  1. See, I knew it. We're going to get more infielders in the outfield. Only the one guy who could actually stick - Santana, hasn't logged an inning out there. Molitor seems to be buying into the labels of these two players as much as the fans. I don't see how the answer to all the Twins woes - right down to how to handle Hicks and Rosario this spring - is to fill CF with Santana and SS with Escobar. It solves everything.
  2. If you want to quibble about it, Buxton was #6 on the last prospect ranking I saw, not #1. But the point is the same either way - planning around a prospect who hasn't even conquered AA is foolish. Further, if the Twins should be so lucky to have two qualified CFers in a few years they will have no trouble moving one of them. Again, the Span and Revere trades. And, this isn't 2009 anymore. The Twins have almost turned over their entire system. Organizationally they're pretty strong in middle infielders. OFers, not so much.
  3. That kind of planning got us into this current fiasco with Hicks. And it does not change the fact that a two way, up the middle player, could be tremendousbly valuable in trade, if Buxton does pan out.
  4. Santana has logged 3835 innings at shortstop in his career, and 722 at Center Field. I would think the bigger question is, can he be a two way player that can stick at CF in addition to SS? Think about how valuable that player would be.
  5. Question: Which position is there more doubt about, vis a vis Santana's glove SS or CF?
  6. This isn't coming from the Twins, is it? This is just Reusse speculating... right? https://twitter.com/1500ESPN_Reusse/status/579644317138026497
  7. This is unfair for two reasons - the FO put all their eggs in the Hicks basket, Gardy didn't. Secondly, we learned that Santana could play CF reasonably well and that Escobar could handle the SS job. It was not the lost season as its been made out to be.
  8. I think it just works out that way because of the math. Longer outings = fewer outings = more time between outings. Unless I'm missing something.
  9. UZR treats the shift as either on or off but in the outfield there is not a true shift like we see in the infield. I would call it shading instead. Does anyone know if UZR agrees or are there plays where it registers as shift=on, a LF shading the line against Mauer, for example.
  10. Escobar is only 2 years older and to John's point, why should he be a utility man and not the everyday SS simply because Santana is also a SS? The hole is still CF and Santana patched it up perfectly fine last year.
  11. The really strange thing is that while Santana has not logged any innings in the OF this spring (correct me if I'm wrong), but Escobar and Nunez have
  12. I think I speak for everyone when I say "NO." Because UZR is measuring outcomes! Its possible, but unlikely, that 100% of the fly balls hit to Hunter this season are what Inside Edge would classify as balls in the 90-100% range.
  13. Theoretically that will be balanced out by the increased number of balls hit to shallow LCF that most fielders won't catch, which Revere would be better positioned to make a play on. And if they don't balance out, then that is a poor reflection on the coaching staff and their defensive positioning moreso than the skill of the player. It gets back to sample sizes and the fact that UZR is more directly measuring outcomes than player skill. I've been a Revere bobo since Day 1 and I still see an elite CFer but I know he has said that they have him playing shallower in Philly whereas Gardy had him deeper. I think its possible the difference in UZR scores is entirely owed to the difference in positioning. And actually if you want to compare RZR or UZR scores for the entire OF for both teams from the past 3 years, the Twins score higher than the Phillies in both metrics although I think we'd all agree the Phillies had better athletes playing the OF in that span.
  14. Fair enough. Perhaps RZR is a better stat for 1 year team samples.
  15. Maybe I'm mistaken but I thought the distinction was between a 1 year sample for a single player, versus for an entire team (2000+ BIZs). That is a much larger sample than even 3 years for any single position player.
  16. Fieldf/x will make the catchability % more precise but it what you are talking about with taking actual game situations and assigning run values based on that seems just as error prone, perhaps moreso, than using weighted values.
  17. Isn't that a subjective judgment too? What if 90% of fielders don't catch the ball, but 50% of fielders would at least stop the ball rolling all the way to the wall? What about the speed of the baserunners, the decision of the 3rd base coach to send/hold the last runner?
  18. Any idea what level of MLB competition the Frontier League is closest to? Maybe, Low A?
  19. Graham looks like a solid pickup. https://twitter.com/MillerStrib/status/579367720996728832
  20. Yeah, can only imagine what the umpire saw that tipped him off. Fingers crossed for sure.
  21. Heh, even when Santana has a .405 BABIP season, his 130 OPS+ still doesn't quite equal Carew's CAREER OPS+ of 131. How good was that guy?
  22. I have myself on my ignore list!
  23. Then they have to embrace a lower arm slot, IMO, and find a way to command from there. Its exactly as errichi said. Throwing any higher than 3/4 is just going to kill his shoulder.
  24. Took the words out of my mouth. I had shoulder issues when I pitched in high school and the first thing I did when it started was drop the arm slot. I have to think that if Meyer is doing that, his shoulder is biting him. Which kinda makes you wonder why they wouldn't just stick him in the pen, IMO.
