1. It has been another interesting week for Twins prospects who are playing in the Winter Leagues. The Arizona Fall League came to an end on Saturday afternoon when the Peoria Javelinas (the team the Twins prospects played for) won the championship game. Some prospects tours on the winter leagues are coming to an end while a few others began playing this past week. Here’s how players from the Twins system did during the week from November 12-18. ARIZONA FALL LEAGUE Player of the Year – Nate Roberts, OF Roberts went 3-4 with a walk in the AFL Championship game on Saturday. He led the league in batting average, on base percentage and slugging percentage. In his 19 games, he went 29-65. He hit .446/.565/.662 (1.226) with five doubles, three homers and 15 RBI. He walked 12 times while striking out just seven times. He was also 6-8 in stolen base attempts. Evan Bigley – In 16 games, he went 15-62. He hit .242/.319/.371 (.690) with four doubles, two triples and nine RBI. Dan Rohlfing – He played in five games after replacing Herrmann in Arizona. He went 6-18 and hit .333/.435/.333 (.768) with five RBI. Logan Darnell – Darnell pitched in nine games, the last two were starts. He went 2-0 with a 2.45 ERA. In 18.1 innings, he gave up 18 hits, walked five and struckout 17. Hitters hit .257 off of him. Kyle Gibson – He made six starts. He was 3-2 with a 5.40 ERA. In 23.1 innings, he gave up 31 hits, walked eight and struckout 21. Opponents hit .326 off of him. Caleb Thielbar – He pitched in 11 games. In 13 innings, he gave up 21 hits, walked eight and struckout 12. Opponents hit .375 off of him. He was 1-0 with an 11.08 ERA. Michael Tonkin – Tonkin pitched 10 games in relief. He was 1-0 with a 2.45 ERA. In 14.2 innings, he gave up just eight hits, walked two and struckout seven. Opponents hit just .163 off of him. Chris Herrmann – he played in just three games before leaving Arizona due to inflammation in his left shoulder. In those three games, he went 5-10 with a double. He walked twice and struckout once. VENEZUELAN WINTER LEAGUE Player of the Week – Deolis Guerra, RHP Guerra got off to such a fast start this season in New Britain and started out well when he was promoted to Rochester, but things quickly went downhill, and he ended the season on the Disabled List. He’s pitching late-inning relief in his home country and he had a good week this week. He pitched in three games. In three innings, he gave up no runs on three hits. He walked none and struckout three. He recorded a save as well. Oswaldo Arcia – 6 Games, 4-21 (.190 – in one game, he was 2-5 with a walk, his fourth HR and five RBI. Brian Dozier – 2 Games. 4. I listen every week, but I don't always tout it (especially if I wind up angry at one or both of the hosts!)... but this one is definitely worth listening to.
5. Would have been good to see some improvement in his second season at E-Town.
6. Yup, and Mason's been pitching coach at a couple of other organizations the last two years. Yeah, not much to know about Doherty other than his independent league time in Kansas City after college. His role as an assistant to Dave Magadan is very vague too.
7. I'd be shocked if Roberts goes to Ft. Myers next year instead of skipping and going to New Britain. As we've talked about here many times... I generally don't worry about guys not being called up fast enough, but Roberts could quickly become the offensive-version of Anthony Slama.
8. Right or wrong, it is more about relievers versus starters for me. I definitely believe in the 2012 draft picks. I had the chance to see Melotakis and Baxendale (who dominated as a reliever but will be a starter next year). I didn't get a chance to see Taylor Rogers or Zach Jones, but the stories of Jones in Beloit were enough to get me really excited. The kid consistently was hitting 98 and touched 100 a few times. Duffey was incredible all season, and Chargois will be very good too.
9. The filter makes it really easy to see where former Twins went OR if anyone has signed with the Twins.
10. I didn't roll them up. I posted my Top 25, then posted where the other rankings had players. Nothing scientific.
11. The primary reason was because i didn't even think about it until after I posted the blog.
12. There is a chance that Roberts becomes the offensive Anthony Slama. Those are the only two players that even I believe have not been moved up quickly enough. As for the pitchers... Gibson started earlier this week, so he wasn't going to pitch. Tonkin has been awesome, but he finally gave up afew runs this week after none the first 5 weeks. Darnell started as well. Thielbar wasn't going to pitch in a championship game.
13. Congratulations to Nate Roberts, Evan Bigley, Dan Rohlfing, Kyle Gibson, Michael Tonkin, Logan Darnell and Caleb Thielbar and the rest of the Peoria Javelinas on their 2012 Arizona Fall League championship.
14. He's had knee problems his first two seasons. That's why the lack of ABs. He is actually pretty fast, and he has a really sweet left-handed swing. He also just knows how to get on base.
15. IN the top of the 9th, Nate Roberts singled again. He is now 3-4 with a walk in this championship game. During the regular AFL season, he led the league in Batting Average, On-Base Percentage and Slugging Percentage. Nice showing!
16. Of course, the trainer for Peoria... is a Twins trainer... With Billy Hamilton out of the game, Zach Collier moved from LF to CF with Twins prospect Evan Bigley taking over in LF.
17. he's not as free of a swinger as Pedroia. He's just a solid player and a solid prospect. He's got a chance to be a big leaguer, for sure. But when you compare his tools to OF ranked ahead of him (Buxton, Arcia, Rosario, Benson, etc), Roberts isn't going to jump out. Also, the fact that he played again in Beloit doesn't help his prospect status. That said, if they start him in AA New Britain next year and he plays well, he should move up lists.
18. 4th plate appearance - single to centerfield off of RHP Michael Marbry of the Rockies organization. (2-3 with a walk.)
19. Regarding the additions to the 40 man roster... I think they will add at least 2 and now more than 6. I'd guess four. My opinion on likelihood to be added would be: 1.) Hicks, 2.) Gibson, 3.) Tonkin, 4.) Santana, 5.) Hermsen and 6.) Bruce Pugh... Salcedo is certainly interesting. Like you said, he was a 'given' going into the season, but he was hurt all year.
20. 3rd plate appearance - Roberts singled to RF off a tough left-hander, Santos Rodriguez of the White Sox.
21. One of several reasons that the mlb.com list isn't included.
22. 2nd plate appearance - Roberts flew out to left field.
23. If you have MLB Network, you can watch it live now. If you're on your computer, go to mlb.com and find the link to watch it there as well. Nate Roberts is batting 2nd and DHing for Peoria. In his first plate appearance, he worked a four-pitch walk off of the Nationals' Ryan Perry. The next batter, Mike Zunino, singled to left and Roberts advanced all the way to 3rd base. He scored on a 1-2-3 double play.
