  1. I was able to read it at work; and I agree, a very measured and sober take, even if a bit abstract.
  2. This opinion piece by Omar is behind the WP paywall, but it looks to be worth a look for those that can.
  3. I think you're just making up the reasons the they should assimilate as you go along. When violence didn't convince anyone, you went to: but they get handouts. The conflation of immigrant and refugee is also pretty disturbing.
  4. So now its not that they are violent but that they are living off the government? Is this even true in regard to immigrants? (Refugees may get some assistance, but I thought happened more in terms of subsidizing their jobs).
  5. Well, that is my larger point, and used the white-male mass-murder thing, as an example of that assimilation won't save us from violence...
  6. It was in reply to your blanked statement jihad/Islam/assimilation to show how faulty blanket statements are. I don't think there's anything about maleness or whiteness or consertiveness that makes for violence, even though they happen to be ones carrying out most mass murder. We might be able to carve sections of white/male/conservative such as supremacist who are violent, just like we can make the same carve out among Muslims who believe in jihad.
  7. It may not be analogous, but it's something to keep in mind when we ask a group to assimilate away from their own culture b/c that culture might have more violent imperative. There's plenty violent already about American identity, that I think calls for assimilation based on some supposed threat are made in bad faith.
  8. Assimilate to what? White values? Christian values? And what does that mean, give up their religion, their head gear? Start eating pork? The whole notion of assimilation kind of makes me nauseous.
  9. Well you do see white conservative males murder people by the dozens, do you color all white conservative males with that same brush? Or does that kind of thinking only apply to Muslims?
  10. A refuge carved out of the offending countries. I can think of a few better countries than Palestine.
  11. The result of clicking Ben's link is rather hilarious, though.
  12. When they signed Pérez for as much money as they did, and with the rumors of other teams being interested, I thought the Twins had probably identified an obvious mechanical flaw, that perhaps other teams identified as well. Whether or not he can put that into action, and be consistent with that approach remains to be seen, but the increase in velocity itself demonstrates some success already. Encouraging.
  13. That's fair. But your if we rained muffins nothing would change slogan is disingenuous, stopping settlement would be meaningful step, and one worth taking. As long as the Israels continue to dilute the Palestinian population through settlement, I won't shed one tear for them. Imagine if we were actively, moving white people on to Reservations (as crappy as that land is); do you think it would go over well among the Native Americans. It's one thing to say that the formation of Israel was so long ago, but it's another to ignore that the Israels are actively working against two-state solution through settlement. It's not unlike what China has done to Tibet.
  14. Congrats, Ben!
  15. Not really honestly. Especially if you can use Native American genocide as some part of pro-Israel argument. Yes, violent Palestinians are awful. But the whole concept of Israel is unethical and just like Native American reservations. That people respond violently to unethical treatment is an obvious consequence. Maybe Israel should stop settlements, before crying the victim.
  16. Maybe not, but Russia, of course, is their major threat, and they don't make their intentions known. Ukraine has a good case, but isn't a NATO nation, of course. The carve out of Israel after WWII just seems so insane to me. And it's a price, we'll keep paying I guess for perpetuity...
  17. So in your irl reality, we just let Israel do whatever it wants, and keep giving our support?
  18. In a way, we are enabling that tenuous relationship, including settlement. I don't mind having a relationship with Israel including both monetary and military aid, but that should come with the price of not shaking the hornet's nest that is the middle east.
  19. Do they need us any more than, say, any NATO country?
  20. I think in past election cycles you'd be absolutely right, but "Medicare for All", just as a label is widely popular (though when you break down the actual policy each piece of it is less popular). That Obama didn't get a public option the first time around is a stain on his legacy. I'm tired of half-measures. If we use the public-option to grand father in, Medicare for All over a few years, that's fine. However, I think running on the public option inspires no one, and won't at all motivate the base, much less bring more people in.
  21. I just don't think that will be a thing, but there are of course will be some worry about fence sitters who enrich themselves by pandering to the left, ala Kerry and Clinton. Beto sounds a bit like Kerry, fairly charming, capable guy who marries into wealth. That said, Beto sounds articulate, authentic, and likable on a grand scale, and he might be a good messenger for what policy platform the democrats at large decide on; a lot of Bernie's policy was adopted during the Democratic Convention and Clinton played her part afterwards.
  22. Straw men. No one's arguing against the effect of twitter. But I don't think twitter alone will equal all the monied influence on the right which uses social media, and every kind of media to better effect.
  23. I think social media group think alone is less dangerous than the directed efforts of a few talkingheads with a wide audience who work at the direction of their corporate masters and who also have their own social media presence with some help from Russia.
  24. Who is the Coulter and Rush of the left? There's nothing like Fox News and Clear Channel pushing an ideology from the top down on the left. (MSNBC certainly panders to liberals, but I doubt that's a dictate of NBC ownership). There's simply not a concerted effort to create a purity test on the left. That people want to pull the party to the left is fine, and from my pov a good thing.
