  1. I'm assuming, of course, that your young child is not home alone and would be awaiting you picking them up from day care or wherever on your way home from work.
  2. Exactly 20 years my senior. Always enjoyed finding those guys who I shared a birthday with when I was younger collecting sports cards, and Harper was kind enough to send me one card signed back in a birthday card when I was probably 10-11 years old and sent him a baseball card in the mail to sign.
  3. Okay, and do you punish your children by not allowing them to watch the game of their favorite team if they're a Red Sox fan because their favorite team starts their games before you're home from school/work/etc.? I think part of the issue is that so much of the worry is "whatever will the East Coast fans do with such a late game?!" when the consideration is never given the other direction. A good friend of mine moved out to San Diego and was already a Chargers fan. He got season tickets and proudly claimed he had watched every snap of every game until this season - when the NFL scheduled the Charges for an east coast game on a Sunday when he would be in church with his family, at 9am. No one seems to worry the other direction.
  4. Or the NHL conflict has been there for decades and really isn't that big of a deal. The NHL starts in early October (typically in single season days of October), and the MLB playoffs have never been completed in single-digit days in October. In fact, I did not look at every single season, but I did random season selection all the way back to 1900 and found not one single season ending before double-digit October days, even before playoffs or the World Series existed.
  5. Always Cubs if the Braves and Twins are out. I'm a baseball fan because of a woman who bled Cubbie blue her whole life, and I'm sure she and Harry Carey have been sharing a bowl of popcorn during each game of the postseason from their eternal viewing spots.
  6. So here's my question. Being in the middle of SoDak, where would I end up as a member? I've attempted to grasp that in a quick glance on the SABR website a time or two, but never was completely sure of the answer, and I've never joined due to that.
  7. To continue on my point, I was actually considering the Jackie Robinson/Obama consideration as well when I made the comparison as well. Was Jackie Robinson the best player of color at the time he broke the color line? No. Was Obama the most qualified candidate of color? Is Hillary the most qualified candidate of gender? I'd say no on all these, but I think in each case, you have someone who could handle the issues with derogatory statements and behavior just because of their gender or race and not their actual performance at their job with grace and levity. Obama has shown that in his presidency to me.
  8. I will say while I won't vote for her BECAUSE she's a woman, I do believe that much like Jackie Robinson was the right person to break the color barrier because of his ability to handle the criticism that would be levied to him, I do believe Hillary will be able to handle the undue comments and criticism that being the first of a gender or a race to break ground will always endure. Once again, I'm not going to vote for any person SOLELY based on that reason, but I do think that it should come into consideration when considering a person that would the first of his/her race or gender to trail blaze an office, after you've examined the issues, of course.
  9. Michelle Obama making a speech today that was tremendous. That is all I'll say on that. Trump's line today about the women coming forward: "Just look at them, c'mon..." Wow.
  10. Oh, absolutely. I'm not ripping on Netflix stuff as I see they're still in infancy and establishing those characters. Killing off a major character has nearly no impact in season one, but that same character surviving three or four seasons with the focus of the series and suddenly being lost is a significant thing for the audience to grasp and for the show to process. Heck, Arrow is referencing the loss of a major character in every episode so far this season.
  11. Funny thing is that I'd hit any one of those three towns depending on the route I chose to take from home to the Twin Cities.
  12. One thing I will give shows like Flash and Arrow is that while they don't kill off the main guy (and obviously that wouldn't work so well), they do have the guts to kill off big time characters in the show.
  13. I'm having to weigh this. My writing is taking off, I'm in a job transition for the day job, we have a foster baby at the moment and are likely going to be a frequent host for foster kids, and frankly, this would be dynasty #5 for me now, as I've started up 2 more after dropping this one. I'm also in a renewing single-season league with friends and a pair of keeper leagues. I very much wanted to keep the fantasy leagues in any single sport under double digits going forward (which is a drastic reduction for me).
