  1. Crap, had Ebert on the last cuts this year.
  2. Brock, this is why I will always be a Braves fan from the north. I had a teammate in college who was from Mississippi. We're lifting one day, and I notice a gash in his upper side, just under his arm. I ask him about it, and apparently, he and a white girl fell for one another, went on a few dates, and on one, they were spotted by the regional leader of the KKK. They had strung a 16 year-old boy up from a tree by his arms and started to cut him open from his armpits on down his side when a group of police caught wind and went outside of their jurisdiction in order to flash their lights and make them stop. The people who took a teen boy and strung him up to spill his guts on the ground just for taking out a white girl avoided all prosecution because the responding officers left their jurisdiction to save his life without notifying the officers in the proper jurisdiction first. That's not something from 1955, that's from 1996, and crap like that still happens. It's sickening.
  3. This was my thought, though my brother was told that he'd get an "upper echelon" job this year by people he was working with from ESPN during the Summit League tourney.
  4. That 100% depends on your circle in baseball. Most NL fans would be very quick to tell you that Posey is a fairly average catcher back there, and national pundits still praise Mauer's athleticism behind the plate after all his injury struggles, so I'm not sure it's "worth noting" as accepted fact, certainly.
  5. I heard a piece of the first one. Law is incredibly intelligent, and I love that about him, but something about his voice is just nails on a chalkboard for me, so that much of his voice is a bad thing in my view.
  6. Yikes, this is the "more baseball" area. No need to be current-team focused around these parts, heck, no need to be Twins-focused around these parts. Certainly no reason to come down on someone for remembering a former member of the organization and his life happenings since leaving.
  7. Verlander Lee Darvish Matt Moore Adam Wainwright Jon Lester Shoot for the moon with that list!
  8. I listen to a ton of podcasts while I work out, and some of my favorite baseball ones are the new Baseball Tonight podcast with Buster Olney, Effectively Wild and Towers of Power from Baseball Prospectus, and Baseball America's podcast. I also listen to the ESPN fantasy podcasts as well. My podcast list is in the 20s overall, though most are sports.
  9. Wanting wins does not equal wanting bowl games. Pure and simple. Kill has not had 4 cupcakes yet, but you can continue down that road if you like.
  10. Nowhere did I say "equal", I said "same level of competition". That's a big difference. Once again, your assumption about Kill's reasoning for the early season schedule is simply incorrect. Bowl games do not factor into his consideration with the non-conference schedule. The Gophers play in a traditional power conference, so they are getting plenty of "tune-up" games for 3/4 of their schedule. Measuring by the almighty bowl game metric, the Gophers played against (and beat) a very solid Syracuse team this year. This year Syracuse was the only non-conference foe to make a bowl game, but there were multiple Big Ten opponents who did not make a bowl game. There was also one non-conference team coming off of a bowl season.
  11. You are entitled to your opinion. It's not as if they're scheduling Bemidji State or something, Kill has expressed a desire not to play a single FCS school if possible, but some local schools (North Dakota State, South Dakota State) are scheduled for local draw as much as anything. They're scheduling FBS schools that have every opportunity to play in a BCS bowl game. Same level of competition, but just not a member of a BCS conference. I've been an advocate of the program for well over a decade after ending my playing there, and I can tell you that there has never been a coach that has generated the same good will among alumni and former players/coaches as Kill has. Recruiting class ranks mean very little if you're recruiting to a system. Years ago, a spread team would get ripped for recruiting mid-tier guys and having poor recruiting ranks. Now the systems have turned to favor a spread approach, so those same skillset players are more highly rated, which alters how rankings appear. He's only got one recruit so far for the 2014 class committed, but it's a four-star (via scout.com), top-20 RB and an in-state talent. His 2013 class doesn't have headline guys, but it's deep with 8 3-star guys, including a load of size up front on both sides of the ball. You're on a Twins forum, supporting a team that has lost 60% of its games the last two seasons after being in competition for the top record in the league in 2010, but a coach taking over a complete mess of a program that's won at the same rate is blasted.
  12. You used a perfect analogy - boxers build up slowly as they establish themselves against better and better competition. You don't walk into the early 90s boxing scene and immediately start battling Tyson and Holyfield. You have to earn your way up, bout by bout, until you've shown yourself worthy of the established top competition.
  13. Also factor in that the Braves have had some solid success vs. Lee, and your decision is very easy.
  14. To build the team through success in those non-conference games. Yes, he wanted wins in those games, but the goal of that would not be a bowl game. It would be to get the team ready to win.
  15. Complete bull. Kill has been advocating for a playoff system for years, and he has said that he will not measure the team by bowl appearances or even bowl victories, so that assumption is way, way off. Northern Illinois never got the 5-star recruit either, but he built a program there that won against BCS teams year-in and year-out, including demolishing the Brewster team laden with two top-5 Big Ten recruiting classes.
  16. Except that it had nothing to do with UNC. It had to do with scheduling mid-major schools until he felt he had time to build the program to a time of all BCS pre-conference games. I honestly don't have a big problem with that. The person he is and the accountability and attitude he's brought to the program is all I can ask from a coach. I played under a coach way too worried about public perception, and that's when you stop focusing your attention where it should always be - on the field.
  17. Duly noted. Thank you for your well thought-out and pointed argument.
  18. I was intrigued by the movie for the simple reason that it'd be interesting to see the Disney girls involved in a more "adult" role.
  19. He's going to bat 2nd in a loaded lineup, and he's become the team leader off the field with the loss of Chipper, David Ross, and Eric Hinske, the three leaders of the team in 2012. I'm not sure that he'll put up MVP numbers because of his role in the lineup, but I could see him going for a much improved average (>.300), 25+ HR, 100 R/RBI, and 20+ SB.
  20. The Cards don't get the 17th pick, however. The Brewers only lose it.
  21. I was excited initially about Brewster's recruiting acumen, but his coaching never took hold. Coach Mason always seemed to have a chip on his shoulder and under-recruited to show how great a coach he was. Coach Wacker was solid, but seemed to lack that killer instinct. Time will show once Kill has the players to fit his system, but he is incredibly well-thought-of within national circles. I was told by one former Ohio State player that he would have been a big fan of Kill being hired there, which says volumes about his respect in the game.
  22. He's still using Brewster players. MarQueis Gray was Brewster's big time recruit in his time. For what Kill has brought to the program, I'll take last season as he's continuing to build the team. I am extremely happy with what he's brought to the program, especially in the crappy shape it was left.
  23. And he would deserve every single penny of it.
  24. See, this is where coming to a Twins site for the 'net friends you made years ago and not really reading the Twins info means you end up missing what ends up irking the community. I view the Twins stuff, but I'd much rather discuss the game as a whole, and my favorite region of the old BYTO is now the Sports Bar region of things, so I spend most of my time there. I don't know what erupted, but I've had my stuff with Fro in the past, and it has never been over personal attacks. It's been when I started getting my emotions too into something and ignoring straight facts. That policing always forced me to be more thoughtful about my posts and not let emotion rule the day. Heck, I was hit pretty hard when I spoke against the former first baseman this offseason, but I'm guessing not a single warning went out there to someone bashing my opinion on the topic. I get offended when someone thinks the man was a hero, and I know I'd never want my child emulating him on or off the field. Does that mean someone should get banned for offending me? Heck no! I presented evidence to why I felt the way I did, and let it sit. You end up forcing yourself to become a more level poster who can anticipate the hook rather than constantly jabbing.
  25. That's interesting as the two mocks I did through that site, he was a 9th and 10th round pick.
