1. Ullger will be at 1B with Vavra getting 3B. (Corrected in article) Ullger has failed as a lot of things so far (3B coach, hitting coach, bench coach)... we'll see if he's capable of failing as 1B coach too.
2. I would say that Robin Ventura did a nice job of showing that having managerial (or coaching) experience shouldn't be a requirement for a big league managerial job. And, Mike Matheny and the Cardinals are showing that you don't need Tony Larussa (or Albert Pujols) to be pretty good again. A win tonight and they're back in the world series. He had no coaching experience. I don't think Molitor is necessarily a great choice for Twins manager, but it isn't because he hasn't been a manager before.
3. I guess we all thought that Gene Glynn was coming up too, probably to take over as 3B coach. I like Steinbach. I like keeping Vavra around just because I think he did his job well. The one I just don't get is keeping Scott Ullger around. Yes, just as the 1B coach, but anyone can do that. And, he was a 1B in his short big league time... why would he deal with the OF (although, they're all fine and don't really need him)? Curious how the minor league side of things will shape up.
4. Congratulations to Twins Daily contributor AJ Pettersen who got married on Saturday! Also former Twins farmhand and Twins Daily contributor Tony Davis was also married on Saturday.
5. Just got a note from Anthony Slama. He is playing for Mazatlan. He says they listed him as Anthony Thomas, and he doesn't know why. Maybe it was a translation thing!
6. I'm surprised that you think Mastroianni is a possibility for being removed from the 40 man. I thought he did more than enough to put his name in PEN as the team's 4th OF next year. Good stuff though! It lays out the situation quite well.
7. I have no question that A-Rod will post an OPS of higher than .850 the next 2-3 years. I don't think that there is enough realistic hope that he would actually come to the Twins, but whoever he plays for next year will get a great player. He's going to make some adjustments and come back and be huge next year. Would I risk $10 million for 5 years to find out if that's true? Absolutely not. Would I risk $2-3 million? Absolutely. Assuming along with the $100 million, we also would not have to trade any even decent prospects.
8. http://www.startribune.com/sports/blogs/174766401.html The STrib's Michael Rand asked whether the Twins should consider a deal for Alex Rodriguez. Of course, he's not coming here, we all know that. But should the Twins consider it. Rand says, what if the Yankees picked up enough to make the Twins pay just $50 million (of the $114 million he's owed) over the next 5 years. If not, what would it take? I mean, if the Yankees paid $100 million, and the Twins just needed to pay him 5 years and $14 million, would you? A-Rod's worst season (this year), he still had an OPS higher than Trevor Plouffe's this year. But he's 37, 11 years older than Plouffe. What do you think?
9. I assume that also means that you really think Tom Kelly was a horrible manager since he once had four straight 90 loss seasons. Yup, he won the two world series, but he was a horrible manager in 1990, and for those four years of 90 losses, right?
10. Maybe it's time for you to choose another team Maybe!
11. That's a good topic. I am VERY curious what the Twins do with Deolis Guerra. Because I don't expect them to compete in 2013, I would think they'll keep him around and at least give him a couple of months to see if his 88 mph FB can get anyone out. I think we could realistically see Arcia and Hicks by the middle of next year. I also am not ready to give up on Joe Benson or Rene Tosoni. I think the Twins need to give Plouffe a long look again in 2013 and hope he can be a more consistent power option. If not, we could see Deibinson Romero at 3B at some point (he's probably about the same age as Trevor). In the middle infield, I would expect to see quite a bit of Florimon, Dozier and Escobar (who is probably best at 3B). The goal being that one of them make advances and be a guy who can be counted on for 2014. I'll stand behind Dozier, and I think Escobar can be a very good utility infielder for a long time. Chris Herrmann will get time behind the plate and in LF. Gibson could pitch. I think Hermsen is a year away. Thielbar is a guy who should go to spring training and compete with Tyler Robertson for a bullpen spot.
12. The Caribbean Series generally finishes up just a week or two before spring training starts, so it typically goes into mid-January. So, it's a good 2 months worth of games.
13. 1.) I would not be surprised at all if Butera was removed from the 40 man roster. I would also not be at all surprised if Butera was claimed by a team quickly. 2.)Pinto could not be a free agent until after the World Series, so officially his agent could only talk with the Twins... but it's quite likely he had some discussions with other teams to gauge interest. It's hard to imagine that he'd be selected in the Rule 5. He's not a great athlete. He's not known to be a good defensive catcher (although he throws out a good percentage of runners). Last year was the first year since the Appy League that he's hit at all. I think it's good to have him back next year, but I agree that he shouldn't have been put on the 40 man at this point. 3.) The one I'm most curious about is James Beresford. I'd really like the Twins to bring him back.

