spending--hopefully all spending will be toward solving the starting pitching problem.
  21. Fortunately for posters Punto has better options than the Twins--and he will choose one of them.
  22. The correct price is zero. The need is starting pitching and the better the better! There are many internal options for DH including up-and-comers whose fielding isn't up to snuff, but their hitting is!
  23. Why would a player's agency ever publicly trash a team or it's front office? This is a PR puff-piece. That being, it doesn't mean the Twins (or it's people) aren't first-rate--the article means that this guy (Sosnick) understands the value of "sweet words" (which is a prerequisite for an agent).
  24. My view--he's doing just as the executive committee wants and is in no danger. Ninety-plus losses means draft early in Jun. I wish I had a dollar for every time I read about the "difficulty" of finding talent when selecting 20-something. This way, they select in the top ten, sometimes even top five! Losing ninety?--it's not as if the Twins would threaten Detroit soon anyway. Fans? We exist to buy tickets, concessions, and merchandise. Several poor seasons and most will be thrilled to be drilled in the first round of the playoffs.
  25. Besides the salary issue for a "quality" free agent, there is the tacit admission that "the system" failed and talent had to be "purchased". IMO, it's not the money as much as the admission of guilt.
