  1. Years are absolutely ridiculous for the tread on his legs.
  2. It was rumored hard over the weekend, but I didn't want to believe it.
  3. Braves traded Jordan Walden and Jason Heyward to the Cardinals for Shelby Miller and Tyrell Jenkins. Incredible deal. I'm not a fan of Miller, personally. I honestly would have rather seen Carlos Martinez than Miller, but very interesting pair of deals with the weekend deal of Tommy La Stella to the Cubs for Arodys Vizcaino and bonus slots. This is the type of deal Hart made in Cleveland with Justice/Grissom for Lofton/Embree. I hope this turns into the former side of that deal rather than the latter.
  4. And say what you want about results...this is the biggest change I've seen in this team. They simply haven't given up in a single game I've watched.
  5. No discussion about this since the news came out, but the reports came out this week on his toxicology report, and he was roughly at a 0.29 BAC, three and a half times the legal limit in most US states. Horrible to have yet another promising young life (two, in this case) ended by drunk driving...
  6. There are different methods to creating a successful franchise. I rather like the Tigers one if you have an owner wiling to take on the financial losses associated with going all-in each season. The biggest thing is that they don't see anyone as untradeable. The Minnesota market, for all it's criticisms of him, would erupt in anger if the Twins traded away Mauer, likely regardless of the return. The Tigers just traded away their Gold Glove quality center fielder who had been their leadoff hitter during their recent run in order to acquire another starter that only has 2015 left on his contract. Jackson was a huge fan favorite in Detroit, but I rather enjoy that the front office is willing to upset the fanbase for an opportunity to win it all.
  7. Lot of chatter on the Braves forums/blogs/beat writers about a ST invite with a minor league deal on Zito with the Braves' need for a guy to simply chew up innings in their rotation. Perhaps even could be this year's Aaron Harang for them.
  8. Hellickson will be an interesting case study into the "Tampa way" affecting a pitcher. He had strand rates so far out of line with norms before his poor pre-injury season that it was the focus of numerous Fangraphs and Baseball Prospectus articles. Going to a home run haven rather than spacious Tropicana along with a team that isn't horrid defensively, but still doesn't maximize their defense in the same way Tampa does, could be very interesting. As far as stuff, he's probably more similar to Kevin Slowey than most baseball pundits would like to admit, but he has a little bit of deception in his delivery to the plate that helps him outside of the incredible strand rates that he saw before his horrid pre-injury year. An interesting tidbit...Tampa's been vaunted as player development gurus and all tat, but these two guys, middle of the top 15-20 list for Arizona, will certainly be top 10 guys in Tampa as their farm system is definitely bottom 10 and could be argued as bottom 5. Friedman and Maddon may have seen the impeding doom and got out at the right time.
  9. Had a chance at the end, which is better than pretty much anyone would have predicted preseason for the Gophers, but this was not a well-played game by Leidner or the Gopher defense. Hopefully both bounce back next week.
  10. It is to the Mets. This is simply how they do business.
  11. Except their bullpen is more akin to Hunter Strickland than Wade Davis (if we're using postseason references), so they'd need to dump a ton of money or have a lot of arms take big steps forward.
  12. Comp picks started about 30 last year. As more teams sign someone and give up their pick, those comp picks move earlier and earlier in the draft.
  13. Cuddy was really worth his money one year of his three in Colorado, and he's not getting younger. I'm not cheering against him or anything, but I'm certainly not putting any money on him in favor of him outperforming his deal.
  14. Wisconsin and Nebraska have started a trophy for their future games. http://www.uwbadgers.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/111014aab.html
  15. I'm so excited to have the Mets continue to make moves like this. They're now rumored to be after Tulowitzki. Over/Under 20 games with all three of Wright/Cuddyer/Tulo in the lineup?
  16. There's not a single reason for the TWolves to be going 10+ deep all season to see how combinations work with Wiggins/Lavine/Bennett/etc. that will make up the future of the team.
  17. My hopes for the Wolves were neither increased nor decreased on Rubio's injury. He's not an elite player that cannot be replaced to an adequate degree, especially by a more-than-capable backup like Williams.
  18. Colorado gets a compensation pick, not the 15th pick. The 15th pick is simply forfeited.
  19. Movie producers understand something that Fox/MLB hasn't figured out yet - no one in their right mind would voluntarily watch something with Joe Buck announcing. That same alternate scene you mention with challenges and Vin Scully working the broadcast booth during the review - sign me up 10 times out of 10.
  20. And of the Mays/Mantle/Aaron guys who used "Greenies" and all sorts of other drugs, legal and otherwise, to continue playing, but had it covered up because of their star power?
  21. I was actually in the cities this weekend, but sadly at a funeral rather than the game. I checked on the score in between the service and the luncheon, and I had about a half dozen people ask me the score. Thorough trouncing of the Hawkeyes in one of the two games that matter all season (seriously, if they won 2 games all year, and those two games were over Iowa and Wisconsin, I'd be overjoyed!). Leidner looked composed in the pocket, and the jet sweep really made a big difference. I was hoping for .500 the month of November, but I didn't think a single game would have the Gophers scoring 50 and the opposition scoring a meaningless junktime touchdown just to hit double figures on the scoreboard. I might even be pleasantly surprised this month. I sure hope I am!
  22. Clock is already in the rule book. There is a 12-second time that the pitcher has to deliver a pitch that is not being enforced, but it's already in the rule book.
  23. But his accomplishments were tainted because he didn't play all the best players, and he was very in favor of that exclusion. He was also a cheater that retired rather than facing his cheating. How is A-Rod worse than Cobb? People rant about Cobb's on field accomplishments and put his off-field stuff to the side, even when it directly affected the game, but A-Rod's stuff is blended on and off field. Just a different era that doesn't do anywhere near as well separating.
  24. Then you'd be misinformed on history. Watch Ken Burns' film about how there was intentional removal of Latin and Native American players who looked too "black" due to the racism of the time. It's a pretty dark (no pun intended) time in baseball's history, and Cobb was a very outspoken, media-conscious critic of allowing any African Americans in the game or even playing on the same field with them in barnstorming games (something even Babe Ruth did in the early 1920s). Cobb refused to attend baseball games where there were African Americans on the field until the 1950s, when (after a cancer diagnosis) suddenly he reversed course. Cobb and Tris Speaker are also widely believed to have retired at the same time to avoid a game-fixing scandal that would have banned them if it went public. Speaker admitted to the game-fixing with Cobb as one of his cohorts, but Cobb refused to ever acknowledge it.
  25. No advantage, except not playing against a large number of the best players in the game because he was such a powerful voice in the game that his absolute refusal to even be on the field with black players influenced the game's dragging its feet on the issue.
