  1. That is significantly more than a "little bit" better than Hicks' best year.
  2. Oh, I know the feeling. When I coached (and by doing so, often umped) my hometown summer baseball teams, there was no shortage of those games, from peewee games up to Legion. The field got nicknamed "The Pit" because it was half surrounded by a stadium-seating-like hill which seemed to funnel the heat downward. Regularly upwards of 105 on the sand. Not great times.
  3. From when he was named the top defensive 1B in the Eastern League waaaay back in 2011.
  4. It does, because it's an average over any number of innings. Starters generally don't go 9 IP, either. Maybe make their stat K/5.2 IP? It isn't "K per outing", it's "K per 9 innings" because that's the arbitrary length they decided games should be over a century ago. Take it up with MLB if you think it's an injustice to the statistical integrity of the game. Maybe they can go to a fixed game clock instead of innings and keep track of per game stats that way.
  5. Parmelee is by all accounts an excellent defensive first baseman. He's only a RF because of Morneau being on the team. And with all these giant questions marks you just listed without even touching on the starting rotation, how exactly will this "core" be in the thick of contention next year?
  6. 25% higher. How much higher is $18M?
  7. Because the reality of the rebuilding effort is just that: reality. Willingham certainly isn't going to be a part of the next Twins contender. Morneau may be if he re-signs, but if he's likely to be out the door at the end of the year, better to get something for him. Or if what you're saying is that the Twins should go all in to win this year, I'd like a bit of whatever it is you happen to be ingesting these days, because that just isn't happening.
  8. And why would Hunter's target be anywhere near the same level as JD Drew? Hunter was a Gold Glove defender at an up the middle position who could actually hit. Drew was a corner outfielder. If he told his agent "go get me the same deal as JD Drew", he'd be an idiot, as evidenced by the fact that he got significantly more.
  9. Which is strange, since Ryan was the one who offered him the lowball offer during the 2007 season.
  10. As memory serves, the Twins offer was for both less money and years.
  11. It's a ratio. If it bugs you that much, you can go through the arduous mental gymnastics of dividing it by 9.
  12. Nobody said it was ironclad, but his numbers would lead you to believe he deserves a shot to prove it one way or another instead of becoming the Van Wilder of the Rochester Red Wings.
  13. I just don't get how a team can use Jeff Gray in nearly 1/3 of its games in a lost season when someone with Slama's numbers is sitting in Rochester waiting to get an extended look.
  14. It would surprise me. I think the "Swarzak as MLB starter" experiment has run its course.
  15. I'm still beyond baffled why, after 3+ years in AAA with excellent performance, he hasn't ever gotten a fair chance at an MLB bullpen spot.
  16. Generally, no. The position requires the largest toolset among the defensive positions. Top notch reflexes, range, and arm are all pretty much requirements for the position, while many positions can skimp on at least one of those. It's just a natural tendency to have the best athlete playing short at lesser levels of competition due to the higher physical demands.
  17. Is it "admitting mistakes" or simply "listing all the Twins' moves in the middle infield"?
  18. On the assumption the Twins either don't bother to give chronically injured guys medicals exams, or that they'd miss a huge shoulder injury when they did perform one?
  19. No. He wanted more than the #1 pick got last year. He'll absolutely want more than that this this year.
  20. Now who's being a **** and not adding to the conversation?
  21. There's no way Dan is hip enough to own a Melvins shirt.
  22. And yet every single one of those teams that weren't the Twins managed to make it past the Divisional series. Weird.
  23. Obviously there's lots of non-baseball jobs that will offer him $5M before he works a day for them.
  24. So which is it, "the Boras thing is overblown", or "take him and if he doesn't like it, he can go to the Indy league"?
  25. Until you factor in the draft pool limitations. If Boras/Appel are asking for the moon again, you're risking either killing your flexibility for the rest of your signings, or punting the pick until the following year.
