  1. if you listen carefully, you can hear the sound of the universe in between pitches. not everyone listens carefully.
  2. b.a.'s write up in the prospect handbook on salcedo was interesting - apparently he had a velocity jump last spring and was hitting 96 but, and i'm sure they're speculating, his body hadn't caught up and he went down for the year.
  3. it was announced they were both in extended spring training getting stretched out. i'd guess they'll be up before may and bump rogers and jones to ft. myers.
  4. also missing is angel mata....
  5. i'd say gray has as good a shot as anyone to go no. 1 overall. if he does, appel would likely go to the cubs at no. 2 and then you have a huge decision by the rockies. if they do go prep bat, we'd have a shot at manaea at no.4. that would be an opportunity brought to us by scott boras.
  6. he'll stay in the pen so the guess is that he'll be fasttracked to ft. myers. my guess is that rogers and baxendale will join him in ft. myers as fellow 2012 draftees.
  7. vargas likely starts out in ft. myers. he spent an eternity in the rookie leagues so I don't see him repeating the mwl after a solid performance. dj hicks will likely be the 1b at crapids, perhaps splitting time with rory Rhodes. I think both are organizational guys and I just listed the guys I thought could be classed as prospects.
  8. i haven't seen a lot of needs analysis for the three teams picking ahead of us but that is half the equation for our pick at no.4. astros: wanted a college arm last year but luhnow is a bit of a wildcard. they've established a preference for up the middle players so frazier/meadows may be in play. all early indications are the best college arm not name mark appel. cubs: most pitching starved minor league system around almost certainly will go college arm without a standout prep to consider. appel makes a ton of sense for them. rockies: best case scenario for us landing manaea would be for the rockies to fall in love with one of the prep of'ers. they popped dahl last year and b.a. indicated they'd be the most likely team to go position player at the front of the draft, ostensibly b/c they have some decent young arms at the mlb level.
  9. any first hand reports you'd like to share with us?
  10. not necessarily. we had seven starters start 14 or more games at beloit last year. seven is right about the perfect number with all the vicissitudes of the minor league season. one of those guys might start out in extended spring training if there is a logjam and either wait for a promotion, an injury, or an implosion.
  11. One of the most prospect laden rosters I've seen in low-A. I'm assuming the converted college starters (melotakis and duffey) start out here, meaning we'd have prospects at the following: cf: buxton rf: walker lf: kepler 2b: polanco ss: goodrum 3b: harrison sp: berrios sp: bard sp: mata sp: melotakis sp: duffey sp: boyd sp: robb rp: lee rp: herr rp: powell rp: gallant rp: burris
  12. their schedule isn't the strongest but i'd put them ahead of the missouri valley competition that manaea will be up against - kansas, san diego st, fresno st, san francisco and new mexico are all solid teams on their schedule. didn't mean to violate the board policy by posting the bit from the article, but to summarize: shipley has been working at 93-95 and has a very good change-up. curve is developing and can be an out pitch at times. shipley is super athletic - played as a shortstop his freshman year - and repeats his delivery very well and fields his position exceptionally. last year was his first full year as a pitcher and he went 9-4, 2.20 with 88k in 98 ip. cousin of nfl wideout jordan shipley. right now his early returns are good so far this year, but not great. awful lot of potential for improvement. smells like a top ten pick. rated no. 31 preseason college prospect by baseball america - similar to what zimmer was prior to his junior year iirc.
  13. check out polanco swinging from the left and then from the right. looks like the bat might be knocked out of his hands swinging lefty but he swings like un hombre from the right.
  14. early runner for college guy bursting from the pack - a lot of uncanny similarities to kyle zimmer a year ago. thre 7ip 6h 1er 7k against a crappy holy cross team over the weekend. from baseball america: Balance of this post deleted -- it is a violation of Twins Daily rules to post an entire article. You may quote from an article and/or include a link to an article. Please see the sticky thread at the top of the main forum page for the statement of policy that covers this. glunn
  15. btw, the write up on thorpe was spectacular. he's grown nine inches in a couple of years including two since signing and he's been pitching against much older competition. i don't think it's unreasonable at all that he shows up in the gcl this year. sounds like someone worth watching.
  16. one of their signing was an 18 y.o. out of the dominican so i believe his bonus would be counted toward the 2011 amount, the year he was eligible to sign. the twins might have gone over the $2.9 million number but not actually hit the cap as i believe that number only applies to guys eligilble in 2012.
  17. possibly. but only if manaea regresses. appel is the wildcard and i think don't think stanek is as good as others do. i think one of whitson/overton/wahl will go in the top few picks as well. crawford would definitely be on my shortlist and you know the twins will be following hard this spring.
  18. i'm thinking manaea is the best player and the guy that stands out to the twins the most but i have a hard time seeing him get past the cubs, who are probably even more pitching starved then we are. there will be a second tier of pitchers that emerge - last year it was gausman and zimmer - and this year a couple of guys to keep an eye on are karsten whitson and dillon overton, along with jonathan crawford. if the twins can't justify a college arm, an up-the-midlle prep guy like jp crawford or the catcher from oklahoma could sway them.
  19. helluva goatee.
  20. of that group, the only one with a chance to be a number one, imo, is manaea. he's easily the first pick in the draft for me - he's physically a monster with a great arm and rapidly improving secondary stuff. we haven't seen his best yet. appel and stanek both have no. 2 upside.
  21. yep. this pick would probably be around pick number 60 in the old cba. b.a. came out with their top 50 prospects the other day. four is theoretically a tough spot to be in with three top college arms and the teams ahead of you needing impact arms but there are a few second tier pitchers who could emerge. my money is on dillon overton from oklahoma to make a push to be in the top five before it's over.
  22. liriano will carve up the national league, but even when he does, it doesn't mean we should've signed him. bringing him back would've led to more of the same, imo. i have a feeling he goes for 15 wins for the pirates this year, 3.3 e.r.a., 200ks and 70 bbs and helps lead them to a surprise playoff run. and then he falls apart in year two and doesn't finish the season in their rotation.
  23. anything to get the twins to use the tri-color hats is a huge win in my book. if we could just stop using the dairy queen blue jerseys, we'd have the best uniform combos since i've been a fan. best news of the offseason to me - just ahead of acquiring meyer and may.
  24. john manuel was asked this question in his b.a. twins chat about our system and i believe he said we're one of the most improved systems and that he'd guess we were somewhere in the 6-8 range. that was before the additions of meyer and may so we may be flirting with a top five ranking, especially considering that we're addressing our glaring weakness. Verve, what's your take on May, how much did his down year at double A damage his overall stock? love the pickup - he was one of the guys i was hoping they'd pry loose at the deadline. he's a pure power arm that misses bats but i think he's destined for the pen. when i'm playing gm in my downstairs basement, this is one of the moves i make. nice job by ryan, imo.
