  1. Do you know if he had surgery? I know he was out all 2012 with elbow issues. Intriguing guy. Looks a bit like Matt Capps.
  2. Darn... Slowly the 2009 Draft is starting to look like a nightmare; from the first 15 picks only 5 are in the organization 3 seasons afterwards. And from those, one is just being converted from a C to a P.
  3. Buxton is too, and like Hicks he can throw 99 mph. Straight and FB and Slowball only. But High School kids cannot catch up to that. All OFs with strong arms can throw fast and straight. Does not mean that they project as Ps in pro ball.
  4. Add about 15-20 players from this draft class and you got a jam. Part of the issue is that the signing deadline moved up a month (7/13 this year) so a lot of the late signees would be able to play pro ball this season unlike past seasons. I would not be surprised to see teams field multiple GCL teams next season (like some do with the DSL now.) I do think that there will be a few cuts in New Britain and Rochester, and promotions (and a few trades that would probably work the other way) but I don't think that these would be quite enough to accommodate all players. Expect a lot of intersquad games and games with Boston and the Pirates in EST
  5. That does not work if you are a College Senior. Your last chance for pro ball (other than independents) other than being a free agent.
  6. For the ones here with twitter, here are the newest Twins with twitter accounts: @LBard38 @walkoff28 (Adam Walker II) @LJMazz24 @Dbax24 @trogers34 @Jproc23 @JarretLeverett Give them some serious Twins family love. BTW, I have been live blogging this thing and will do the same tomorrow. I got mini profiles for all 15 picks here if interested (reverse draft order)
  7. At this point they have to either sign or go back for their senior years hoping to jump up a round or 2. Could be a gamble for them. I think that they will eventually sign.
  8. Jose Fernandez is a 6'3" 165 lbs catcher who also plays CF and still growing. Would be interesting to see what happens to him. Committed to Alabama State, but could sign. I think some PR HS kids are signable at this point. maybe there is your third baseman
  9. About the relievers the Twins selected: (and Andre Martinez is a starter, if they can sign him) All but Chargois have started before and I suspect that at least 2-3 (Bard, Duffey, Zack Jones) would be converted into starters. Melotakis is an interesting situation. Lots like Corey Williams but with better FB. Could potentially start if he develops his secondary stuff better, but a lefty who hits 98 is a great commodity.
  10. I suspect that a certain SP from the U of MN is coming up soon for the Twins
  11. Good stuff. I think that High School arms (and bats) are unsignable now. JC and College only next.
  12. I cannot see how you rank an OF with decent tools ahead of a 2B with probably better tools
  13. Buxton is 4-5 years away. By then Span, if still around, would be past his prime and be close to gone.
  14. This is a good thing, if you trust the Twins' medical stuff. Based on the mis-diagnoses and mis-treatments within the organization, I am not sure that I trust them.
  15. Originally published at The Tenth Inning Stretch --- Here is this week's installment; and it is going to be slight, because of the Draft today and tomorrow: The Twins selected Byron Buxton (OF, HS), Jose Berrios (RHP, HS) and Luke Bard (RHB, College) in the 1st and supplemental rounds of the 2012 Rule 4 Draft. Today will be the second day of live-blogging the Twins Draft. You can find all coverage, including mini-profiles of the draftees here The Twins are now 13-7 in their last 20 games. This is good news. Former Twins' OF Lew Ford, 35, is hitting .397/.441/.619 with 3 HRs in 68 PAs with Baltimore's AAA club Norfolk Tides A few Minor league transaction notes: Daryl Thompson and Brad Thompson (AAA and AA) have been released. Bruce Pugh was promoted to AA New Britain from Fort Myers and newly signed St Paul Saints' closer Dan Sattler has been assigned to Fort Myers. The Twins' Dominican Summer League team saw action last Saturday. So this gives a fifth Twins' minor league team to pay attention to. Also, I updated the the Twins organization birthday list with the newest Twins who are playing the the DSL. 17. I think that he will be there tomorrow. The kid is academic and I am not sure that he will sign if they let him go past the second. But in most places (as I said before) he projects as a 3rd-4th rounder.
  18. Mitch Brown is a 3rd-4th round pick for most teams. The Twins have overvalued him because of proximity
  19. Especially now the way this is going, Brown is not on any other teams radar... I think he might be at #42. They should take a higher ranked pitcher at #32. Maybe a College kid
  20. I don't think that McCullers will be signable in the sup round. Speaking about signability, looks like Appel might elect to go back to College, there is some weirdness going on there because he is off-limits from the media per the Pirates. Interesting story to follow.
  21. I think Mitch Brown with #42 I think that they will take a P who slipped with #32, but if Clint Coulter © falls there too, they might have a choice to make
  22. Yes. Buxton seemed overwhelmed by the whole thing. Nothing to reflect against the Twins. The nice thing about the way this is going so far (and the Mets just picked as I am typing this) is that there is plenty of pitchers for the Twins to grab with #32 and #42. And I think it will be Mitch Brown at #42 as this is going. If someone like Marcus Stromen or Michael Wacha are still availiable at #32, that would be pretty incredible haul... We'll see
  23. Good pick. Here is my mini-profile on him with 3 videos.
  24. Whomever of Sano/Harrison is not at the OF
