  1. Wearing down and getting injured strike me more as connected than being alternative explanations for his drop.
  2. True this. Making 30+ starts at league average ERA is very valuable, even moreso for a team like the Twins who have such glaring holes in both the rotation and bullpen.
  3. I agree, but that type of player in my mind is not worthy of clearly separating from Gonsalves, Thorpe, Rooker, Javier, Kiriloff, etc. I think Lewis and Gordon are a tier, and then there is a bigger jumble after that depending on individual preferences. I can't really argue with Gonsalves being the highest since he should be a solid contributor in the majors this year as a backend guy.
  4. My concern with Romero is that it is not clear he can make it through a full season as a starter anytime soon. If he was wearing down at 110, he could be 3 years away. Still think his likely outcome is a potentially dominant, multi-inning, reliever.
  5. This whole post is right but the bolded part nails it. The value for Santana right now is that he is going to help the 2018 Twins win ballgames. If you traded him, you'd have to replace him with someone similar (or more realistically, 2-3 someones similar).
  6. It is a team option, so Twins have control. It is automatically exercised if he hits 200 ip next year. $1mil buyout. I would add, if Santana hits 200 ip next year, $14mil for 2019 will not be a burden (barring a massive injury after he hits the 200 ip mark).
  7. He also mentioned Dodgers, Giants, Angels, Mariners, Yankees as likely destination. Did say AL had advantage but seemed to think he'd stay on a coast for cultural and marketing reasons.
  8. Buster Olney on his podcast also called the Twins his darkhorse pick. Keith Law didn't exactly agree.
  9. My general rule is that I want to see a return before I give the benefit of the doubt. Returns from injury are not automatic. Thorpe is back, stayed healthy, put in innings, and did well at a decently high level. I want to see Kiriloff hit before I rank him too high. I share your concern on Romero. I think he likely ends up in the bullpen, perhaps by mid-season. I would personally put him behind Gonsalves and Thorpe, and I would have Javier and probably Rooker ahead of him too.
  10. My concern with Baddoo is it is Appy League numbers. We've been fooled before. Want to see some performance at Cedar Rapids before I get too excited.
  11. It's been mentioned and not exactly controversial, but my guess is the Mariners. Good match of player, need and culture (both in the org and in the city).
  12. Graterol and Enlow over Thorpe would be my quibble, but they all belong in the top 11. I'd probably have Javier 7.
  13. Those are all perfectly fine pieces, but the Pirates can do better.
  14. Another example of how the previous front office was behind the times in where the game was headed. Guys who can't play a position don't stay on a roster unless they have a hall of fame level bat.
  15. I'd emphasize the absurd gobbledygook. The argument is it works in recruiting, I'm a little skeptical. But I will agree it is a 3 year process to see if it works. Going to be a rough next 2 years.
  16. The best option for the Twins is to keep him. He fills a big hole competently.
  17. He did build something at his previous stop, so he does deserve a shot. But it's going to be a long three years before we find out whether is up to the job.
  18. I'm no Fleck fan but he probably needs 3 years before we'll know this for sure. But if you're right, it's another lost decade of Gopher football.
  19. That would be a cyanide pill to swallow after this past year.
  20. Kiriloff and the unprotected bullpen arms don't add anything. High volumes of medicore or injured prospects are not that attractive. Though I have some hope for a rebound for Kiriloff. Kepler and Gordon is probably close for Cole, I think adding Gonsalves easily does it, but not enough for either of the other pieces. I'm personally really high on Kepler, but I'm not sure that's the position of the industry, and while Gordon and Gonsalves are nice pieces, they aren't the difference makers someone would want for a really solid 2 like Cole.
  21. The schedule was not that much harder this year. The nonconference schedule was a joke, the Big Ten West is pretty terrible and the Big Ten as a whole is mediocre. I haven't followed super closely, but I really think they could have been more of a pound and d team and had more success, but changing systems with mismatched (and limited) talent is probably the main culprit. The next two years are probably going to be worse on the field, and Fleck is not exactly killing it in recruiting (though it is ok).
