  1. I don't boo him, but I am so oversatured with Yankee hype that I can't help but be annoyed by the guy. I'll acknowledge his talent, his guts, and his approach, but that doesn't overcome the rest. It's just too much of him and too much of that team. I think sometimes he's been vaulted into this transcendent level of play that he's not always worthy of. He's comparable to guys like Biggio and Yount - that's the level of player I think he is (a great player) but not this immortal giant of the game. That just sort of adds to my annoyance I think. Maybe it's because I was always such a big Biggio fan.
  2. Two just isn't going to happen. Realistically I think we need to hope for one, bring back Baker, and roll with what we have. You're talking about an opening rotation of FA-Diamond-Deduno-Hendricks-DeVries with Vasquez/Walters/Hernandez in the mix as well. Yeah, it's ugly, but you have Gibson and hopefully Baker coming along later. Not to mention I think you have to consider trading Span for an arm to add to that mix as well. (It's what I would do personally) As far as competing next year - I think it's a delusion to begin with, I don't feel tethered by that ball and chain. I don't see any reason to sink 4M into a guy like Liriano when it would be better served adding a Doumit-like bat for depth (I believe we'll need it) after Span is dealt. You'll get much more bang for your buck and none of the aggravation that comes with that guy. I'll repeat it again because we have a ton of turd-polishing going on in here: In three of the last four seasons he has been one of the worst starters in the AL. At some point the consistently bad results matter more than peripheral numbers.
  3. Yeah, Adrian is clearly getting more passes his way, what I don't like in the offense in the redzone is typified by one play to me. I can't remember which of the three opening field goal drives it was, but Ponder threw a slant to Aromoshadu out of the back of the endzone. It was incomplete but he literally took no time to look at his options, threw it to an inferior player who was covered (maybe even double covered if I remember right) and basically wasted a down. I love the way they are using Harvin, improving the quantity of looks for Peterson and Rudolph, and balancing the running formations. But good god do they need to get better in the redzone, it's like Percy and Adrian stop existing for some reason.
  4. I guess I thought the issue has been they haven't run enough.
  5. Yeah, defensive speed is lacking. I thought when we went up 9-0 that we were in trouble, we invited the Skins to get a ton of momentum out of those failed opportunities.
  6. Throw our own batch of bad arms out there that don't cost us 3-5 million. Hendricks, DeVries, a worthwhile FA, Diamond, Gibson, Deduno, etc. If you're going to willingly put bad pitchers in your rotation, why pay them a lot?
  7. There are plenty of pitchers with "stuff" that have never been anything. Liriano has failed over and over and over again. At some point "stuff" isn't enough - especially when you have been one of the worst pitchers in the AL for three of the last four years.
  8. If you believe we need four starters from outside the organization than A) we don't have enough money for that and Liriano still sucks and doesn't solve that need. What we don't need is live bodies - we need good arms. Liriano has repeatedly proven he is not that. If he gets signed, I'm guessing it's as a bullpen arm. I'm firmly against the idea of investing money into short-term solutions for next year given the number of problems this team faces. If you're going to sink money into the pitching staff - sink into players that can be here for 3-4 years.
  9. Some of the stats look nice today but Ponder had some simply terrible throws. Held the ball too long all day as well. And this was the kind of performance I was worried our defense was capable of, I'm not sure what the real identity is yet.
  10. Are the people saying "just 4 or 5 million is fine" in the same group that gets irritated when we piddle away 12-15M on a handful of the 4-5M guys? Just last year the cash we spent on Capps, Marquis, and Jamey Carroll was a 10M player. Do we really want to mismash another 10-15 on three subpar players rather than pooling and splashing? I know for a fact a few of the people wanting to gamble on a guy who has established himself as one of the worst starters in the AL are also guys that complain about wasting money in "reasonable" contracts that add up to real money. Liriano isn't very good and his numbers last year show it.
  11. Plouffe at second spells a double disaster - his poor fielding and it affecting his bat, which we need to be semi-capable next year.
  12. Affordable, to me, means they pay what they feel they're worth. Which is bad news if you think they'll sign a top-end pitcher - they always get overpayed.
  13. Look, he's better than I expected, I won't deny that. And the 49er game impressed the hell out of me. But the offense hasn't been very good, I need to see it be more than Percy and the offensive line carrying the load before I start being impressed overall.
