  1. It also helped that he was facing Charlie Leibrandt.
  2. I like competition. Add in Buxton breathing down everyone's neck and I think all 3 will bring their A game. Will be fun to watch play out.
  3. Not to mention that Drew would have every incentive to play. It was a contract year. By contrast an owner who has no intention of re-signing the player would have no incentive to protect his long term health.
  4. Another point - for whatever reason the DBacks started 2012 with Drew on the 15 day DL. So he may have caused 40 man issues. This, again, wouldn't have been Drew's fault. He should have been put on the 60 day DL since that would have been more closely aligned with the 12 month recovery timeline suggested by Drew in the above quote. In fact, he still would have been able to return ahead of schedule - he would have been eligible to play early in month 10.
  5. http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20120301&content_id=26944304&vkey=news_ari&c_id=ari That was March 1, 2012. The owner made his off the cuff medical comments in June. So his timeline wasn't the doctor's timeline. I think its possible, maybe even likely, that Drew was caught in the crosshairs between his owner and his agent, while he was just following doctor's orders.
  6. Well its not the Twins, Gardy made that clear. Bullet dodged.
  7. Drew might not be worth $12m/yr in a vacuum but to this team he is.
  8. Morales would probably bump Kubel or Parmelee, and the 300-400 PAs they're likely to share, while upgrading the production by something like .100 points of OPS. Cruz would have to split time with Hammer (who is equally productive), Arcia (who we want playing everyday), and maybe a few AB's from Herrmann. Marginal upgrade. Florimon had 650 PAs last year. Gardy's already promised him his job. He's a .601 batter. Drew is a career .777 batter. But even if Drew declines into a .675 batter, spread over 650 PAs / year, that is a good marginal upgrade. He's the best value out there, IMO.
  9. Bartlett's the one guy to have hit at the MLB level. His troubles have been related to injury, not a general decline. He says he's healthy now, and he should be given a fair shot to win the job as much as Escobar or anyone else.
  10. John, if you and Aaron haven't already made your over/under bets, here you go: http://www.bettingtalk.com/reno-based-atlantis-becomes-first-sportsbook-release-mlb-regular-season-win-totals/
  11. He specifically mentions Bartlett though. Maybe Bartlett was part of the question, but it wouldn't be the first time Gardy's put him in the doghouse. It might be the first time he put him there before ST even started though.
  12. He sure seems to have made up his mind. If I were Bartlett I'd be kinda livid after reading that.
  13. What's the over/under on players who hit the DL by Mar 31? I'll start the bidding at... 4
  14. I hope the Twins are open to extending him.
  15. They could have spent 916k more than they did, so I think they could have gotten both, maybe. Their strategy wasn't to pay under slot at no. 2 so they could go over slot with subsequent picks. What they did was go slot or less with their first 13 picks, and came in almost 300k under their bonus pool. By my math, they could have offered Appel 6.916m and not changed anything the rest of the draft. They would have paid tax on about 600k of that, but not lost any picks.
  16. I wanted Appel. The Twins had the biggest bonus pool at a little over 12m and paying over slot to get Appel would have been money well spent IMO. If anyone was going to sign Appel that year, it would have been the Twins. But I understand the enormous risk of him walking and Buxton isn't a bad consolation at all. I've gotten to like the pick more in the past year and a half. Still way too early to call Buxton the BPA over Appel though.

  18. Ironically, the plot on which Hennepin County built Target Field was acquired by eminent domain. Alright I did my part derailing the thread. Now to bring it back on track: Go Twins Go!
  19. Biggio had a farewell tour. I don't remember if Edgar did or not, I assume so. Ripken, Chipper... guys who play long career for one organization usually get one. Its just going to be bigger for Jeter because of that old saying, everything's bigger in NY. edit: FWIW I agree Biggio probably deserves a spot in the Hall
  20. My question is about the trend. Every new report I read about Miguel Sano they all say the same thing - he's still getting bigger. Well, what's getting bigger? He's listed at 6' 4." is that 250 pounds all muscle? Obviously no. Not standing next to Byron Buxton its not. My thinking is, take the Sano from 2-3 years ago, when he looked like this: http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-6Q6woMo4QMk/Tx9c8cCh1WI/AAAAAAAABBg/ZFNEAltU4w8/s1600/SanoRunning.jpg And draw a straight line through the 250 pound Sano of today, and there's a chance that in 4-5 years his body "grows" into something like this: http://i.usatoday.net/communitymanager/_photos/daily-pitch/2012/08/03/youngx-large.jpg Heh, just kidding (not really). Maybe Sano's physical development mirror's Cabrera's, who again, isn't obese or anything but, he like Sano, isn't exactly Adrian Beltre over there and maybe keeping 25 pounds of paunch off his frame is the difference between playing 3B and 1B. He would seem to need every edge he can get.
  21. Re: Sano getting bigger. Should we start to worry about his weight? If he's 6' 4" and 250 lbs, then he's already got 10 pounds on Miguel Cabrera - who used to look like this, back in his 3B days for Florida: http://media.cmgdigital.com/shared/lt/lt_cache/thumbnail/960/img/photos/2012/10/13/c7/4e/miggie2003.JPG Not that either Cabrera or Sano are real fatsos. But, maybe those 20-25 pounds of paunch factor into the difference between a player that is able to stick at 3b and one who has to play 1B? Seems like every team has at least one guy - CC in NY, Sandoval in SF, Fielder in TX, Delmon in Bal, etc. All those guys, at their worst, were a lot heavier than Sano is now. Obviously they didn't get that way overnight. Would it be out of order to ask Sano to do something about his weight now?
  22. I re-watched some of the 1991 WS games this winter for fun. One of the things I noticed noticed was how, after Bob Casey barked a batter's name into the PA system... it went quiet. There was no music to fill in that gap. I think I liked it better that way. Home halves seemed to move a little faster.
  23. I'll concede he was overrated with the glove, didn't deserve all his GG awards (who does, ever?) But, depending on the stat you want to look at, his defense cost him something like -10 WARs compared to almost +100 WARs with the bat. Dwarfed.
  24. Wow, this is a special honor John, thrice over. I wish you and yours the best of luck, you will need it.
  25. An .828 career batting SS. Let that sink in for a second. The Captain is most certainly one of the all time best SS's.