  14. And the Twins had valid reasons to be optimistic for 2016. It took essentially the entire starting rotation and closer going down with injury along with major stagnation in the development of prospects in order to achieve 2016, none of which could have been seen. The Braves have set themselves up very well for a .500 season next year with their tremendous prospect depth at AA/AAA right now to fill in any needs on the major league club. It wouldn't surprise me to see them make a run at a guy like Quintana/Sale/Archer, perhaps not getting any of them, but their prospect options in the system would drive up the price for whomever does acquire them to astronomical levels.
  15. I am more and more excited by Dunn every time I see highlights of him. I haven't had a chance to watch him in game yet, but everything I read and all the NBA guys I trust absolutely rave about him.
  16. The bigger intriguing thing is that Ron Washington is brought in as third base coach, and reportedly, Bud Black was offered the pitching coach job as well.
  17. That's how Republicans have been campaigning since a guy with dark skin got in the office. "Can you believe what that guy put into law?! He/she is part of his party! You don't want to support that, so vote for me!" I know because our useless Rep in SD had no other campaign message.
  18. Yeah, I liked the characters that were present. I don't disagree that the villain wasn't great compared to other Marvel series, but it was essentially the "origin" series for taking his story a lot of different directions from here.
  19. I was not only referring to that last play. There were PI calls on the day with much less contact. There were plays with more contact not called. It's just crappy that inconsistent calls can influence the games the way they do. I have no assumptions the final play would have been called, though it typically is due to contact before looking for the ball. The issue is that lesser contact was called on a crucial 3rd and long on one of Iowa's FG drives, and both were going for the ball with equal right to it where the ball ended up thrown. Both teams wanted badly to lose yesterday, though. The Gophers just had more desire!
  20. So, seriously, what is defensive pass interference? It was called on plays that seemed like it shouldn't have been and not called on plays it should have been. I don't get it. At least the bad officiating on catches can be overturned by replay (as in the final drive), but you can't protest a penalty being called or not.
  21. I'll clarify. The interview where Shulman was talking about working with Mendoza was on the Jonah Keri podcast if anyone is looking for it.
  22. Mendoza has received compliments from Olney, Law, and everyone else involved with ESPN with her work since being hired. However, what really caught my eye (or ear, rather) was listening to Dan Shulman, the excellent play by play guy with ESPN radio and sometimes ESPN TV. He talked about how he and Mendoza have worked together through the year and how open she is to criticism from her peers in trying to be the best she can at her job. That's impressive to me. She's not just trying to coast now that she has the job - she's actually trying to be as good as she possibly can at it. She is not truly providing the "former player" angle. She provides the player analysis while providing insight as to why certain movements feel awkward to players. Her breakdown of the change in Jason Heyward's swing over his career was impressive during a Cubs Sunday night game this year. That's her specialty, and in that modality, she's excellent. However, hearing a high-pitched tone delivering certain words will always disturb some ears. I remember the first time I sat with guys listening to a female broadcast a football game. She was tremendous in her football knowledge and did not miss a single cue, even catching line stuff that no guy watching the game with me caught, yet at nearly every break of the game, the guys were complaining about her presence in the broadcast.
  23. It was a movie I really enjoyed due to the baseball tie in to the movie, so that's why I watched it more than once...otherwise, I'd not likely have even remembered it! LOL!!
  24. Part of that is a level of prestige assumed with MLB baseball. A number of players have already taken the route of going through Japanese baseball or Australian baseball for better pay. As other foreign leagues offer better than the minor leagues for lesser draft picks, some guys will head there. There still are plenty that will keep taking less because they believe the route to MLB is through the minor leagues, but ask Alfonso Soriano how going the unconventional route worked. More guys could go there and force MLB's hand.
  25. Frequency is just a series based on the premise of a movie from a late-90s/early-2000s movie that starred Jim Caviezel (sp?), the man who would later portray Jesus in Passion of the Christ. I rather lost interest quickly just because I knew the premise of the show already.