  14. I love how a million or two makes Liriano's performance odds magically transform from awful to awesome.
  15. I don't disagree that we could upgrade our WR depth, I disagree that is it crippling our offense. The QB can do a lot at the line and during a play to work people open and to throw people open. (Odd term, but it's one thing Rodgers is particularly good at) Manningham and Moss are not drawing double teams. It's absurd to think teams are saying "I'll let Crabtree and Davis beat me....but not an ancient Randy Moss!" Again, Smith is playing better and is utilizing his skill players better. Which is what Ponder needs to do.
  16. I don't shell out a ton of money and the prospects it will likely require in the real world (not this fantasy world the thread has devolved into) to get a guy who has a trending velocity chart like this one and a career ERA a run higher away from his pitcher's paradise at home. I'm all for talking about realistic options (Span for Shields is realistic with some tweaking) but the couple of posts these last few pages are just obnoxious.
  17. Again, in this NFL, that kind of QB will not get it done. Not even with a ridiculously good defense like SF had last year. His two leading receivers were on this team last year. So I'm not seeing your point. Crabtree and Davis are getting the same attention they did last year, all that's changed is Smith is playing better. People have to understand this - in this league QBs make skill players better, rarely the other way around. Fine yes. Impressive? No.
  18. ftfy. Awww somebody didn't like their absurd suggestions being called out! We all want better pitchers, let's start with developing them better rather than targeting questionable short-term (much less longterm) options under questionable premises.
  19. He's not the reason we're winning games. And the offense has been inept for long stretches this season, so in part we're winning inspite of the offense. His QB rating is driven by completion percentage and low turnovers - which are good things - but we need more from him if we're a serious contender. The last three weeks the offensive line, special teams, and defense have impressed me. The offense laid an egg against a bad Detroit defense and were pretty meh against a sub-par Titans team. I was impressed in the Niners game though.
  20. If Liriano was a "world beater" this year who has a "decent" chance of being our best starter - I can only imagine what a pitching god like Bruce Chen, Henderson Alvarez, or Luke Hochever would be worth on the open market. Just a hint, if three months of very good pitching still isn't enough to drop your ERA below 5 - you shouldn't be gushed about. At all. You're a hope and a prayer, not a sound investment.
  21. Oh...so getting is an ace is only a matter of trading marginal prospects and convincing them to take less money? Well damn. Why don't we get five of them? Perhaps we should (dare I say) try this approach with middle infield as well? Do you think a bag of balls and two hot chicks will get us Elvis Andrus for the next 17 years? Jesus offseason fan speculation can get obnoxious.
  22. Well, that was a mighty fine example of how your personal beliefs can interfere with this kind of analysis. Look, one of the reasons I'm not a republican is because of the rhetoric against homosexuals. But I'm not so vain as to believe I have the ultimate checklist of who's distortions are worse. Hell, no offense, but I take the Bush administration's lies about Iraq and the recent distortions by the Obama administration about the cause of the embassy bombing as MUCH worse distortions. But that's just me, I won't hold anyone else to that because that's my own personal opinion.
  23. Is there some reason you just don't post various synonyms of "jerking off"? Because the last few weeks you would make Paul Allen blush with your homerism. This offense has looked bad more often than it has looked good. There are plenty of reasons not to be in love with this team and it isn't just about the other WRs and TEs. Great QBs can drastically raise the level of the skill players around them. The Vikings have plenty of weapons to be at least an average offense. At some point you do have to pin it on the guy distributing. It would be a lot easier to be positive about what Ponder has done well if you weren't so damn eager to ignore all the things he wasn't doing well. And great point Ben, I've noticed the same thing. The front seven on defense are playing some intense, ferocious football and the guys up front are giving the QB a lot of time and the RBs some huge holes. Winning the line of scrimmage does wonders for a team's ability to win games.
  24. Shhhh....you're trying to make Dave less obnoxious!
  25. I don't see the need to splice out who has worse lies or distortions because it a matter of opinion in most cases. As for Romney switching positions, I chalk it up to presenting himself as a character in the primaries. As a matter of principle I agree it's not tasteful, hence why he doesn't have my vote. But I do think we're going to see both parties veering more and more towards this happening with the extreme takes both bases are digging in with.