15. The story lines at Twins Daily and in most Minnesota media circles on Wednesday was the performance of Kyle Gibson so far in the Arizona Fall League. Simply stated, through two starts, he has been remarkable and given Twins fans reason to hope. As you know, Gibson is joined in the AFL by pitchers Logan Darnell, Caleb Thielbar and Michael Tonkin as well as hitters Chris Herrmann, Evan Bigley and Nate Roberts. To this point, the focus has been on the Fall League, but there is plenty of Winter League baseball for us to watch, at least through box scores. There are leagues in the Carribbean, and the Australian Baseball League continues to improve. Aaron Hicks has been the story to follow early in the Winter League seasons. The recently-turned 23-year-old is off to a fast start in Venezuela. He is hitting .412 with two doubles and two stolen bases through the first five games. His team, Bravos de Margarita, is 5-0. He’s been the team’s leadoff hitter and centerfielder. Other Twins players currently on rosters in Venezuela include: Aguilas de Zulia (OF Darin Mastroianni) Caribes de Anzoategui (RHP Lester Oliveros, who had Tommy John surgery in September so won’t play) Tigres de Aragua (RHP David Bromberg, LHP Jose Gonzalez, LHP Edgar Ibarra, RHP Angel Mata, RHP Miguel Munoz, C Josmil Pinto, OF Oswaldo Arcia) Arcia went 0-8 with five strikeouts in his first three games before going 2-3 with a walk and a double in the team’s fourth game. There are also several Twins players in the Dominican Winter League this year: Estrellas de Oriente (C Drew Butera, C Jhonatan Arias) Gigantes del Cibao (RHP Adrian Salcedo, IF Alexi Casilla, IF Estarlin de Los Santos) Leones del Escogido (SS Pedro Florimon, Toros del Estes (Wilkin Ramirez) Twins top prospect Miguel Sano was the first overall pick in the Dominican Winter League draft (Which took place in mid-August) by the Estrellas de Oriente. He’s not yet listed on the roster, but that could be for a couple of reasons. Twins Instructional League just finished up last Friday, and he could get a break for a bit. I also wouldn’t expect him to get a lot of playing time at this stage of his career. Anthony Slama is one of several Twins minor leaguers playing in the Mexican League. The others are: Algodoneros de Guasave (1B Chris Colabello) Tomateros de Calican (RHP Gonzalo Sanudo) Several of the Twins prospects from Australia are playing in the Australian Baseball League, as well as a couple of US players: Brisbane Bandits (Aaron Thompson, Rory Rhodes) Canberra Cavalry (Tim Atherton) Sydney Blue Sox (Jacob Younis) Melbourne Aces (Sam Gibbons, Markus Solbach, Josh Hendricks) Perth Heat (Brendan Wise) I have heard that RHP Tyler Herr is also playing in Australia, but he is not currently listed on a roster. That is likely the case for any of these leagues. Particularly in Venezuela, it is about producing, and quickly. If not, players are released and replaced by others. There are several reasons that players go to these leagues. First, often times their teams encourage it. They want players to get additional at bats in an intense environment. A pitcher like David Bromberg is going to get extra innings in Venezuela that he lost in 2012 due to injury. Some players understand that they don’t make much money in the US during the regular season, and they need to take advantage of the years that they can get additional pay in these leagues. For young players from those countries, it is a pretty neat opportunity to play in front of their friends and families. If nothing else, it can certainly be fun to follow box scores throughout the winter!

Melbourne Aces (RHP Sam Gibbons, RHP Markus Solbach, 1B Josh Hendricks) Perth Heat (RHP Brendan Wise) I have heard that RHP Tyler Herr is also playing in Australia, but he is not currently listed on a roster. 17. Nick, There was plenty of talk about him being the most toolsy, but a lot of 'experts' did say that his weakest too might be his 'hit' tool.
18. so, Cuddyer should have not signed as a Top 10 pick by the Twins when he was 17, and instead signed as (maybe) a first-rounder as a 20 year old three years later... Then if he takes the normal steps to the big leagues for a college first round pick, he still doesn't get to the big leagues until he's 23. The funny thing is that the Twins have had a lot of successful guys come up and play pretty well. I'm just baffled that there are people who think that it's bad for the player to wait an extra half-season to get called up.
19. http://www.minorleagueball.com/2012/10/17/3517626/my-current-thoughts-on-minnesota-twins-prospect-byron-buxton Check out the thoughts of Minor League Ball's Byron Buxton. What Grade will he give the Twins top pick?
20. Proceeding cautiously with Hicks (22 year old coming off his first quality all-around season, in AA), Arcia (half-season of AA time) and Gibson (after missing all of 2012 with TOMMY JOHN surgery... yeah, that's crazy!
21. Hicks's comp is a slightly less powerful Carlos Beltran. HE can fill the stat sheet and could potentially hit 20 homers, steal some bases, play great defense. Arcia could potentially hit 30 or so home runs while hitting over .300... Left-handed Miguel Cabrera is saying too much... maybe a Brian Giles type?
22. I would like to hear some sabrmetrics brought in from time to time, but I agree with what Jim Crikket and others have said. If it's overwhelming or too they'd lose viewers. WE're going to watch regardless of what the announcers say. Some mute it to just watch the game. IF you're here and reading , you're gong to follow regardless. But the majority of fans aren't this heavily into it. And although I would like to hear more indepth discussion or an occasional advanced stat, too much is too much.
23. Sano is an incredible athlete who is probably 6-4, 250... definitely Rolen size, and definitely as athletic as Rolen was. Rosario is a little guy. A very good athlete and terrific hitter, but he isn't going to get terribly big, so you're right... he could develop into a good defensive 2B if he wants to.
24. Garza went from Ft. Myers to the big leagues in one year. Slowey went from Ft. Myers to Rochester. (same with Baker and Crain) Oh, and Kyle Gibson did too in his first pro season. Brian Duensing pitched for Beloit, Ft. Myers and New Britain in the same year. Logan Darnell did that last year. The Twins had five of their 2012 draft picks move up to Beloit this year. That's not exactly slow. The guys that didn't were fighting some injury. There are a bunch of examples of examples of college pitchers who the Twins have moved up quite quickly. Are they more patient with the toosly hitters? Absolutely. Should they?! Probably not. I'd say their track record with guys like Morneau, Mauer, Kubel, Cuddyer, Span, Revere indicates that they're not exactly hurting their players. Yup, every organization is going to have their Matt Moses, and the jury is still out on Plouffe and Benson and such...
