  1. Hendriks was the epitome of a "Twins Way" pitcher: pounded the strike zone, hardly walked anybody, got the ball "put in play" with few pitches--yet he failed at the major league level. Does this action (DFA) serve as an admission that the theory of pitching/pitcher development used for Hendriks is/will be replaced by a new theory? I guess only time will tell.
  2. I hope this thread doesn't blow-up like the one about Joe Benson! Seriously, the Twins have to cut bait on guys who don't succeed in the majors, there are just too many (and Oh how they have touted their MiLs) on their way up. Sometimes, throats have to be cut. I forgot about Kris Johnson--he will be extended opportunities to succeed at the ML level, quite likely right out of Spring Training. There just isn't any room for Hendriks--and I don't think there should be either!
  3. The International League is where to find SSs, too many Americans eat their way out of SS or don't hit as well as the Internationals. There appears to be several pitchers that project very high--it would be a mistake to pass on one given the market demand for starting pitching. My favorite is Aiken, a LH, HS player from around San Diego.
  4. Thank Goodness! The Twins didn't waste money, roster slot, or playing time on him! Happy for Saltalmacchia--but glad the Twins didn't go with him. Play Pinto! Experience in the ML is far more useful than Rochester. The FO can't boast about their MiL system and then be afraid to promote them to the Active Roster!
  5. It's like the Twins have agreed to participate in the Make a Wish Foundation.
  6. I think Plouffe "has a rabbi" in the Twins organization, and he will be extended every possibility to succeed. Sano being promoted to the Twins and sticking in 2014 is not cast in steel. Quite likely the Twins will keep Plouffe (unless they receive a handsome offer in a trade) as "Hicks insurance". My read of the tea leaves is that the Twins management believed they "got burned" by placing trust in their newly promoted players. promotions will be delayed and veterans will be retained to buttress every newly promoted player to the Active Roster.
  7. $14MM for Pelfrey?? Yikes!! I expect Garza's annual salary over the (expected) 4-6 year life-of-contract won't be much more than $14MM. Perhaps the Twins still think there is a decent chance to sign him. I fully expect that Pelfrey signs a contract (with some other team) for considerably less than $14MM.
  8. There should be no sacred cows among those who were at Rochester last year. If anything, the Twins hang on to these guys like them too long cycling them up and down because they were afraid to admit failure and find someone else.
  9. I think at least one of these guys are offered a two-year contract. Duensing is the most likely followed by Plouffe. I think it makes these guys easier to trade as well and that would be one of the motivations for a two-year deal.
  10. The opponents change their rosters too! I agree with Thrylos, we need to wait until Spring before making predictions.
  11. My crystal ball is completely clouded beyond 2015, but I am in favor of accelerating the advance of the top pitchers in the minors. If drafted at 18, a taste at 21-22, with the plan that at 23 in the rotation or washed-out (converted to RP, traded, or cut). College pitchers get two years or suffer the same fate.
  12. Shelling out $73MM?? Last season the payroll started at nearly $83MM for the entire season. It's not like the Twins are spending like the government.
  13. I never thought that much of Hughes. However, the Twins can't be overly choosy until this team gets retooled into a winner. The alternatives (those we watched the last two years) are unacceptable and new talent must be acquired. I would rather see Pinto as the #1 C instead of a free agent. Whatever he does at AAA is meaningless anyway--see Parmelee.
  14. The twins won't make the playoffs next year, so get the knot out of your shorts. This is a process, "and there are no shortcuts...".
  15. The Twins did make a statement with the Nolasco signing--and it is a positive statement. No, he won't turn the team into a .500 team (all by himself) but this is a start. Last season's rotation contained only one Major League pitcher (and a rather ordinary one at that). Three more are needed. No, I don't think all will be "on board" for 2014, but, this is a start.
  16. "There isn't any shortcut to get where we want to go." Thank Goodness, we are not following Jeffy anymore to get there. WTG Ryan!--But this is just a start, the Twins must continue on this path.
  17. One reason there are "too many" starting pitchers (mouthwash needed) is that these guys don't have a dominant pitch to be useful as a relief pitcher as a "fallback position". They are guys with "average stuff" that were elevated because they "attacked the strike zone" in the minor leagues and survived the cuts. Sadly, their major league experience wasn't productive enough or we would have engraved their name in the rotation for 2014.
  18. Nolasco by himself is worth 3; Pelfrey might add a fourth point if the bullpen is reduced to seven.
  19. Maybe, hopefully, Nolasco will permit the Twins to reduce the bullpen to seven pitchers and add a (much needed) position player to the Active Roster.
  20. A positive move! Dealing with the top priority of starting pitching first--and not being distracted by other positions--excellent. I am pleased, but my bar for being thrilled is much higher--and unrealistic. This is a start, but only a start, this process must continue.
  21. A better approach to using WAR is: Saltalmacchia WAR Pinto WAR plus added player(s) using that $10MM WAR Compare these values. Add an adjustment for the experience (improvement?) Pinto receives by playing for the Twins.
  22. He said that just before last season in a televised interview.
  23. The Twins will operate under a budget for 2014--and it won't be anywhere close to $100MM or 52% of revenue or whatever fantasy metric you choose. It won't be more than 2013 (DSP "...we're comfortable with $80-85MM..."), or quite likely less than that. Any dollar spent on a catcher (or any other position player) is money that won't be spent on the critical need of starting pitching. As for those who are concerned with Pinto and the issue of "unproven"? The Twins have been screaming about their #1 ranked MiL system all year. The intent is that these men will be promoted to the Twins and turn the team into consistent winners. All of these MiLers fall into the category of "unproven". So many have posted "...you can't build a team on all free agents...". Well, if you insist on only using "proven" players that's what you would have to do (free agents). Since most are in agreement that the next "winning Twins" team will be built on youth, these men are by definition "unproven". The only way to find the "successful" is to play them! Some will fail. To that I answer "Next". Summing up, NO to Saltalmacchia.
  24. It's really difficult to evaluate a deal when none of the terms are known.
  25. Your bar for "strength of position" is way too low. If anything, SS is a position of need. However, the need for starting pitching is so great that external additions at other positions serve as a distraction at this time.
