  1. That is encouraging! I do believe simba is at least a capable hitter, but just curious what Everetts ops+ was when we signed him? I imagine those last few years really brought down the average. edit: just looked up Everetts numbers and...wow. the last couple years were indeed terrible, but his season high ops+ was 80. and he never won a gold glove. granted, those aren't a good way to measure defenders, but I guess I remembered him as being "the guy" for ss defense at the time.
  2. Really like the signing, but can't help thinking of Adam Everett.
  3. I've found this take really interesting as well. I feel like the argument was, that in the playoffs, pitchers are better and therefore it's harder to string together multi hit innings, so relying on the long ball was more effective. Now we hear the opposite. The only constant seems to be the Twins failing at either approach.
  4. Agreed about it making sense to try this year, and I have been mostly ambivalent about the electronic strike zone until watching this season play out. Maybe it's just that I'm watching the games pretty much everyday this season, but the balls/strikes calls have been absolutely atrocious. It's actually made me less interested in watching just because its so inconsistent and really takes away from the game for me. Watching a guy get rung up on a ball a foot out of the zone, or taking first on a pitch down the middle is unacceptable, and seems to happen multiple times every game.
  5. All of that may be true, but "phasing out" a core veteran team member in the middle of a pennant race seems like an awful idea. I would like to see the prospects live though too. Wish they still expanded the rosters.
  6. Buxton is the bigger disappointment for sure. Sano hasn't become the best power hitter in baseball, but he's still a huge power threat and plays 1b just fine. Could be better but still plays most days. Buxton gets a lot of love from war, and no doubt his defense is crazy good and he's really fun to watch out there. But he never plays for more than a couple weeks at a time it seems, and those first what, 2-4 years were pretty terrible when he was on the field. I like him but can see him out of baseball in 5 years, while I see Sano having a normal length career for a lunking power hitter. edit to add: Buxton was also a #2 overall pick while Sano was a international signing. The value of the #2 pick compared to just a cash signing hurts his perceived value, as we expect our top 5 picks to be face of the franchise players. And if anything that's the often maligned rosario, not the guy (occasionally) playing next to him.
  7. I always thought guys weren't supposed to swing at 3-0 pitches because the pitcher was showing they can't throw strikes and to just take the free base. Is it really because you're supposed to take at least one strike in order to make it more fair or something? Thats the first I've ever heard that, and pretty sad that these professional competitors agree thats the norm. Should teams roll out the b squad lineup when their ace is on the mound as well?
  8. Yeah, me neither, but he was the guy throwing the ball, most important guy on the field. Idk i doubt he's still thinking about it, like we are. He was just pissed cause he competed and lost, and I hope all those guys feel that way. Especially whomever decided to employ that shift. But whatever, its early season baseball. We all "know" the game only count for half in april, thats why its so fun in september! And if this makes a fairly boring series between two middle pack teams have interest in april, then lets get worked up over a bunt.
  9. The one I really don't get is Dozier. Berrios was the pitcher, and maybe they really were challenging the hit ruling on his double last time up, so as dumb as it is he is going to take it more personally. Rosario, I'm guessing is more friendly with berrios being country mates, and both are young and whatever. Still dumb to be upset about it. But what is dozier on about? Being one of the vets on the twins, does he tell young guy, like rosario who did like the exact same thing, not to play to win? His quote was the most confusing.
  10. I don't know, is Stewart really much of a risk to get picked? I mean like last year our pitching went from terrible to not quite as terrible, and he was like 9,10,11...on the minor league depth chart. I doubt any team can look at him, potential and all, but look at that and see a place on a 25 man roster. I always thought they should try to work out more trades using the rule 5 though. And Im all for the wakefield contract, for everyone. $4m/yr mutual option forever? If all the money wouldn't just go to the owners, and they'd make tix and concessions dirt cheap. But if Mauer would be into it I think that would make sense for both him and the Twins.
  11. Good for him I guess, no sense to spend the end of your prime in AAA here when he can still be a star and more comfortable in his home country. But I have a real hard time believing the Twins would have signed a contract that said if you fizzle out and quit and go home we will still pay you. Actually quite the opposite. Wouldn't it be like a player retiring and voiding the remaining contract or whatever happens?
  12. Well, they got another "borderline" elite year from him, and (borderline?) made the playoffs, so that was cool.
