    That was a fun chat! Huge thank you to Doogie Wolfson for his time and answers... Please leave your feedback on these chats. We hope to do one per week. Who else should we try to get for guests? What time of day works best? Leave us any input you have.

    I certainly think that it should be. I'm sure it's case by case too... but there's no way I'd give up a full-year of a player if I don't have to. Most may prove not worth the hassle, but for the great talents, I'd sure like an extra year. (although the Twins do a pretty good job of locking up players that are worthwhile (and some that aren't) through a free agent year too (Mauer, Santana, Morneau, Cuddyer, Hunter, several others) let me add Mike... For me, it's not about the money, it's about keeping a player a full extra ceiling if he's worth it. Four-year Arbitration guys make a lot of money too if they're good.

    This, of course, is also very true. The Twins will promote based on earning it. They definitely have a track record of being willing to have college pitchers move 3 levels in one year (Gibson, Baker, Crain, Duensing, Darnell) and even four levels in one year (Garza in '06).

    In the Major League Rule 5, I would be surprised if the Twins lost anyone. In my opinion, Salcedo could be taken, but he's still in Ft. Myers rehabbing shoulder and elbow issues, so I can't imagine him sticking. I think there's a chance Bruce Pugh gets taken. Had a very nice bounce-back season in FM/NB. Throws quite hard. Reduced his walks. I think he's at risk. As I said above, I'd LOVE to see Slama taken, but as Jeremy mentioned, teams have had plenty of opportunity to take him for free. Not sure why they'd spend $50,000 now. No idea on the Minor League portion. There's no way that Angel Morales or Tom Stuifbergen aren't put on the AAA reserve list... I'd be shocked at least. But I guess we'll see bright and early in the morning.

    In a Tweet from the Cedar Rapids Kernals: Mauer moves down to the Midwest League to manage... Have to assume they want to keep the Spanish-speaking Nelson Prada managing Sano, Rosario, Vargas in Ft. Myers? Jim Dwyer likely stays with the Miracle too.

    I think that Meyer starts 2013 in Ft. Myers, makes maybe 6-8 starts there and moves up to New Britain. He'll make at least a dozen starts there before even considering AAA. Frankly, it wouldn't be terrible for him to spend the rest of the season in New Britain. 2014, he'll get a spring training invite (since he doesn't have to be added to the 40 man roster until after the 2014 season). He'll go to Rochester and basically be called up whenever he is ready. Boras, or whoever the agent is, it is wise to think about when players are called up. If the Twins wait a month into the 2014 season to call him up, he will get four years of arbitration (as a Super 2), but he won't be a free agent until after the 2020 season. If they wait until late June of 2014, he will likely not be a Super 2, pitch an extra season at a team-friendly price, get 3 years of arbitration and then be a free agent after the 2020 season. If they have him up all of 2014, he becomes a free agent after the 2019 season. If we can't be patient for a month or two, as life-long, die-hard Twins fans for something that makes so much sense, I don't know what to tell you. Parmelee and Hendriks made the Opening Day roster in 2012. Dozier was called up before May. These guys may not be in Gibson or Meyers prospect status, but it shows that they don't always make decisions based on finances.

    Thanks Brad! When John, Nick, Parker and I first became TwinsCentric, "community" was one of the keys to the whole discussion. When we all lived in the cities, we had fairly frequent get-togethers. As we were discussing TwinsDaily.com (before it had a name/url), "community/forum" was an absolute. And, this community has been great for that!

    But the Red Sox have a crap ton of money after unloading all the contracts. What harm does a 3 year deal do? In the Grand Scheme of things to the Red Sox a 3 year deal is harmless. A bad deal is a bad deal, no matter who makes it... Teams like the Red Sox are just able to overcome bad deals more easily than most teams like the Twins.

    Yeah, Romero was on the Twins 40 man roster before Plouffe, I believe. He's improved the last couple of years, and he's earned a right to come back to spring training if only to see where he is and if he can step up. But, most likely a Rochester guy in 2013.

    My assumption is it would be Cleveland... Agent speak to get people interested, but I'm sure when Cleveland non-tendered, they 'informally' made him a low offer. But yeah, could definitely be Minnesota or Chicago.

    I'd go 2 years, $18 million, with a $10 million option for 2015... with a $1 million buyout. So, that'd be a 2 year, $19 million deal with option.

    Terry Ryan said it perfectly in an interview last Friday with Judd Zulgad and Coomer on 1500espn... I wrote the quote down somewhere... But to paraphrase, he said that they (front office, scouts, etc.) evaluate all the players, and if you have to go up a 'tick' from that amount to get a guy, you do it... but if you have to go too far from what you believe is right, you run the risk of that guy being available for trade next year with a bad contract. So true.

    Welp, I guess we can... Cross him off the list. Fair deal for Haren for one year, make-good contract.

    Absolutely correct, raindog. It's Ryan's job to try to make the team semi-competitive in 2013 while really doing what is best for the organization long term. That doesn't mean I wouldn't still go after Sanchez and/or Jackson since they are young and will be around for 4-5 years. But spending (and especially overspending) just because it's what others are doing isn't right at all.

    This is my opinion too. I'm hoping the Twins can win 75 or so games in 2013, and with all the pitching needs, and some reason for hope with Plouffe, it would not be a priority for me at all... Which is kind of what makes Ryan's insistence upon a quality backup kind of surprising.
