  1. What pressure...you think he felt pressure? Pressure from what? A batting race? Dude already has 3 batting titles, so I doubt he was feeling too much pressure. It's not like he hadn't been there before. In 2 of those 3 years, the race was 4 or less points. He dropped a whole 4 points in BA his last 7 games. If he had gone the other way, 4 points up his last 7 games, he still misses the batting title. Your post looks like just another example of looking for stuff to complain about Mauer. Even though you go on to give him credit
  2. You understood what he meant right? Do you take issue with what he was saying, or do you just want to nitpick how he says it to avoid the actual point of the post? This isn't English 101, people.
  3. Wilted? He batted .356/.464/.522 in September/Oct. It was his best month for OPS and his 2nd best month for BA.
  4. Not at all. I admitted I was wrong just yesterday...and it wasn't the first time. I've also said to more than one poster that I appreciated his view and it gave me stuff to think about....when the poster gives a very convincing argument that at least makes me doubt my view. I care more about getting to the truth than whether or not I'm right. Not to say I don't believe strongly in my opinions, but when debating, I'm always open to the fact that I could be wrong.
  5. Basically, slightly worse than Correia's career numbers in regards to ERA+ and K/9.
  6. Basically he said, 'I go in there with my mind already made up, I listen to Goin, and if he agrees with me I trust his stats. If he doesn't agree with me, I don't trust his stats.'
  7. Except in Mauer's case, he was a #1 pick who was tearing the cover off the ball and everyone knew he was coming up to replace AJ. In Doug's case, he was traded after we had seen Morny and so we knew exactly who was taking his place. And the moves didn't happen at the same time. Who is filling the one and two spot this year?
  8. Right at the beginning it said, 'Unlike in the previous two offseasons, there will be no over-promising and under-delivering by the Minnesota Twins in 2013.' Ryan said he'd do everything he could to significantly improve the rotation during the season ticket holders conference, didn't he? Didn't he also tell us: A: He'd do whatever he could to improve the team this offseason. which would help him achieve plan B... B: That his plan was to build a team to compete in 2013, and that C: Money wouldn't be a problem while doing both A and B? Yet at the beginning of this article the writer says, 'Unlike in the previous two offseasons, there will be no over-promising and under-delivering by the Minnesota Twins in 2013.' I guess, technically, the writer is correct, the promises Ryan gave us were told in calender year 2012.
  9. Unless the point is to sell as many season ticket packages as you can...the bottom line...money.
  10. I wasn't slamming the Willingham and Doumit signings. I like those signings. After the Twins 2011 season came to an end, before the 2011 postseason even finished, I was saying we needed to get those two guys. What I was saying is that Ryan didn't fix the lineup by getting those two guys. It didn't 'fix' the lineup as the poster suggested. They replaced Cuddy and Kubel. What 'fixed' the lineup was having a healthy Span, Mauer and Morny. When quoting my post, you missed the rest: 'And, this offseason, how has he done anything more than hurt it?' 'It' being the lineup. Any thoughts on that?
  11. And they did nothing but pocket that saved money instead of using it to address other issues. Those moves would have been much more appreciated if they took that saved money and did something with it instead of them cutting 18M off payroll. So, I'm sorry, I don't give him extra credit for that. Those moves still didn't fix the lineup, the health of our #1, #3 and our #5 hitter 'fixed' it. Additionally, you say 'The fact the starting pitching disintigrated was not to be expected by anyone.' Really? Not by anyone? It was a bad rotation in 2011, how did we figure it'd be better with practically the same starting pitchers? With the addition of Marquis?
  12. How did Ryan 'fix' the lineup last offseason? Span, Morny and Mauer got healthy...that is what happened. We got Willingham and Doumit, but we lost Kubel and Cuddy. How did HIS actions 'fix' the lineup? And, this offseason, how has he done anything more than hurt it?
