  1. not true. eades doesn't miss as many bats as his stuff would indicate but he's a pretty classic power arm who has improved over the years at one of the best programs in the country. this is an upside pick.
  2. i believe draft rights last a year. he'd eventually become a free agent. which gets you to thinking....appel is probably worth a $6-7 million dollar bonus in the current draft structure but if he were to hit free agency, his value likely doubles. much of that would be for the rarity of the commodity - in very few places can a team spend whatever they want on young, major league-ready talent (cuba and japan come to mind) so he'd likely induce a frenzy.
  3. probably because the perceived discount wouldn't be enough to get another guy high on their board. the two-fer makes sense but there's no telling who is going to be there at 43. that said, if stewart is sticking to his guns re: a&M (which seems to be posturing right now), this might be my second favourite realistic option.
  4. pretty typical ace high school numbers - i'm guessing the competition was pretty fierce in that part of the world but it's hard to extrapolate anything from h.s. stats.
  5. the twins likely wouldn't go much over slot for appel and that would still represent a decrease of what he was likely offered by the 'stros and rejected last year. after going back to school to put himself in a higher leverage position, why would he sign for that? i think appel is going to break the draft in its current iteration. the 'stros aren't going to pick him when they could get at least equal value with gray and after that the only team that could likely lure him into signing would be the cubs. if they pass, i think it's hello st. paul saints for him - it could get very interesting.
  6. maybe he was battling an alcohol addiction.
  7. taveras has freakish hitting skills and is a lefty version of miggy cabrera who will provide above avg. defense at a corner of spot. he's at 3-a and only a year and a half older than buxton and as prospect evaluators point out, you heavily weight the upper minor experience at a relatively young age. with that as a benchmark, taveras' season last year at 2-a was special.
  8. berrios has given up 39 hits in 33.1 innings and has a whip of 1.35. he may get the call to ft. myers at some point this year due to being ahead of the pack when we start moving people but his numbers aren't screaming a promotion by any means.
  9. at worst, the twins would get the number five in next year's draft if he didn't sign. my question is, if he doesn't sign, do the twins still get their full bonus pool this year? if so, lawd knows we better be drafting for upside in the later rounds. not sure what happened with the pirates/appel sitch last year.
  10. dude - he's been closing for ft. myers and missing a ton of bats. i'm sure he's in line for a midseason promotion to new britain. perhaps the best pure arm strength in the system - he's hit triple digits.
  11. I can tell that you know your stuff but manaea was absolutely on scouts' radars before last year's cape. he's been inconsistent in the past and has flashed brilliance, but there aren't too many physical lefties that have the raw arm strength he does - he was on a lot of shortlists. that said, that was his only sustained period where he threw a three pitch mix with great effect and the results were awesome. still love the guy but I think he and stewart could be on pretty much the same time frame to the bigs and therefore i'm leaning stewart.
  12. actually, the only reason to consider doing this is because the twins have such a high pick. their pool is inflated because of that pick amount so if they could get a guy like McGuire to sign for mid-round money, they may have a couple million to throw around. it makes additional sense to consider this in a weak draft where there is no clear cut no. 4 player. I kind've like the idea but that's tempered with the thought that there is no guarantee as to who is going to be on the board in later rounds and that the twins may not actually spend their entire pool.
  13. i love shipley (it's braden, btw). i'm leery of spending a high first round pick on a guy without a breaking ball, though. he's probably no better than a number three starter without a useable third pitch, but if you think it has potential, he'd be right there with the group of players after gray and appel.
  14. i'd pick frazier over meadows but frazier has the floor of a one-tool player - despite his bat speed his hit tool isn't overly polished.
  15. the nagging injury has made him really hard to evaluate - in the early spring i was praying we'd have a shot at him and now that we likely will, i'm having a hard time pulling the trigger. when he's on, no one squares this guy up, unlike a guy like appel who throws hard, but straight as hell.
  16. re: which prep of'er goes first: scouts think highly of meadows but they fall in love with frazier. i'd guess he goes first as well.
  17. i'm still in love with manaea and would love for the twins to pick him but the scouting reports on stewart this spring have been glowing. keep in mind that manaea probably wouldn't be ready to contribute until 2015 and a fast-tracked prep arm would be ready right around the same time. for that reason, I've started to lean stewart.
  18. appel has a pretty good shot to end the season in the majors but i'd put him just behind that first group if he didn't. gray has created separation, imo. with that said, i'd have more difficulty deciding who's 1 and who's 2 between the two of them rather than whether they're the two best. man that was an awkward sentence.
  19. i'd put them 1-2 on the list right now for guys that will likely end their seasons in the minors. only correa and archie bradley give me pause at the moment - jonathan gray will also be in that mix after the draft.
  20. college ball is often compared to low-a ball in terms of talent. that's a pretty big blanket statement and there is clearly a big gap between the big 10 and pac 10 but most of the players in premium leagues will play pro ball at some level or another. so if you see a guy like jonathan gray struggle, you have to remember he's up against some pretty good line-ups.
  21. the early returns from last year's draft are awesome so i'm going to give deron Johnson and company a lot of room this time around.
  22. name five better players than him. manaea dominated over 57 innings this summer against the best amateur competition in the country. i think there is a good chance he's avaiable at four. my gut says 1) gray 2) appel 3) frazier and 4) manaea.
  23. lol. that might've come off wrong....
  24. people like to immediately talk about promotions after a hint of dominance but there will need to be some space made on the kernels roster as berrios, bard and mata come out of est and duffey would seem to be on a shortlist after tonight.
  25. ...nor was it the case with the twins in recent years.
