  1. The only grounds that the MLB has for a stiffer suspension is that he tampered with their investigation. If they are using this in their argument then they should directly state that. I would be surprised if ARod wasn't involved in some way but they actually need proof if they state it. the system is designed so that the arbitrator is neutral but the MLB has already fired one arbitrator that disagreed with their decision. Of course the MLBPA could fire an arbitrator but I can see them letting ARod fry. http://hardballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/05/14/major-league-baseball-fires-arbitrator-shyam-das/
  2. The only problem is that you are implying that Escobar is a bonafide MLB'er. He kind of sucks regardless of how many positions he has played before. If Bartlett beats out Escobar and they only carry one backup MI'er then he will obviously have to show that he can handle 2B/3B. But in the end they are going to carry two futility infielders like they do pretty much every year. It's better than carrying two backup catchers but not much.
  3. Escobar kind of sucks. Losing him because he's out of options isn't a concern. Almost every season this team frustratingly carries 2 futility infielders. Last year it was Carroll and Escobar.
  4. I like how people keep expecting a little improvement at the plate and how he could hit .250. On the flipside with any regression he has a <.600 OPS. He's a tolerable placeholder but there is no way that he is part of the long term plans.
  5. The problem here isn't that ARod isn't a pile a crap but rather that the MLB is just making up the law as it goes. I think there is enough evidence to issue ARod a 50 game suspension as a first offense w/o a failed drug test but there is nothing that resembles a 162 or 211 game suspension in the CBA. They are of course targeting him due his likely obstruction of the investigation but then directly say that is why he is being suspended.
  6. Florimon and Colabello shouldn't get any bonus points over older veterans because the Twins are rebuilding. They are younger but they shouldn't be considered long term pieces either. I could easily see Bartlett winning a spot on the roster over Escobar (or they carry two backup infielders) and splitting time at SS with Florimon.
  7. He basically asked for it by publicly going about it the way he did but they shouldn't have stopped there.
  8. I have no idea what you mean here. They were juicing but McGwire and Sosa were twice the players that Willy and Kubel were.
  9. I'm excited about Arcia but wary as well. There were hints (scouting reports and stats) of being overaggressive with problems hitting breaking balls in the minors and his first MLB season increased those concerns. Has still has nice (offensive) upside though.
  10. Garza would be the only pitcher that can actually be considered a pseudo ace. Despite good stuff and peripherals Nolasco has a career ERA much closer to Correia and Pelfrey. He was an okay signing because he has stuff but the signing only works out for the Twins if he actually is the pitcher that he was in his 6th season instead of the pitcher that he was for the previous 4 seasons.
  11. By the time you get to pick 40+ there is about a 10-20% chance that the player ever becomes a decent MLB starter. A team can have confidence but those are the facts.
  12. 7 straight seasons of <4 ERA pitching. How do you figure he isn't going to be producing? He's actually a really good pitcher but some are trying to suggest that he's just another back end arm on a team full of back end arms.
  13. Wojo is waiver wire fodder and Guerrero should have been picked in the middle of the first rd (or higher) so that's an excellent move.
  14. To get players to help for the years to come you will be giving up really good players for years to come. Garza, Ubaldo and Ervin aren't young aces but a 2nd rd pick is basically a 10%-20% lottery ticket. There are reasons to be against signing Garza, Ubaldo, Ervin or Drew but the 2nd rd pick is not it.
  15. Betemit would be like going back to Batista in the field. Plouffe isn't a good fielder but Betemit is incredibly awful. Reynolds is even worse.
  16. I really don't get all this Deduno love. He's 30, he K's 6/9IP (and BB's 4/9IP) and he is coming back from a significant injury. I understand that Corriea is boring with zero upside (other than stability) but Deduno (if healthy) seems more like a guy that you move in and out of the bottom of the rotation instead of opening a spot for him.
  17. I hope Betemit isn't being mentioned for any position that requires defense. Same goes for Reynolds.
  18. WAR is okay to use as a basic analysis but making it the definitive criteria is lazy.
  19. He's simply not Sano and he's 1.5 yrs younger than Rosario with a limited pre-professional baseball experience. You can't just promote guys based on that. He still has 3 options left. He could do 1 level/yr still although hopefully he can jump two levels in one season.
  20. He was merely okay in 2013 in full season ball and he wasn't very good in the appy league in 2011 so I really don't understand how you think he should have been promoted (even in hindsight). yes, there is the option clock ticking but the first priority is player development. My CF comment had to do with Hicks/Benson offering defensive value whereas Kepler doesn't offer much so he needs to hit better than them.
  21. I'm not sure you can consider it mistakenly holding him back in ETown for a second season. I have a hard time believing that he wouldn't have been completely overmatched in Beloit a season earlier. I always liked Benson but I'm pretty sure I always pegged him as a .240-.250 hitter that had the ultimate upside of hitting .275. Ultimately it was the K's (the basis of the low avg projection) that doomed him. I have also have had Hicks projected as a low BA hitter for similar reasons. The thing that gives me more optimism on Kepler's offense is that he has done well keeping the K's in check. Of course he needs more offense since there are no illusions that he's going to be a CF'er.
  22. Danny Santana has very little offensive unless we are talking to people that say great things about all prospects. He will probably be lucky to crack a .300 OBP and in the end is probably very similar to Florimon.
  23. I'm pretty sure that Kepler was fluent in English when the Twins signed him. I also think he starts in Ft Myers playing OF/DH/1B. He will start almost every day but he will move around since the OF is crowded and Hicks might start there.
