  1. 10.5M? Holy schnikes.....why on earth that much?
  2. I hate WAR, would much prefer OPS+. Either way, your arguments against Donaldson do nothing to level the difference between him and Plouffe. Call Donaldson whatever you want - elite, very good, whatever - by every measurable we have it's still MUCH better than Plouffe.
  3. Is Mike Trout "miles apart" from Jayson Werth? Because the number disparity over the last two years is very similar. I think I can safely say "yes" to that, plus the fact that "not anything close to" and "miles apart" seems to be needlessly splitting hairs. Donaldson is a significantly better and more valuable player by basically every measure known to us.
  4. I continue to be flabbergasted people think Plouffe and Donaldson are anything near the same thing.
  5. Time will tell, but as a general rule (and what boggles my mind in this debate is that many of the people pro-trade would generally not advise such a move by the Twins for precisely this reason) I think dealing a high performing player for a bunch of low ceiling AAA and low minors/high upside guys is an easy way to get burned. Most of the people lauding this move would similarly laud the Twins for doing the opposite: moving high rated A ball prospects for an established star because, in general, prospects bust. And the rate of it increases the further from contributing that they are. Couple that with the near-ready players being universally classified as low-ceiling players and you have a recipe for a disaster. Right now, if Terry Ryan had dealt Brian Dozier for Dustin Ackley, two AAA guys that look a lot like Anthony Swarzak, and one low A ball prospect we'd probably roast them for it and rightfully so. But because Beane did it, it's some kind of sacred cow. Also, you don't have to think highly of Donaldson based on WAR - there is basically nothing about him that isn't elite. (I'm quoting from an article I largely disagree with, but they lay out just how freaking good Donaldson is in decent detail) However, I too share the sneaky idea that they know something about him the rest of us don't. Then again, people would've made the same argument about Tim Hudson and that was an utter disaster of a trade for Beane.
  6. Ben, by many accounts I've heard Barrerto may end up as a 2B, which is an impact on his value IMO.
  7. Am I the only one that keeps thinking Butch Husky every time I pull this thread up?
  8. No, 30M isn't, but that's not much less than what retaining Donaldson through his arb. years was likely to cost either. That's the part that gets me. I like that Beane is aggressive and sells high, I just think this one is a head scratcher. Especially in light of giving a mediocre DH that kind of money.
  9. I liked the idea of Deshields at first base, I've always thought that coach should have a lot of experience reading pitchers, stealing bases, and talking situations. I'm a bit apprehensive about how our choice for that position fits that, but not anything I'm losing sleep over.
  10. I kind of hope the Twins bring Swarzak back as a potential reliever, but Duensing is no longer needed at the price he's going to demand. I just wish we would've moved him and Fien last year while they were effective and started auditioning the kids in AAA.
  11. 15M for Cruz seems like a bargain relative to some other moves being made.
  12. If he merely wanted to add players he didn't have to move his former MVP candidate. This was an attempt to sell high before his price escalated. The problem is that they went out and spent what it would've probably taken to retain him for 3 of the next 4 years of team control on a dude that can't play in the field, can't run, and can't hit for power. Yes, he restocked some talent in doing so, but seems unnecessary when you can afford to throw 30M at someone like Billy Butler.
  13. Yeah, markos is right, he's not as high-end a prospect as some are making it out. Good point about Butler too. I'd much rather have spent that 30M to retain Donaldson than do anything with Butler.
  14. Just so things are clear this difference: The last two years Donaldson has outproduced Plouffe by a full season's worth of Plouffe's RBIs (60), almost twice as many homeruns, twice as many walks, 80 points better slugging, 75 hits, 60 OPS+,, lights years in defense....and there isn't a big difference? That's roughly the same difference between Mike Trout and Jason Werth, by the way. Just for a point of reference.
  15. So games played is held against Donaldson because he's on the field and producing? Their age is what makes them similar? And you lump them together as "good" defenders? Wha? Donaldson finished fourth in the MVP voting, was a starting all-star, and by basically every stat and measurement available a significantly better player. I'm not "making that out" to be anything....that's sort of just how it is since Donaldson's production is what it is. There is virtually nothing about Plouffe that makes him a similar caliber of player.
  16. I would imagine with only 140 characters it might keep their attention better for sure.
  17. How did I not hear about this story until today? Awesome for Keith Law!
  18. Let's look at the difference the last two years: Player A: 329 hits, 68 2B, 53 HR, 193 RBI, 478 SLG, 152 BB, 240 Ks, 145 and 126 OPS+, Gold Glove Caliber defender Player B: 255 Hits, 62 2B, 28 HR, 132 RBI, 407 SLG 87 BB, 221 Ks, 92 and 110 OPS+, mediocre defender These are relatively close to the same player to you? Is that just perception or how did you arrive at that conclusion?
  19. 1) That is the most optimal situation. The least optimal, by contrast, is you just lost 50M in available salary over 6 years. 2) Arbitration growth is relatively steady already 3) This also assumes Dozier is a stud into his 30s. Chief's right, handing guaranteed contracts around when you don't have to is precisely what got us Blackburn's contract. Is Dozier likely a better player? Sure. That doesn't make the thinking any less problematic. Let him earn what he earns in arbitration and worry about the FA years when you have to. You're putting the cart a mile before the horse to sign him now.
  20. Um, their problem wasn't a lack of talent like the Twins. Their problem was they filled an infirmary with talent last year.
  21. Where would you play Craig? I thought about him too I just didn't like the idea of him and Arcia in the corners.
  22. You should probably go back and look at this, the trade record isn't as sterling as you think. That's more of a perceptual bias because Beane is a very talented GM. Just to name one: the Hudson deal was pretty much an utter disaster.
  23. I saw that too. People have said the pass rush failed them yesterday and I thought the real failure was not making the Wisconsin lineman actually block by getting a few of the flags they earned in that game. There were a lot of hands outside on shoulder pads tugging from what I could see. At the same time, we had them 17-3 and needed to put our boot on their throat and couldn't do it. That was largely thanks to a badly blown coverage on the big pass play on 3rd and 8 among other things. Avoiding those mistakes and stepping up will come with talent and just by being in big spots like this so a great step for the Gophers this season.
  24. You should really go back and read your first post. The only similarity Josh Donaldson and Trevor Plouffe have is the position they play and even that one of them plays at a totally different level. So to compare the tradability of those players is a bit silly. It'd be like arguing trading Arcia is like Trout because they're both arb. eligible outfielders. The thread about Plouffe and this one should have no connection because there is literally no comparison between the two nor the haul that could be received for them.
  25. That hands to the face call was absolutely terrible. Gophers showing some heart here to keep this thing tight.
