  1. I would agree he was for the first part of the year, but he ended badly.... and has wore down at the end of seasons often. The next step is repeating what he did in 2019, for the whole 2020 season. He is a great pitcher, much better than Keith Law ever said he'd be. I also view Ace pitchers as consistently reliable year to year. Some guys lie Gibson can break through and have a great year, but can't be expected to repeat the success. Shoot... Martin Perez was great the first part of the year and completely fell apart. That said, Berrios is close, and we could be calling him the Ace next year.
  2. 8-9 years ago? Yeah I remember, Cuddyer played 17 games at 2b during the same time.... You say size and speed, I say athletic ability. Just because he CAN play 3b, doesn't mean he should. Move him to 1b where his defensive shortcomings can be hidden.
  3. Why is anyone comparing Sano to Plouffe or Koskie? Plouffe was a converted SS in which his best year he was considered an average 3b. Yes, Plouffe got better after 26, but he also was much more athletic build. Koskie was already a good defender at 26... and again, more athletic build. Sano is not going to get much better, and more likely will get worse. If 1b is too tough for him to play, put him at DH. The most likely option is Lewis at 3b. I'd be very surprised if he doesn't get time there next year.
  4. Gophers win again. 4 time cancer survivor Casey O'Brien gets in the game. Hard not to appreciate these types of things that Fleck does. Gophers look poised to meet Penn State in a few weeks, for possibly the biggest game for the program in years.
  5. That was the exact method used by the prior brass, and it resulted in the most inept playoff streak in sports. Nobody is championing trying to mirror the Astros, but taking notes from how a great roster is put together is a good thing. Buy, sell, trade, and draft. Can't win without all coming together.
  6. SHOULD they bring back Jerry Ryan too? Sounds like sour grapes to me.
  7. I would love a successful boom and bust strategy. Sign me up to win a few world series every 10 years.
  8. Brian, I don't fully agree. Baseball is fickle. All teams try to fix flaws and develop talent. Some are better than others. The crucial component is identifying IF you can fix a guy and IF someone has the talent to be a big league player. That is why the decision makers get paid big money.
  9. Talent evaluation, whether in the draft, trades or FA, is always at the heart of a successful team. You can't win without talent. Part of the criticism for Ryan was his drafting strategy. Guy like Gibson, Swarzak, Blackburn were the rule. Shoot, even Berrios was controversial (but turned out well). It is hard to identify Ace talent. We were led to believe that Stewart was that guy, and Jay could be that guy. Both were immediately exposed in the minor leagues. Now we have Romero and Graterol.... I'm not holding my breath on drafting an Ace pitcher anytime soon. Predicting one seems to be the most difficult talent evaluation in all of professional sports (maybe QB a close second, but think that has to do more with drafting techniques and front office decisions).
  10. Houston made savvy moves, and now they're the best team in mlb. Hard to be "the next" Houston, when Houston is still doing Houston things. The rise of Houston has as much to do with the cards falling in their favor as their approach. Long have some of us on this forum, including Jack Goin, championed for an analytics approach. Terry Ryan was cemented in old school baseball. I think the entire league is changing as big data has become a huge narrative. In order to be the next up and coming team, Twins need more top end talent. Houston is a great example: they have top 10 players in mlb at multiple positions, some arguably the best. That doesn't happen overnight. Hopefully they Twins can identify their own Cole and Verlander acquisitions this off-season. Add Royce Lewis and Alex Kirilloff the mix, and this team is positioned to compete again.
  11. Or... The mlb feared the Twins lineup so much they had to change the balls. Don't underestimate how much everyone hates the twins.
  12. Really nice Nebraska fans? You lucked out. I put Nebraska fans right up there with Wisconsin fans. Amazing to me how much more loyal the fan base is for both those programs.
  13. I'm so glad Nebraska is terrible. I doubt the program will ever get back to what they were. Such a joke they were ranked pre season. Gophers should be consensus top 25 next week.
  14. So.... On more than one occasion I was astonished a fly ball was easily caught in the twins Yankee series. Not just twins either... An altered ball would change the entire game, not just home runs. Twins should dive into this.... and sue for lost wages if they think they can prove it. After watching the division series, an altered ball would explain a lot.
  15. Morgan has easily been the best QB since Asad... and he's probably better than Asad. You can argue Weber was better than Asad, but Weber never won anything. He is the first legit big ten qb since Weber, and has already beaten Wisconsin once. I like his poise, good decisions, ball placement, and aggressiveness. Hopefully he continues to get better and win big games.
  16. Gophers won again today. Looked pretty solid for the most part. Morgan made some mistakes, but Illinois just couldn't match up. A few more wins and it'll be time to shut Penn State up.
  17. It hasn't sent the message the last 4 times the twins have been swept, I doubt this will be any different.
  18. Did you have a better idea than Dobnak? Before the baseball forum was so crowded, I have repeatedly said you can't win in the postseason without an Ace. I was hopeful the twins could put together a few wins against the Yankees, but wasn't expecting a series win. The starting pitching needs to be better, at least getting deep into games, in order to win playoff baseball. Luckily, I think this experience will be helpful for this core going forward. I still hope they can win Monday at home... Heck, I still hope they pull out the series win. I'm just a realist that knows baseball is hard.
  19. Has the roster been set yet? Feel a lot better about this team than past teams. As long as the starters can get through 5-6 innings, this team will always have a chance. No more Mo Rivera to contend with.
  20. Yeah, the 99 yard drive is dumb. After the second score the gophers did drive 47 yards and chew up the rest of the clock. 38-17 in the fourth quarter is dominating pretty good. They haven't been in that position before.
  21. I didn't watch the end, but my brother says the score is closer than the game was. Purdue scored, got an onside kick, and scored again.
  22. I think an 8 win season would be palatable. The offense has talent to compete with anyone in the big ten, the defense not so much.
  23. I watched and listened. Surprised Purdue was able to make it competitive at the end... stopped watching by then. This passing game is the most explosive I've ever seen a gopher team. Morgan is also pretty darn good. He has great accuracy and doesn't throw into trouble. Now that Brooks and Smith are back, this is a dangerous offense. The defense concerns me. Talent at LB and DL look weak. In fact, outside of Winfield... this defense isn't very good. So far they've bent but not been broken. Won't get away with that against Iowa or Wisconsin (both overrated, but better than Purdue).
  24. I didn't get to watch... but it looks like Morgan is pretty efficient. With Bateman and Johnson, why aren't they destroying defenses? When they had to score seems like they could. Without seeing the game it is hard to know why the offense isn't more explosive.
