  1. Carl Pavano is not a Twins pitcher. Shouldn't this be in the general baseball forum? I believe someone got scolded for posting their own thread about Perez when there was an article. I'd assume non-Twins related threads shouldn't clutter the already-busy Twins forum?
  2. Particularly when a team makes no effort to improve the positions through free agency or trades, either.
  3. I'd love to hear your definition of the word "athletic".
  4. Doubtful, since I'd wager that there have been few teams that have gone into a season with their rotation in as sad a state as the Twins' rotation is coming off of 2012.
  5. This is an excellent point, and you obviously have a very deep reserve of talent evaluation. Thank you for your brilliant insights.
  6. This is an excellent point, and the Twins are obviously as good top to bottom as every other team in the division. (Big Brother is watching, kids.)
  7. He's coming off TJS, and maybe will see some innings rehabbing late in the year. If he's being overlooked, it's because his best asset was his polish and the fact he should have moved rapidly through the system. Then he couldn't throw a strike to save his life, and spent the better part of a season trying to have the strike zone re-described to him, before a late year start last year where he delivered the coup de grace to his UCL. As a guy who didn't throw hard before getting hurt, he's going to need an excellent bouceback to even have a chance of being a back-of-the-rotation contributor to the MLB staff at some point in his career.
  8. Sure, in the sense that technically, the Twins would have to have someone pitch when those guys start against them.
  9. If Harden is both good and healthy by the deadline, it may be tough getting a deal done, what with the four hoursemen running roughshod over the world and all.
  10. Let's see if they can make the move to get Slowey back in the fold.
  11. And could give the fans a chance to see most of the bullpen pitchers if he gets lit up and goes 2.2 before getting the hook.
  12. I think most teams would shy away from fictional cartoonish caricatures of self-important athletes.
  13. Bullpen routine is completely different from starter routine. He's coming off of a major injury. The best thing that can happen to him this year is that he gets locked in his routine and gets his strength built back up with an eye towards the long term. Having him spend a chunk of the year not knowing if he's throwing that day, the next day, or whenever isn't useful in his buildup towards starting. Santana pitched out of the pen initially as a way to hide him on the roster. Then he spent the better part of the next two years relieving as well. That was his routine, and then he worked over to starting. Minus a few rehab outings, Gibson has been starting exclusively his whole career, and should remain on his starter's routine. Period. His 130, 150, or however many innings he throws this year aren't make or break for the Twins' 2013 fortunes, but keeping him healthy and progressing towards a full workload next year and beyond is certainly going to be a much bigger factor in their successes in those seasons.
  14. This line of thinking will likely come into play for the Twins this year, just not in the direction you're referring to.
  15. Probably, but THAT'S NOT WHAT THE POSTER WAS SAYING.
  16. If, as the poster posits, the main reason for the signing of contracts is "these guys won't make a fuss", the priorities for the team are insanely backwards.
  17. We get it. You don't like Hicks. That doesn't discount the fact that THREE players who got noteworthy amount of PAs put up a better OPS in a league that isn't a hitters' paradise. All three were a minimum of two years older than him. He also was 4th in SB and led the league in walks. That is a great performance across the board for a guy who didn't turn 23 until after the end of the season. To focus so much on his contact rate and power while overlooking top notch defense with a great arm and excellent plate discipline just shows that you're grasping at straws to downplay his season. Hicks isn't going to be a 30 HR guy, but he has double digit HR pop, which is more than can be said for the guys who have been manning CF for the Twins since Hunter departed. For someone who has been such a staunch Plouffe supporter, I would think you'd be more excited by a breakout season from a toolsy player. (The kind of season Plouffe never actually put up, yet you continued championing his cause throughout.)
  18. From what I recall it's an average to slightly above average for right field. Not Hicks, but not Revere, either. Similar to the description Kubel's arm got on his way through the system. (Much like most of Arcia's tools.)
  19. 4th best OPS in the freaking Eastern League and a plus defender. Yeah, that's a step beyond just "good".
  20. It is kind of suspicious that that vote claimed the Twins did some "pretty darn good executiveing" this offseason. Hmmm...
  21. So, the team preference is unquestioning drones. Sounds like a fun locker room to hang out in.
  22. Wimmers' main selling point was that he could go the Mike Leake route and see the bigs in short order. He was a polished guy with a low ceiling, but a high floor. Then that floor collapsed when he got Memento disease and couldn't recall the description of the strike zone. Now he's coming off TJS. I'd say expectations for him should be pretty minimal by now.
  23. I'm not sure TD has ratified suffrage for your kind in these polls just yet.
  24. Yes, they don't work out most of the time, but you have to pay top dollar to get superstars, and Santana was the best pitcher in the league at the time. Injuries happen, and Santana had an exceptionally unfortunate rash of them since he moved. If you let every player go when they need to get paid, you will be able to look at the vast majority of them at some point and say "boy, I'm glad we didn't pay him". Doesn't mean that you shouldn't ante up and overpay at some point if you want to try and have premium talent long-term and not just a revolving door of arbitration guys with one foot out the door when free agency is within sight.
  25. So they re-signed Morneau to a $13M-a-year deal in the same offseason they opted to not pay top dollar to retain Santana and Hunter. But hey, those guys weren't "fan favorites" or anything. That's locking up one cheaper asset while letting two go due to money. That's not "big market" thinking, that's a prototypical example of mid-market thinking.