  13. Fangraphs had him as the 3rd best CF in MLB last year. The people who voted for the Fielding Bible awards also had him 3rd in MLB. He isn't flashy, he isn't diving, but then again, he reads the ball so well, he usually doesn't have to. And he goes back on a ball just fine
  14. then adding on to the range side...stopping a ball going up the middle into the OF (even if an out isn't made) which keeps the guy running from 2nd from scoring. Often those fielder's choices you mentioned wouldn't have been even one out from a guy with minimal range. I'd rather have my stead eddies at 2B, I'll take the rangy guy at shortstop who might boot a few more balls but gets to a lot more.(and the 50 is likely still low :-)) Enjoyed the discussion.
  15. Far enough, even if it's 50 (which I think is low), it's still a plus of 40 outs. It's all about overall production. People talk about Jeter. He doesn't make errors, but he also doesn't get to a bunch of balls he should. That's been noticeable just by watching the Yankees games over the years and the numbers back it up. He makes the plays he gets to...he's sure handed (and he's situationally smart)....but he gives up a bunch of outs (to his left especially). It still sounds like they don't care as much about range as making sure the guy can make a play on the balls he can get to. Maybe I'm misreading it, but I don't think so.
  16. And that's true, but that's more of a guideline throughout the game (just have to look at games played at catcher in the majors). It's not an absolute necessity that he just couldn't go out there and catch. It's a manager's choice, not because he COULDN'T go catch more. I guess what I'm saying is this. Does anyone really think Mauer would have only played 74 games last year if catcher was his only option? Even earlier in his career. Do we really believe he'd only have played 110 games in 2006?
  17. That is a fair argument...and it could happen, Though, in case of last year (just last year), Span was in the .340s and Revere in the .330s. Not bad, but those are attainable numbers if/when Hicks comes up occupying the leadoff spot and Carroll is in the 2 hole. Additionally, he's had some horrendous #2 hitters over the years since Mauer has been with the team and he maintained his numbers anyway. We'll see. Thanks for the interesting viewpoint, something to monitor this year
  18. Not sure why you would be skeptical, but okay. You think every time over his career he benched Mauer or moved him to DH cause he HAD to?
  19. Well, Radke had a better ERA+ than Morris even though his actual ERA was bigger. Darvish posted an ERA of 3.90 this year which gave him an ERA+ of 116...which is is closer to Radke than Morris. Good call. I stand corrected. I guess the overall point is, why are the doubters wrong?
  20. 'His OBP/OPS likely would also take a hit as he had a high percentage of intentional walks last year with Span standing on 2B, those will likely decrease considering the internal options for the top of the order likely will not reach 2B as often.' And you just assume all of those IBB would have been outs? Besides he only had 10 IBB for the whole season, and only 5 had Span at 2B. Either way, his OBP would take a very, very slight hit even if all those IBBs in that scenario turned into outs (which is a big assumption). 5 IBBs in 641 plate appearance.
  21. Sounds more like Morris than Radke. Radke only had 3 seasons sub 3.90, whereas Morris' career ERA was 3.90 BTW, the doubters have a lot of info to base their opinion on, what do you have?
  22. That's true, but he was still playing...and if we had some bad arse DH (like Ortiz, for example), he wouldn't have DH'd as much and he'd have played more catcher. DHing Mauer is a luxury Gardy has (and thank goodness Joe hits as well as he does so it's not a hinderence when he does DH), but if Gardy couldn't DH him, he'd be catching more to keep his bat in the lineup. Additionally, if Gardy didn't have an overwhelming desire to play backups as much as he does (day games after night games, games where we took the 1st two games of a three game series, Sundays) or carry three catchers, he'd have more games played and more games behind the plate for his career as well.
  23. From '05-'10, only one player whose primary position is catcher had more games played (whether that player did it at catcher or elsewhere) than Mauer and none had more plate appearances.
  24. So they don't care about range? I'll take a shortstop with 20 errors over a shortstop with 10 errors if his range allows him to get to 100 more balls a season and convert them to outs. They judge defense by errors...explains a lot. Oh, and Hardy has great range...not sure what Anthony was seeing in Hardy that made him make a backhanded slap about Hardy's range
