  1. Thanks for all the great questions, ya'll! It was a fun show. Be sure to watch it or listen on iTunes. Let us know what you think.
  2. Correct. As we talked about on tonight's Twins Hangouts, the Twins traded Revere, a .650 OPS 4th OF and got a mid-rotation starting pitcher (who had 2 good years of big league service time in a small ballpark) and a starting pitcher minor league who throws 95 with a very good changeup who strikes out over a batter per inning. I loved the trade when it happened. It made a ton of sense, and it was an obvious deal to make. The Twins got a steal. Now, the Worley aspect didn't pay off at all, but May still could.
  3. Just excellent as always. It's great to see that AJ's writing is really getting some great feedback.
  4. Last week, it was Dakota Watts. this morning, the Twins (Dustin Morse via Twitter) announced that the team had released two minor leaguers. Hard-throwing Matt Hauser was released, and so was outfielder Jermaine Mitchell who made a nice showing in his time in big league camp. I talked to Mitchell when I was in Ft. Myers about what he enjoyed about being a professional baseball player: [video=youtube;UI6GeuvoE-g]

  6. One week from today, the Minnesota Twins will be in Chicago, ready to take on the White Sox on Opening Day. This Monday morning was a difficult one for many in the Twins clubhouse as another round of roster cuts sent ten players to minor league camp. Matt Guerrier was given his unconditional release and is now a free agent. Chris Herrmann, Michael Tonkin, and Ryan Pressly were optioned. Meanwhile, Matt Hoffman, Aaron Thompson, Deolis Guerra, Deibinson Romero, Doug Bernier, and Wilkin Ramirez were reassigned to minor league camp. [PRBREAK][/PRBREAK] The team is now down to 29 players in big league camp including three non-roster players (Dan Rohlfing, Jason Kubel and Jason Bartlett). Rohlfing is again around as an extra catcher until right before Opening Day, as he was a year ago. Jason Kubel appears to be a lock for the roster. Meanwhile, Jason Bartlett remains in camp despite some rough offensive numbers. This, to me, isn't about him being the utility infielder. It would appear that Eduardo Escobar has that locked up. I can't help but wonder if the Twins might view him as a possible backup centerfielder, and if so, maybe Alex Presley's roster spot is not a given. Although Michael Tonkin and Matt Hoffman each made a strong impression in Twins camp, both will begin the season in Rochester, ready to be promoted when necessary. Ryan Pressly, who had a nice showing in 2013 as a Rule 5 selection, was also sent to Rochester. Chris Herrmann's demotion is a bit of a surprise. It signals that Josmil Pinto will make the team and that Ron Gardenhire will find a way to keep him in the lineup. Who's Left? (29 players - 16 hitters and 13 pitchers) Catchers - Kurt Suzuki, Josmil Pinto, Dan Rohlfing (NR) Infielders - Joe Mauer, Brian Dozier, Pedro Florimon, Trevor Plouffe, Eduardo Escobar, Chris Colabello, Chris Parmelee, Jason Bartlett (NR) Outfielders - Josh Willingham, Aaron Hicks, Alex Presley, Oswaldo Arcia, Jason Kubel (NR) Pitchers - Ricky Nolasco, Phil Hughes, Kevin Correia, Mike Pelfrey, Kyle Gibson, Sam Deduno, Scott Diamond, Glen Perkins, Jared Burton, Brian Duensing, Casey Fien, Caleb Thielbar, Anthony Swarzak,
  7. Herrmann can play 3 outfield positions. He can go into 1B. He played 3B in college. Of course he can catch. He also takes real quality at bats, uses the whole field and can hit some gaps. I do think that Presley isn't the given that I thought he was all along.
  8. Thank you for writing this. First, congratulations on your engagement. That is very exciting. Congratulations on getting through the first year as a pastor in your church. That can be tough. There's a lot going on, so I fully understand. Best wishes to you. Hopefully you will stop by from time to time for a Twins fix if you like!
  9. I'm all for Colabello and Parmelee... spent time talking with both. However, we don't know that they have "far more potential" than Kubel. Kubel is still young at 31-32 and has the potential to hit .280 with 30 HR. I don't think we'd say the same for Parmelee, would we? As for Bartlett, he missed all of 2013 and the final 2/3 of 2012. Clearly he's rusty. That said, he could be a starter if he gets his legs under him. Maybe, or most likely, not, but you never know.
  10. Either way, I want him to play 5 games a week. If he's with the Twins, maybe he catches 2-3 times and DHs 2-3 times. If he's in Rochester, I'd want him to catch 4 times and DH maybe once. As for if he should be on the team, Nick makes the argument for him... the offense could be bad and he could help.
  11. Yeah, the velocity was definitely down. Those were the reports I got last year, but that's also what I saw this spring when I saw him pitch 2-3 times that week. I talked to him and he talked about how much he enjoyed pitching in Venezuela and will go back there any time they would like him to. I wasn't totally surprised to hear the news, and yet, it always feels bad when players get released.
  12. I would agree that tomorrow will be the day that we'll hear more. It was surprising to me to hear from Watts that he had been released, but more surprising that he was the only one. Not sure what happened there. We're getting close though.
  13. http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/mlb-big-league-stew/twins-acknowledge-recent-struggles-humorous-lifting-tv-commercial-193038969--mlb.html?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter Have to LOVE the Twins advertising department. This one is pretty good.
  14. I'll be disappointed if Colabello isn't on the opening day roster, but Kubel is a proven veteran. I definitely understand him being on the roster regardless of his numbers. If Pinto makes it, he needs to play 5 days a week... Will be interesting to see how that plays out.
  15. I still think Meyer will be pretty good, potentially dominant. He was with the first cuts so he could get stretched out. May... I don't think anyone thinks he's going to be a top of the rotation starter, maybe a 4/5 and more likely a long-term solid reliever. Plenty of reason for optimism despite what will likely be a 4th straight 90 loss season.
  16. My opinion is his ceiling is what he did in NB in 2012... .270ish,, .350ish OBP, 35 doubles, 20 homers, 25-30 SB. Not saying all of those in one season, but I think those are his top numbers.
  17. who is the guy with Rasmussen? That's not Brad Steil. And, Steil can do his job just fine. Tom Kelly is always around and it doesn't effect Gardy.
  18. There was no competition for Pelfrey's #4 spot in the rotation. The top four were givens. The competition was for the fifth spot. It's like, there's no competition for the Twins for the starting first base job.
  19. Jones tells me tonight that his shoulder is feeling a little bit better. However, doctors have now found a blood clot in his leg. Doesn't look like surgery on that, at least not at this time. It'll be a while before he heads to Ft. Myers and starts throwing.
  20. Such as? yes, he struck out, but he's clearly a very good athlete. He's a switch hitter. He has a nice swing. His defense at SS is terrific. I think he's a guy who is (has?) going to take longer than many to develop his tools into skills, but definitely no reason to give up on him.
  21. Yeah, he's worked really hard in his offseasons to add some size and be able to retain it. He's got good height. He's never going to be a power hitter, but he can hit.
  22. Mike Berardino wrote an article and asked the players who were called out for their thoughts. http://www.twincities.com/twins/ci_25388017/struggling-twins-shrug-off-boss-criticism
  23. I assume there will be a contingency of Twins fans who will complain and say that Iglesius should be playing, right?
