  1. 1. I don't understand why anyone thinks Liriano wants to play here. He's going to get an offer to play somewhere else because he can get strikeouts. He has clashed with the coaching staff for years, and had been unhappy with the front office in the past. 2. Liriano has an ERA of 4.75 since coming back from Tommy John surgery. His walk rate is over 4. Why would you want him back? He's not good at preventing runs from scoring. That's his job. http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/l/liriafr01-pitch.shtml#2011-2012-sum:pitching_standard He's essentially Tony Batista here. The Twins need power, so they go get a player who might hit some homers, but will do everything else so terribly that he is damaging to the team's success. The Twins need some guys to miss bats, so they get a guy whose strikeouts don't result in good pitching.
  2. This is completely untrue. The Twins were not willing to pay Santana.
  3. One of the many problems with football and basketball statistics is that the opponent has finite resources to allocate as they see most efficient. A receiver who can't beat double coverage may produce worse statistics than an inferior player who is only drawing one defender. A power forward who guards the unskilled centers won't have as many points scored against him. I'll put it this way: if LeBron James got the same attention from defenses as Wes Johnson does, what would his numbers look like? If the guy covering Calvin Johnson has no help all game, what would he be able to accomplish? These issues impact not only the statistics of that player, but everyone else in the game as well. The second guy covering Johnson opens things up for another player. The double that comes on James every time he steps towards the basket leaves shooters open all over the court. In baseball, everyone sees essentially the same thing, tweaked to exploit that player's weakness.
  4. Let's not blur the issues. The Pohlads are responsible for the budget. If you have issues with the budget, that's another argument entirely. JR has nothing to do with it (or, perhaps more accurately, he has VERY LITTLE to do with it). I've been told repeatedly that the Pohlad family has never denied a request to add payroll.
  5. I'm sorry, what? "Strategy" is not code for sacrifices and hit and runs, it is making decisions to put your players in position to succeed. Read books so you know what words mean.
  6. I think there's a small chance of that but it's unlikely. Doumit had a pretty typical season in 2012. Willingham is probably due to regress. Mauer may progress and the same goes for Morneau. Span had a pretty typical year (if he's healthy). Revere has a little room to grow but could also regress (though most know I'm not high on him at all). Parmelee is a wild card, as is Plouffe. The middle infield needs serious help, though Carroll can step in with a meager yet steady performance if everyone falls on their face. On the other hand, Hicks and/or Arcia could be up in June or July if somebody falters. To have a dreadful offense, the Twins would have to add no one this offseason and they'd have to suffer several serious injuries. Always a possibility but I'd consider it unlikely. Are Morneau and Span going to be here? Should we not expect Jamey Carroll to be a hole in the lineup after a poor 38 year old season? I named seven positions that could be significant problems. Most likely, they won't all miss, but I sure wouldn't be surprised if three or four of those are disasters. Add that in to a relatively weak middle of the order, which is nearly a guarantee unless Willingham can replicate his early season form and Mauer plays like an MVP, and things aren't looking good.
  7. There's a very good chance the offense is dreadful next year, they could easily end up with batting order holes at 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, RF, CF and DH, based on what many are expecting to be done this offseason.
  8. That's interesting. I'd like a manager that makes the correct personnel and strategic decisions to maximize the team's ability to score/prevent runs, rather than someone who "relates to the modern baseball player" and "played for the Twins so maybe he'll be willing to accept less money."
  9. If the Twins were to replicate the last six years of call ups with exact duplicates of those players over the next six years, I'd take the over at 550 losses.
  10. Your definition of being a fan is not my definition of being a fan, and I'd thank you not to try to impose your definition on me.
  11. The Twins have not added a key piece from the minors in six seasons. Horrific is a very fair term. uh...I would say Denard Span is a pretty key piece, and without Ben Revere I'm guessing we would have lost a lot more games the last two years. And while they may not have been key pieces every year they've been with the team, Blackburn, Slowey, and Perkins have all been critical parts of the team and various times. No, they haven't had any Mike Trouts or Stephen Strassbergs, but how many teams have? The Twins wouldn't have lost "a lot" more games without Joe Mauer, much less without a mediocre player like Ben Revere. These players might be the key to a AAA title run; in the majors, they are a group of unremarkable or worse ballplayers. That's why the Twins have lost 195 games in the last two seasons.

  13. Figures, the Twins can't even go outside the organization to find someone decent to sing a damn song.
  14. I've always loved the fact that the Twins' brass can come out and say the things that they have proven, time and again, to be completely in line with their philosophy, and people are still willing to believe that it is misdirection and duplicity. If Terry Ryan gave an interview stating that the Twins were considering drafting a low-ceiling control pitcher or a toolsy outfielder, we'd still have folks trying to convince everyone that he's trying to throw other front offices off the scent.
  15. The US portion of the map looks pretty much like this:
  16. Which, and how do you know? Correct answers: Which? -- those people who are voting illegally. How do I know? -- I know this because this is what they and more the 70% of the country have said they want. Who is voting illegally, how are they doing it, and how does requiring a government issued ID prohibit them from doing so? Seeing if someone is who they claim to be protects the one legal voter, one legal vote principle. Answer the question or don't quote me. Who is voting illegally, how are they doing it, and how does requiring a government issued ID prohibit them from doing so?

Are you in favor of requiring each person in this country to obtain a government issued identification card?
  18. I thought he only was into black guys.
  19. It's a thin line between pandering and representing.
  20. This has been a given for years now.
  21. Mauer should be behind the plate about 2-3 times a week as long as this team is not in contention. If this were a playoff team, they should be ramping up Mauer's catching to prepare him to start nearly every game in the playoffs behind the plate.
  22. Mauer is a fan favourite, but he ain't Kirby.
  23. Well, maybe not drill him, but they could throw a ball in his general direction.
  24. Risk what?
  25. Santana's case will never be similar to Koufax's.
