  1. The problem is, if they're looking at Guerra in Rochester, he's been pretty terrible. He's got a great changeup, but when your fastball is just 88/89 mph, AAA hitters will start sitting on the changeup... like big leaguers will. But, he is just 23, and I would rather him eat innings at this point than Gray. I think Waldrop is a guy the Twins should be evaluating based on his GB rate.
  2. But even with Bashore, he was a lefty who was throwing 97 mph a week before the draft... At the end of the day, sure, didn't work out, but I couldn't argue with it at the time.
  3. It will be interesting to see if Buxton goes to Beloit to start next season. We know that Kepler and Walker will go to Beloit. Have to assume that Romy Jimenez will as well as he's put up terrific numbers. Candido Pimentel was just named the Appy League player of the year, although he spent time playing some 2B as well. Plus, it's possible that they have JD Williams return to Beloit for a 1/2 season more. Will be very interesting.
  4. Yeah, again, Colabello was signed as a "filler" of sorts, so I don't care about the age thing. Also, we're talking about a guy who, if he were to make it to the big leagues, would be a role player, a backup 1B and RH pinch hitter. I think he goes to Rochester next year, and if something breaks right for him, he could get to call himself "Big Leaguer" for the rest of his life. That's pretty cool! That's a pretty great story!
  5. I think if all goes well, the Twins will let Gibson compete for a opening day rotation spot. That said, they will want to protect his innings early in the season, and that speaks better to sending him to Rochester. Some will say it's to keep his arbitration status in check, but it might be also to avoid the Strasburg situation. They can have him skip a start or three in Rochester without as much scrutiny.
  6. This is actually a tough situation, tougher than some might want us to think. If we're talking about a starter, particularly a key contributor in the lineup, the decision should not be easy to DL. I'd say, until you KNOW for sure that the hitter will be out for more than 8 days, you shouldn't DL him. Why? Because that's a week longer of Denard Span or Justin Morneau in the lineup. I 100% agree that it shouldn't be 100% in the player's hands. It should be an honest dialogue.
  7. Elizabethton's Trainer was named the Appalachian League Trainer of the Year... I wonder if he would consider the big league gig?
  8. All because Diamond decided to throw at Hamilton's head instead of into his ribs or back... (or Gardy told him to throw at Hamilton's head, however you want to think of it.) I think Carson did a nice job and showed that he can be a solid MLB 5th OF/bench bat. He had a nice showing, for sure. With Span and Revere back and healthy thought, the move makes sense.
  9. OF/2B Candido Pimentel was named the Appalachian League player of the year on Thursday. He, and teammate Max Kepler, were the two E-Twins named to the league All Star team. Pimentel is hitting .330/.403/.422 with 68 hits, 43 runs and 16 stolen bases.
  10. New Britain not helped by New Hampshire at all. Jose Bautista was their leadoff hitter and hit two home runs and drove in five runs. (rehab) Candido Pimentel was named the Appalachian League Player of the Year. He and Max Kepler were the two E-Twins represented on the league All Star team.
  11. There's some pressure if they send him to New Britain, going into a playoff race. Sending him to Rochester, he can just continue to work with the same plan, pitch counts, etc.
  12. In other words, he's out for the season. He is out for the year. They aren't going to rush him back.
  13. It was mentioned in his Adopt-a-Prospect. Here is a nice article by Ben Goessling on what the plan is with Gibson the rest of the year... http://www.twincities.com/twins/ci_21385003/minnesota-twins-kyle-gibson-returns-triple-rochester
  14. Gibson will start for Rochester on Saturday. Great news!
  15. Parker, based on having just a 45% GB rate in 2008 and 2009, how did Blackburn get this perception of a ground ball pitcher?
  16. And if not for the TJ surgery, the 98 mph is still intriguing. I guess that's my point. These guys are signed to fill roster spots somewhere in the minors, and they have all done that well. If they can get to the big leagues, its' a tremendous story.
  17. I want to say he's wrong. I just don't know how to argue against his opinion.... I mean, his K/9 is lower than Nick Blackburn's when Blackburn was league average his first two years as a starter. He's the Twins #1, and next year even if they bring in two good pitchers, he's still the Twins #3... but it's hard to call him a #3 long term...
  18. Early this afternoon, Kyle Gibson tweeted the following: My wife & I are blessed to go to the D.R. each year on a mission trip to visit kids in a city/school that my agent & Garrett Anderson helped start. It opened in 2009 & we go every year to re-paint facilities, clean up the ball field and add new things to the project. If you are able to give $, sponsor a child, or want to keep up with the progress of the project, please visit this site. I will be auctioning off game used items on Ebay to help raise funds for our project in the D.R. cause they need electricity ASAP! More information will be coming when I know when & what I will be auctioning off! Thanks for the support!https://www.missionofmercy.org/BaseballProject Check out the website and what the mission is, but I wanted to include this because 1.) it's a great cause that Kyle and his wife are very active with, 2.) it's an opportunity for players and fans to give back, and 3.) collectors can contribute as well when Kyle throws some of his game-used items onto ebay. Kyle and his wife are very strong in their beliefs and their mission work, always have been. I know this has nothing to do with on the field, but I do think that players need to get credit for what they give back, not just in money or in lending their names, but in time and travel and work, etc. I will be getting more specifics from Kyle on this endeavor as more is known.
  19. I'm definitely still a believer... I just think that the injuries just never allowed him to get consistent at bats. Just when he got to a comfort level, there was another injury... Hopefully he can come to spring training healthy and strong and go from there.
  20. Yup, Jeremy, this is great stuff... Brock, I think that this link needs to be prominently displayed on the front page so people can easily find it and reference it. Josmil Pinto is very interesting because not only does he need to be added to the 40 man roster to protect him from the Rule 5, but he also can be a free agent if they don't as well. Potentially, the Twins could have FIVE catchers on the 40 man roster (Mauer, Doumit, Butera, Pinto and Herrmann). Luke Bard has biceps tendonitus. Not believed to be serious, but he probably won't pitch this year again.
  21. No, that was Jim Morris... Here is the story on Chris Coste http://www.amazon.com/The-33-Year-Old-Rookie-13-Year-Journey/dp/0345507037/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1345735476&sr=8-1&keywords=33+year+old+rookie
  22. Most of it.
  23. He was formerly known as Romy Trinidad, but due to paternal/maternal sir name kind of stuff, he is now going by Romy Jimenez. And I do not understand why milb.com mixes and matches his names. They generally say Jimenez in the box score, but down in the details, they say Trinidad.
  24. The Pedro Hernandez injury is not believed to be serious... not sure how to take that.
  25. Joe Benson has been out the last several games. He's got a knee injury and there is a decent chance that he misses the rest of the season. Tough year for a really hard working, good guy. Aaron Hicks was out of the lineup last night. Mainly it was just a day off, but he was also resting a sore Achilles.
