  1. Mauer was right around his career averages last year. I imagine he'll be about the same this year, maybe a touch better. And, while he was slightly below his career averages in BA/SLG% and OPS, he was over his career averages in OBP and OPS+. And, as usual, his numbers w/RISP were very, very good. I'd be very happy if he could do what he did last year every year for the rest of his career
  2. During the '05-'07 range, Santana averaged 5Ks to 1BB. That's FANTASTIC, especially for a high strikeout guy. Only one qualifying starting pitcher this year was better than 5:1, Cliff Lee. Verlander was less than 4:1. Your comment sounded like Santana's K/BB ratio wasn't that impressive. Santana's worst K/BB ratio during that 3 year range was '07 when he had 230+Ks and only 52BB in 233 innings...that got him the 4th best K/BB ratio in the majors that year after having the 2nd best K/BB ratio in the majors in 2005(Silva #1...with like 77 Ks) and 2006 (Schilling #1). I'm pretty sure that made Santana's ratio the best in the majors in that 3 year span for qualifying pitchers. Who was the best at that on our team during that three year span? It wasn't Silva. Now, with Santana averaging 5:1 for that three year span, the team had a K/BB ration of 2.77:1 in 2005, 3.27:1 in 2006, and 2.60:1 in 2007. His 5:1 wasn't a huge contributer to that team K/BB ratio?
  3. I'm not sure we're on the same page. Originally you said Maestro would be the CF with Benson or Hicks coming up later in the year. I asked who would be the other player who could play CF then, and by 'other' I meant other than Maestro. You said you think they'll get some worthless reject, and then I asked why not Benson out the gate because his clock is already started. I always understood you thought Maestro would be the starter, I'm just not sure why he would be if Benson got brought up. Either way, it'd make more sense if it was Benson and Maestro BOTH on the roster out the gate.
  4. and the reason for not bringing up Benson until late May/early June? As far as delaying Hicks' clock, I never figured HE would make the team out the gate, but they've done a good job of delaying the start of his clock already.
  5. well, if neither Benson (more likely) or Hicks (least likely) makes the team out of the gate, who is the other player that can man CF? And there is no advantage to waiting to bring Benson up...his clock has already started.
  6. or guys like Marcum...
  7. Ryan said after the draft that they drafted some 'power arms' because people had been harping on it for so long. It was like he was saying I don't agree, but I give in.
  8. It helped having that one guy...you know...the guy who should have won three Cy Youngs in a row for us.
  9. Are those the numbers you've heard thrown around for him?
  10. I don't see which youngsters you are talking about that we'd end up having to pay bigger money to that would hinder our spending now and up through the next 3, 4 years...
  11. Exactly...except I think we're only 14M under last years payroll and 32M under 2011 payroll
  12. Maybe he views success in a different way. Yes, they won 4 division titles in his 9 seasons with them, but they got bounced in the first round in 3 of those 4. They especially should have gone further in 2006 and when they fell short, the team did nothing to get the team over the hump and then traded Castillo in the middle of a playoff chase (which is when he said that quote about always playing for the future). Santana said the same thing. Maybe he felt with the core they had at the time, the FO should have done more to add to the talent they had. I don't disagree.
  13. That's an assumption I wouldn't make...I especially wouldn't throw in the word 'much'
  14. Wouldn't the bullpen still need to be used the same amount? We've often carried 5 guys for the rotation and 8 guys in the pen (13 pitchers). Now we're talking about adding a sixth starter, but the bullpen will still be worked the same amount. We gonna drop a reliever? If so, we're still looking at 13 pitchers along with our 3 catchers.
  15. This team will be lucky to reach 70 wins.
  16. yeah, I don't get it either...those comments normally seem to come from the contingent of people who defend the FO as a blanket rule...
  17. It was weird. In 2010, before they got Capps, we only lost ONE game in which Rauch was brought in for the save. In that game, he gave up one run and he didn't get the loss.
  18. I was gonna say the same thing yesterday, but I thought I'd let that one go...but since you said it, you get a like :-)
  19. The decision about who is gonna start in CF is almost assuredly already made. The last three big ST battles that we had the one who did the best didn't end up with the job (CF job in 2008, 3B job in 2010, rotation 2011)
  20. I get the point, but the coaches need to figure out who their best 5 are and go with it. No need to give the 6th guy, even if it's really close between him and the others, 27 or so starts
  21. Wouldn't it make more sense to figure out who your best five guys are and have them pitch as opposed to giving 27 starts to your 6th best pitcher?
  22. Scouting is what he does best...according to him, he did a lot of scouting when he took time off from his GM duties. The drafts during that time, and international signings, indicate he and the other scouts were doing well. He deserves this award.
  23. That was pretty good. Thanks for posting that.
